This notebook contains Salt's notes from "A lecture in reference to a portion of the Northwest" in 1872, which notes observances of Ojibway traditional beliefs and ceremonies, such as uses of tobacco, the pipe ceremony and sweat lodge ceremony. It also contains notes from Jesuit missionary accounts regarding wars between Ojibwe (Anishinaabe, also sometimes written Ojibway), Haudenosaunee and Huron and resulting Textual MG29-D53 1 11 C-15709 Notebook settlements along Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, the Bay of Quinte, and the Grand River. It also contains: notes on 1872-1901 the history of the Huron nation as told by Francis Parkman; a story about Papekoondebamene (Island of Skulls) on told by John Monague; a Nanabozho (Nanabush) story told by Lewis Okemawenene of Parry Island (Wasauksing First Nation); and a recipe given by John Monague (likely of Beausoleil First Nation) for a linament, which was written down in Parry Island in 1901.
