GOSPEL Mt 10:26-33

Jesus said to the Twelve: “Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.”

MARIAN SHRINE OF OUR LADY OF SCHOENSTATT

Renewal of the Covenant of Love with our Mother Thrice Admirable, Queen and Victress of Schoenstatt

Background Today we come together as the Schoenstatt Family of Austin to celebrate Covenant Mass. In this Mass we renew our Covenant of Love with Mary, united with our Schoenstatt Family from around the world and spiritually united in the Original Shrine with our Father and Founder, Fr. Joseph Kentenich.

When we renew the Covenant of Love, we renew that bond of love that we have with the Mother Thrice Admirable of Schoenstatt and remember the original event that happened on October 18, 1914, in a little chapel like this one between a group of students, their spiritual director, and the Blessed Mother.

Schoenstatt’s Covenant of Love with Mary has its theological foundation in the history of salvation. From the very beginning, this history of salvation is the history of God’s Covenant of Love with mankind. The Covenant culminates in the “new and eternal covenant” sealed by Jesus Christ through his life, death, and resurrection.

Over one hundred years after the first Covenant of Love took place in Schoenstatt, , we can look back and discover how Divine Providence has been present in our holy history, leading the life of our Schoenstatt Family. We give thanks for the Schoenstatt Family of Austin and for this daughter Shrine that has become a Place of Grace for all who make a pilgrimage here.

Reader 1: Let us begin our Covenant renewal by listening to an excerpt from Schoenstatt's Founding Document, in which our Father and Founder, Fr. Joseph Kentenich, challenges the young men of the founding generation to have heroic confidence in the Blessed Mother's care for them. Here we relive the moment of the original Covenant of Love, deeply united with the entire Schoenstatt Family around the world.

Reader 2: "When St. Peter saw the glory of God on Tabor, he called out with delight: It is good for us to be here! Let us build three tents here! (cf. Mt 17:4) These words come to mind again and again. And I have often asked myself: would it not be possible for our little sodality chapel to likewise become the Tabor on which the glory of Mary would be revealed? Undoubtedly, we could not accomplish a greater apostolic deed, nor leave our successors a more precious legacy, than to urge our Lady and Queen to erect her throne here in a special way, to distribute her treasures, and to work miracles of grace. ... This chapel will become for us the cradle of our sanctity, ... and this sanctity will apply gentle force on our heavenly Mother and draw her down to us.”

Reader 1: The Covenant of Love consists of the total gift of self to Mary. The Schoenstatt Marian consecration is a total and mutual exchange of hearts, goods, and interests where one grows in love, in one’s overall spiritual life, and in the ability to fulfill one’s mission. Mary leads us to a deeper love and commitment to Christ and the Triune God. Celebrant: Like all Marian consecrations, Schoenstatt’s Covenant of Love can be understood as the renewal of one’s baptismal covenant under the especially eff ective sign of Mary’s presence in the Church and in our lives. I invite you now to seal that Covenant of Love anew as we renew our baptismal covenant and our commitment to live a Christian life.

Do you believe in God the Father, rich in mercy; in God the Son, our Redeemer and Lord; in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the Church?

All: Yes, we believe.

Celebrant: The Church tells us that Mary, the great educator, teaches us to have faith. This reality led the Schoenstatt family to seal a Covenant of Love with her and ask her to keep us faithful to our baptismal commitment. The history of Schoenstatt proves that Mary accepted the Covenant sealed in the original Shrine on October 18, 1914. I ask you: based on this faith, are you willing to renew that Covenant with the Mother and Queen of Schoenstatt?

All: Yes, we are willing.

Celebrant: Do you want to be firmly rooted day by day in Schoenstatt's three sources of life: in Mary, our Mother and Educator, in the Shrine, our Cradle of Sanctity, and in Fr. Kentenich, our Father and Founder, so that the power of this threefold love will bear fruit in your mission?

All: Yes, we do.

Celebrant: Are you aware that, when we seal the Covenant of Love, we are responsible for each of our sisters and brothers and form a united family?

All: Yes, we are aware and accept this responsibility.

Celebrant: From the Shrine, Fr. Kentenich calls us to commit ourselves to Schoenstatt's mission: “As a chosen work and instrument in the hands of Mary, we wish to work totally and untiringly for the Marian transformation of the world in Christ.” By the grace flowing from the Shrine, do you commit yourselves to make an eff ort to live in the spirit of everyday sanctity and, with love, make contributions to the capital of grace in order to accomplish this mission?

All: Yes, we are committed to our mission.

Celebrant: Our commitment fills us with joy as we renew our Covenant of Love together: My Queen, my Mother, I give myself entirely to you, and to show my devotion to you, I consecrate to you this day: my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart, my entire self without reserve. As I am your own, my good Mother, Guard me and defend me as your property and possession. Amen.
