It was 1976 when just a few parishes came together for a small dance festival, and now, 40 years later, we are surrounded by thousands of young people and their families who have made this ministry a pillar of our Metropolis and Archdiocese. This weekend is not just about dancing and singing, it is about coming together as an Orthodox Christian family to Celebrate 40, but also to look ahead to the next 40 years and beyond and create even more impactful ways to spread our faith and heritage through this vibrant ministry. We are grateful for the vision of His Eminence Metropolitan Anthony, of blessed memory, the Preovolos family, and the many board members and volunteers who sacrificed so much in those early days to create a forum to gather our youth together, so that this 40th Anniversary celebration could be possible. It is also our distinct honor and privilege to be joined this weekend by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Geron of America, who has been a frequent guest to FDF for many years. The presence of His Eminence and his enthusiastic support of this ministry has further elevated the importance of this gathering and what it means to our future. I know that you all join me in expressing our deep esteem and love to our beloved Archbishop, and our congratulations as he receives this year’s Metropolitan Anthony Humanitarian Award. The Lord has blessed FDF with abundance, and we pray the He may continue to guide this ministry so that future generations may remain filled with joy, love and zeal for our Orthodox faith and Hellenic heritage! With Love in Christ, Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco “Celebrate 40!” FR. GARY KYRIACOU | CHAIRMAN, BOARD OF TRUSTEES FORTY YEARS AGO you could fill your gas tank for 59 cents per gallon, a house was about $43,000 and to take a selfie you needed a Polaroid camera and some pretty good flexibility. Microsoft was only a year old and wireless communication was a distant dream. To contact friends and family, you had to call them on a landline with a cord that tethered the telephone (and you) to the wall or mail them a letter, in an envelope, with an address written on the front and a stamp that cost 13 cents. Forty years ago a group of committed Greeks gathered to celebrate our culture’s art of folk dance. The Junior Parish Council of St. Spyridon’s Greek Orthodox Church in San Diego, with the blessing of His Grace Bishop Meletios (of blessed memory), the love of Fr. Phillips, and the supervision of Peter Preovolos, brought The Greek Orthodox Folk Dance and Choral Festival to life. The world we knew was forever changed. Under the leadership of Metropolitan Anthony (of blessed memory) and Mr. Peter Preovolos (along with the love and support of his family) participation and enthusiasm for FDF grew and it became the largest youth ministry event in the Metropolis of San Francisco. Founders were joined by industrious volunteers and spiritual supporters who shared a vision for celebrating our faith and heritage in this unique and exciting way. One sentence of the mission statement they developed stands out to me as a particular reason FDF has been championed and cherished by so many: “THAT THE NATURE OF THIS ANNUAL EVENT IS FOR THE SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE PURPOSE OF BRINGING OUR YOUTH (AND YOUNG ADULTS) TOGETHER IN A SPIRIT OF CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP AND LOVE." Nothing lasts 40 years by accident. Each time we have gathered over the past four decades we have experienced a level of sharing and connection that is transcendent. The core values of FDF remain the same today as they were in the beginning and we continue to enjoy this wonderful opportunity to share our proud Greek heritage and our magnificent Orthodox Faith. Singing and dancing are two of the greatest, most fundamental expressions of our humanity; so great that they also connect us to our divinity. As Orthodox Christians, we have made a commitment to let God into our hearts. When so many of us join together to express ourselves through dance and song, we glorify God within and without. Each year we gather in the spirit of friendly competition; but at a deeper level we are sharing our faith, our culture, and our humanity. How many times has this simple yet profound story been repeated in our Metropolis: Boy meets girl at FDF, they marry, have children and those children follow in their parent’s footsteps to dance, sing and celebrate at FDF? Only one of the many reasons I say the world we knew has been forever changed by this ministry. We thank the Founders of this amazing ministry! Thank you to Peter Preovolos, his family, and the young men and women that developed the program. I’m very grateful for the wonderful memories of our Metropolitan Anthony (of blessed memory) at FDF. We give thanks for your vision to celebrate our faith and heritage, by establishing a new and emotionally exceptional custom. To His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos, to the current Board of Trustees, to Michael Syrengelas, Spiro Beckas, Voula Contos, Manoli Rodarakis, and the entire Management Team thank you for carrying the torch of FDF for the participants of this amazing ministry. It is with selfless devotion that you pour your hearts and souls into this weekend. Thank you for your continued love and support! th To the dancers, directors, parents and all participants at this year’s 40 Anniversary Celebration, thank you for being here! Welcome back to those who are returning, and a warm welcome to those who are new. Enjoy this weekend with the contagious vigor and energy we experience year after year. Allow yourselves to give Glory to God through the expression of song and dance. Reach across the aisle, extend yourselves beyond the stage and let music and movement enter your souls. Strengthen relationships with those you know, make new friends and help lay the foundation for the next 40 years. We give thanks for the 40 years of FDF that have passed and pray for the success and sharing of the 40 more ahead. May this tradition continue to unite and inspire us as people of faith as we enjoy the largest gathering of Greek Orthodox faithful anywhere in the world.

Box 60228, 153 10 Ag. Paraskevi, Athens, Greece 2University of Athens, Department of Geology & Geoenvironment, Section of Economic Geology & Geochemistry, 15724, Panepistimiopolis, Athens, Greece Abstract BACKGROUND: The aim of this work is to define the chemical and mineralogical composition of the fuel gas desulphurization (FGD) gypsum produced from the Meliti thermal power plant in the region of Florina in North West Greece, in order to investigate potential uses in the cement industry. Mineralogical and microprobe analyses were carried out on FGD gypsum samples collected from the Meliti 330 MW lignite-fired power plant. RESULTS: Results show that the main component of the FGD gypsum is pure mineral gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O). The particle size of the gypsum ranges from 5 to 50 µm and the crystals are mainly of rhomboid shape. Microprobe analysis shows that the concentration of CaO and SO3, which are the main components, range from 31.9%–32.5% and from 45.90–46.40%, respectively. CONCLUSION: This FGD gypsum can easily substitute the natural gypsum used in the production of cement. 2007 Society of Chemical Industry Keywords: petrography; SEM; FGD gypsum; X-ray diffraction INTRODUCTION fly ash, for mine reclamation, to fill in openings that In 2001 the European Commission introduced the are left following the completion of mining activities.

However, a key part of the National Energy and Climate Plan is to gradually phase out the use of lignite, which includes the decommissioning of all existing lignite units by 2023, except the Ptolemaida V unit, which will be closed by 2028. This plan makes Greece a frontrunner among countries who intensively use lignite in energy production. In this context, this paper investigates the environmental, economic, and social state of Megalopolis and the related perspectives with regard to the energy transition, through the elaboration of a SWOT analysis, highlighting the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the municipality of Megalopolis and the regional unit of Arcadia.

  • Dead Heroes and Living Saints: Orthodoxy
Dead Heroes and Living Saints: Orthodoxy, Nationalism, and Militarism in Contemporary Russia and Cyprus By Victoria Fomina Submitted to Central European University Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervisors: Professor Vlad Naumescu Professor Dorit Geva CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2019 Budapest, Hungary Statement I hereby declare that this dissertation contains no materials accepted for any other degrees in any other institutions and no materials previously written and / or published by any other person, except where appropriate acknowledgement is made in the form of bibliographical reference. Victoria Fomina Budapest, August 16, 2019 CEU eTD Collection i Abstract This dissertation explores commemorative practices in contemporary Russia and Cyprus focusing on the role heroic and martyrical images play in the recent surge of nationalist movements in Orthodox countries. It follows two cases of collective mobilization around martyr figures – the cult of the Russian soldier Evgenii Rodionov beheaded in Chechen captivity in 1996, and two Greek Cypriot protesters, Anastasios Isaak and Solomos Solomou, killed as a result of clashes between Greek and Turkish Cypriot protesters during a 1996 anti- occupation rally. Two decades after the tragic incidents, memorial events organized for Rodionov and Isaak and Solomou continue to attract thousands of people and only seem to grow in scale, turning their cults into a platform for the production and dissemination of competing visions of morality and social order. This dissertation shows how martyr figures are mobilized in Russia and Cyprus to articulate a conservative moral project built around nationalism, militarized patriotism, and Orthodox spirituality.

  • TOMASZ FRASZCZYK Greeklish – on the Influence of New
TOMASZ FRASZCZYK Greeklish – on the Influence of New Communication Technologies and New Media on the Development of Contemporary Greek KEY WORDS Greeklish, Greece, language, writing, media ABSTRACT The growing importance of English in the Western cultural circle is also an issue in the countries of the Mediterranean Sea. Research in the region shows that with the increasing popularity of electronic communication, especially with the use of SMS, the development of new media and the market offensive of social media like Facebook and Twitter, Greek is influenced not only by English, but also by Latinization, a process which has been termed Greeklish. The article presents a short history of Greek, as an introduction to its current development in the context of Greeklish. Its characteristics and origins in Greek writing are illustrated with the most representative examples from press, television and internet sites, along with typologies. The research outcome of documenting different aspects of using Greeklish have been discussed, as well as the most important issues in discussions taking place in Greece on possible consequences of this phenomenon on the development of Greek. The growing importance of English in countries of the Western culture is a phenomenon, which has also influenced the region of the Mediterranean Sea, among it Greece and Cyprus. The Anglicisation of the Greek language, but also of Polish, takes place by including English words in common, everyday use (e.g. weekend, lunch), structural borrowings1 or giving proper names in English (e.g. “Sea Towers” in Gdynia or “Wiśniowy Business Park” in Warsaw), and is only a certain element of the transformation process of contemporary Greek.

  • The Struggle of Hellenism Over Macedonia
THE STRUGGLE OF HELLENISM OVER MACEDONIA A SURVEY OF RECENT BIBLIOGRAPHY The rise of nationalities, European power politics and the impending dissolution of the Ottoman empire had converted the Balkans at the end of last and the beginning of this century into a field of fierce national antagonism. Events, especially in that vast area of the peninsula, geogra phically from very remote times known by the name of Macedonia, had gone far beyond the Turkish state’s boundaries and had become matters of international concern. "The Macedonian Question” drew at one time the attention of public opinion all over Europe and, up to this moment, presents a most interesting subject to the scholar of Balkan history. From the Greek side, the Macedonian Question has been nothing but the compulsory struggle of Hellenism to keep its position against Bulgarian infiltration strongly agitated by foreign power politics; the outcome of the struggle is primarily due to the overwhelmingly in all respects superiority of the Greek element in the disputed area, its vitality and will for resistance. The assistance given by the Kingdom of Greece at the last stage of the fight (1904- 1908) would have otherwise been fruitless. An effort to study this subject from a more general scope has re cently been undertaken under the auspices of the Institute f or Balkan Studies of the Society for Macedonian Studies in Thessalonike. The effort includes the collection of all published or unpublished material, of manuscripts, handwritten notes, letters, photographs, newspapers of that time, official consular reports, Turkish documents etc. and their examination by a special staff.

  • Kiosk Wars/CD Review
December 1, 2010 Hi John- Here are the CD reviews for the Januaary 2011 issue. I'll be by your office later today to give you the CD covers for scanning. Sending file as back up. Talk soon, Perri Kiosk Wars: The Big Guns Battle for Minimarket Shelf Space Perri Pagonis [email protected] The music industry has gone through such dramatic changes in the past twenty years, that it’s hard to keep track of what’s happening with the record companies at any given moment. Vinyl records, although widely accepted by audiophiles as the most satisfying way to hear recorded music, is for collectors and DJs only. CDs are still the storage medium being most widely manufactured and distributed, however, they are becoming more technologically passé on a daily basis. Downloading digital music off of the Internet in MP3 and other forms is the current youth rage, but kids seem to download scads of stuff on a whim, often times an artist’s entire oeuvre in one fell swoop, and then forget to listen to it. The MySpace phenomenon on the web has made any band’s music, I mean any band’s music, from Micronesian punk rock goofball stuff to selected arias from monumental Italian opera stars, available to download into your computer’s hard disk in seconds. As the age of global stadium stars has dwindled down to a mere handful of selected acts: Rolling Stones, Madonna, U2, AC/DC, Metallica etc, so too has the Greek music scene splintered into a few revered giants and hordes of mewling newbies.
