And it’s an island with a big heart - an island that gives its visitors a genuine welcome and treats them as friends. With its spectacular scenery and enviable climate, it’s no wonder that Aphrodite chose the island as her playground, and since then, mere mortals have been discovering this ‘land fit for Gods’ for themselves. Cyprus is an island of beauty and a country of contrasts. Cool, pine-clad mountains are a complete scene-change after golden sun- kissed beaches; tranquil, timeless villages are in striking contrast to modern cosmopolitan towns; luxurious beachside hotels can be exchanged for large areas of natural, unspoilt countryside; yet in Cyprus all distances are easily manageable, mostly on modern roads and highways - with a secondary route or two for the more adventurous. Most important of all, the island offers peace of mind. At a time when holidays Cyprus are clouded by safety consciousness, a feeling of security prevails everywhere since the crime level is so low as to be practically non-existent. 1 1 ew countries can trace the course of their history over 10.000 years, but F in approximately 8.000 B.C. the island of Cyprus was already inhabited and going through its Neolithic Age. The Water Development Department (WDD) is therefore investigating innovative methods for producing and conserving water. One of the concepts being considered is reduction of evaporation from surface water bodies. A reservoir operation study of the Southern Conveyor Project (SCP) suggests that an average of 6.9 million cubic meters (MCM) of water is lost to evaporation each year. The value of this water is over CYE 1.2 million, and replacement of this volume of water by desalination will cost CYE 2.9 million. The WDD has investigated the use of monomolecular films for use in evaporation suppression, but these films are difficult to use in the field and raise concerns about health effects.

This is not uncommon to Cyprus, as they frequently experience three to four year droughts every decade. They are currently in the middle of their fourth year of drought. Some Cypriots believe that the main reason for water shortages is due only to low levels of rainfall (average rainfall in Cyprus is 500 mm per year, and less than 400 mm per year is considered a drought year).

Cyprus 2020 Human Rights Report
CYPRUS 2020 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT Since 1974 the southern part of Cyprus has been under the control of the government of the Republic of Cyprus. The northern part of Cyprus, administered by Turkish Cypriots, proclaimed itself the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” in 1983. The United States does not recognize the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,” nor does any country other than Turkey. A substantial number of Turkish troops remain on the island. A buffer zone, or “Green Line,” patrolled by the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, separates the two sides. This report is divided into two parts: the Republic of Cyprus, and the area administered by Turkish Cypriots. REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Republic of Cyprus is a constitutional republic and multiparty presidential democracy. In 2018 voters re-elected President Nicos Anastasiades in free and fair elections. In 2016 voters elected 56 representatives to the 80-seat House of Representatives (Vouli Antiprosopon) in free and fair elections. The remaining seats are designated for Turkish Cypriots and are left vacant. Police enforce the law and combat criminal activity. Police report to the Ministry of Justice and Public Order. The president appoints the chief of police. Civilian authorities maintained effective control over the security forces. Members of the security forces committed some abuses. Significant human rights issues included: serious acts of corruption; crimes involving violence or threats of violence targeting members of national and ethnic minorities; and lack of investigation of and accountability for violence against women. The government took steps to identify, investigate, prosecute, and punish officials who committed human rights abuses.
