HENRY daNICaN of making students understand the benefi ts of reading and encouraging them to open their mind to the wonderful world of books, especially fi ction. But how? Time was when high school students should read a good number of books and accumulate suffi cient number of points to merit a good grade in their English classes. Then, students would rush to the library after every class hour and bring home books to read, summarize them and get their desired points. Most of the books available for reading were the masterpieces of the great masters of fi ction, specifi cally, the classics. They became very familiar with Ivanhoe. The Three Musketeers, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Les Miserables, The Count of Monte Cristo, etc. These books are simply wonderful, their stories are very interesting and they really fueled the students with more fi re to read some more. In the process, they learned so much about life, about the world, about love. And they realized they have improved themselves tremendously. Their command of the language was greatly improved and even inspired them to write. Not today, I think. Our students do not even care to read the broadsheets. If they want news and get them from print, they would go to tabloids because the news are fl eshy and captivating. But how does a teacher encourage her students to read, not just their textbooks but fi ction? I suggest, they fi rst should be introduced to the short story. Really short, they could be fi nished I one setting and what wonderful and beautiful stories they would be exposed to. Ask them to read, O. Henry’s The Third Ingredient, Guy de Mupassant’s The Necklace, Bret Harte’s The Luck of Roaring Camp, and other very interesting stories like Our Lady’s Juggler, and even Filipino short stories in English like The God Stealer by F. Sionil Jose, short stories of Bienvenido Santos, Celso Carunungan, as well as Jose Garcia Villa’s story of Dodong and Teang, etc. if reading these works of fi ction would not make the students appreciate reading, I wonder what would? I hope it is not the cheap paperbacks sold just about anywhere. Reading anyone? Get into the habit. Teachers, like me, let us encourage our students to read in our English classes and let them experience traveling around the world, dating beautiful women and getting into adventures in books, in reading. They will have a great time and remembrance of life in high school with books. ______By LaLLIE aMOROSO-JaRdINEL Zeferino Arroyo High School Iriga City july 15 - 21, 2012 news bikol reporter 7 to impose taxes on small-scale mining LEGAZPI CITY -– The Lanete said, is an over a billion- silver for a total gross production provincial government of Mas- peso a year industry. gain of P6.9 billion. bate is finding ways to collect “We are a province rich in In a steady state, the proj- taxes from the thousands of mineral, particularly gold and ect is forecast to produce some small-scale miners feasting for yet we are one of the poorest 200,000 ounces in average year- free on the rich mineral re- in the country in terms of local ly gold output over the first eight sources of the island province. economy.
