Eastern Michigan University vii ABSTRACT Background: Eastern Michigan University (EMU) is a regional comprehensive university established as a teacher training school in 1849. This case study analyzed the politics of change and persistence as the organization evolved from a normal schools that trained teachers to a regional comprehensive university. Purpose: This study was pursued to inform higher education leadership; satisfy the personal interests of the researcher and to contribute knowledge to comprehensive university organizational studies. Research Design: An interpretive longitudal historical case study design was pursed for this research. This case study reviewed the political cultural environment that occurred prior to the organization’s formation and through its transition to a multi- purpose university. The study describes the cultural environment, the Michigan Higher Education System and the organization as they evolved over time. Data Collection and Analysis: data were collected from non-obtrusive sources including: EMU archives, historical publications, Ypsilanti Historical Society, newspapers, catalogues, and brochures. As data was collected, categories were identified based on the presence of critical historical events. The categories included; demographics, economics, conflict and governance. Each of the categories was examined at national, state and local environmental levels. The data was organized into socially constructed eras that included three historical eras that occurred prior to the formation of the organization and six organizational eras that included the years 1850 – 1980. Findings: The study explains that the organization had three organizing biases that have persisted over time and that each bias becomes dominant when their respective referential cultural level of the environment is dominant. The governance of the organization changed in accordance with the dominant environmental level. The three organizing biases are; disciplines, semi-professional (methods) and local interests. Implications: The study illustrates the importance of understanding the competing values of an educational organization and how those values relate to a changing cultural environment. The study informs decision making and strategic approaches to higher education leadership. The study contributes to the literature regarding regional comprehensive universities and provides a general overview of the evolution of Michigan’s higher education system in relation to governance and cultural events. Finney began a career in ministry that was to have far- reaching implications for the religious as well as the civil life of the people of the United States. In July of that year he was ordained by the Presbytery of St. Lawrence, and assigned as a missionary to the little towns of Evans Mills and Antwerp in Jefferson County, New York. Moving in 1817 from Madison County, Kentucky, to Thrall's Prairie in western Boone County, Missouri, Harris became a prominent merchant and agriculturalist. Harris experimented in agriculture and continually enlarged, improved and developed his farm. In 1873 the St. Louis Agricultural and Mechanical Association awarded Harris's farm the title of "Model Farm of Missouri." Harris also engaged in the mercantile business in Columbia, Rocheport and Middle Grove. He won election as Boone Coun­ ty's representative to the Missouri legislature in 1860 and 1864. Harris also served on the University of Missouri's board of curators. George Caleb Bingham, a friend of Harris, completed this portrait in 1837. Mrs. William Jackson Hendrick, a daughter of Harris, presented the portrait to the State Historical Society in 1923. The Harris portrait, along with fourteen other portraits, one landscape, two genre paintings, four engravings, two litho­ graphs and numerous sketches presently are being displayed in the Society's Art Gallery. This exhibit commemorates the 100th anniversary of Bingham's death. The State Historical Society Art Gallery is open to the public 8:00 A.M.-4:30 P.M., Monday-Friday, excepting legal holi­ days. Ill* H INTRODUCTION The Michigan Historical Collections are a special library of The University of Michigan, con- taining the archives of the University and papers of individuals and organizations throughout Michi- gan. In the beginning there were two different projects. One, begun by Professor Lewis G. Vander Velde in 1934, was a program of collecting manuscript and printed materials relating to Michigan history, primarily for the use of graduate students in his seminar. The other program concerned the collecting and preservation of records of the University. To accomplish this purpose, President Alexander G. Ruthven appointed The Committee on University Archives, of which Professor Vander Velde was the secretary. Firmly convinced that a comprehen- sive collection of manuscripts dealing with the history of the University and the State would be use- ful for students and scholars, he began a vigorous campaign of letter writing and personal visits. Housed for a time in a room in the Clements Library, in 1938, needing more space, the papers were moved into the newly opened Rackham Building. In the same year the Regents established the Michigan Historical Collections and appointed Professor Vander Velde the Director.

    The Annals of Volume 76 Number 2 Iowa Spring 2017 A QUARTERLY JOURNAL OF HISTORY In This Issue ANDERS BO RASMUSSEN, assistant professor of American Studies at the University of Southern Denmark, investigates the actions of Civil War quartermaster Ferdinand Winslow. Using circumstantial evidence from a military “court of inquiry,” supplemented by evidence from Winslow’s career before and after the Civil War, Rasmussen concludes that despite Winslow’s commanding officer’s policies and his own antislavery prin- ciples, he appears to have profited from his position at the expense of the African Americans under the Union army’s care and perhaps at the risk of soldiers’ lives. EDWARD A. GOEDEKEN, Collections Coordinator and Professor of Library and Information Science at the Iowa State University Library, re- counts the efforts of Benjamin Gue, Peter Melendy, and Adonijah Welch after the Civil War to shape the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm into a functioning educational institution. Since Iowa was the first state to agree to the conditions of the Morrill Land-Grant Act in 1862, it is appro- priate that Goedeken sets his story in the context of debates at that time over what a land-grant college should be. Thirst for Knowledge: Historic Context for the 1872 Neosho Colored School The first national superintendent of schools for the Freedmen’s Bureau, northerner John W. Alvord, began his tenure with the Bureau in late 1865 with a personal tour of the former confederate states. His first report for the Bureau, written in January of 1866, commenced with the following notes. “The desire of the freedmen for knowledge cannot be overstated.” He included a list of reasons for that enthusiasm, the first of which was “the natural thirst for knowledge common to man.”1 1 John W. Four Men with a Vision: The oundinF g Fathers of the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm and Cornell University Abstract When a casual visitor strolls today across the sprawling campuses of the universities of Iowa State and Cornell, they may find it ah rd to believe that 150 years ago Iowa State consisted of a small handful of buildings and Cornell did not exist at all. That two such remarkable and well-known schools of higher learning even exist at all represents a story both stirring and complex that developed over the course of the early nineteenth century cumulating in the passage of the 1862 Morrill Land Grant Act.
