The genus comprises approximately 250 species distributed throughout the tropical regions mainly in Africa and Asia. With increasing chemical and pharma- cological investigations, Combretum has shown its potential as a source of various secondary metabolites. Combretum ex- tracts or isolates have shown in vitro bioactivitities such as antibacterial, antifungal, antihyperglycemic, cytotoxicity against various human tumor cell lines, anti-inflammatory, anti-snake, antimalarial and antioxidant effects. In vivo studies through various animal models have also shown promising results. However, chemical constituents and bioactivities of most species of this highly diversified genus have not been investigated. The molecular mechanism of bioactivities of Combretum isolates remains elusive. This review focuses on the chemistry of 261 compounds isolated and identified from 31 species of Combretum. The phytochemicals of interest are non-essential oil compounds belonging to the various struc- tural groups such as terpenoids, flavonoids, phenanthrenes and stilbenoids. Br. is an angiosperm family of high economic value. However, there is dearth of information on the phylogenetic relationship of the members of this family using ribulose biphosphate carboxylase (rbcL) gene. Previous studies with electrophoretic-based and morphological markers revealed that this family is phylogenetically complex. In the present study, 79 sequences of rbcL were used to study the phylogenetic relationship among the members of Combretaceae of African origin with a view to provide more information required for the utilization and management of this family. Multiple Sequence alignment was executed using the MUSCLE component of Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Version X Analysis (MEGA X). Transition/Transversion ratio, Consistency index, Retention Index and Composite Index were also determined. Phylogenetic trees were constructed using Maximum parsimony (MP) and Neighbor joining methods.

One hundred and eighty individuals were interviewed from the selected villages. Three villages were located in the depleted woodlands and the remaining three at abundant woodlands. Traditional governance structures within the selected villages and relevant conservation department officials were also interviewed. Colophospermum mopane is an essential source of fuelwood and provide poles used for construction of traditional structures. Each family uses 6.8 ± 0.1 kg of Colophospermum mopane fuelwood for cooking day-1 in the woodland depleted villages, while 8.2 ± 0.2 kg is used at the woodland abundant villages. Colophospermum mopane is preferred for construction of traditional structures because its wood is durable and is able to resists the effects of termites and wood borers.     RESEARCH Elephants and riparian woodland changes in the Linyanti region, northern Botswana Gabriella Teren*, Norman Owen-Smith Centre for African Ecology, School of Animal, Plant and Environmental Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Private Bag 3, WITS 2050, South Africa; email: [email protected]; Norman.Owen- [email protected] *Corresponding author Abstract The decline of woodlands as a result of elephant disturbance is of much concern for biodiversity conservation in Africa. Northern Botswana supports the largest elephant (Loxodonta africana) population and highest local density levels near rivers during the dry season. We describe changes in structure and composition that have occurred in the riparian woodland flanking the Linyanti River, from unpublished reports, theses and our recent observations. There has been a progressive reduction in representation of the two most common Acacia spp. as a result of mortality to canopy trees, largely from felling and bark removal by elephants. However, both arboreal species show little regeneration, apart from localized seedlings. Other canopy tree species are less susceptible to damage, but also show a lack of saplings. A dense shrub understorey has developed since 1992, dominated by Combretum mossambicense, a species not utilized by elephants although browsed by ruminants. The patchy woodland decline and advancing shrubbery, plus contrasting recruitment patterns of canopy trees versus shrubs, suggest that factors besides elephants—such as climate—might also be involved in woodland change. The study we have initiated will interpret the potential consequences of these changes for woodland biodiversity, building on the spatio-temporal record provided by aerial photography. Sexually transmitted infections were frequently managed using the following plants: Terminalia sericea, Strychnos cocculoides, Ximenia caffra, Cassia abbreviata, Cassia occidentalis, Combretum hereroense, Combretum imberbe, Dichrostachys cinerea, Boscia albitrunca, Momordica balsamina and Pel- tophorum africanum.

    CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1 Phytosociological syntheses 2.1.1 Introduction A phytosociological synthesis can be described as a study of which the main aim is to compile a synthesis of vegetation information based on phytosociological data collected by various researchers at various times in a particular study area. Large vegetation data sets are generally encountered with in phytosociological syntheses, due to the accumulation of information in the form of vegetation releves. Knowledge on phytosociological syntheses and the treatment of large vegetation data sets are limited in southern Africa. Identification of basic vegetation units still needs attention, lowering general concern of syntheses and vegetation classification on higher ranks. 2.1.2 Previous attempts to treat large vegetation data sets One of the first attempts to analise large phytosociological data sets in South Africa, was the three-step method proposed by Bredenkamp and Bezuidenhout (1995). Winterbach (1998) also performed this method in a synthesis of Acacia-dominated vegetation of the Central Bushveld of South Africa. The three-step method for a phytosociological synthesis of grasslands in South Africa (Bredenkamp & Bezuidenhout 1995) was based on the two-step procedure proposed by Van der Maarel et al. (1987). a) Van der Maarel et aL (1987) The first step of the method of Van der Maarel et al. (1987) is preceded by stratification of the data set. Stratification is suggested either by area (in the case of a large and geographically heterogeneous region), or by vegetation type in the case where all plant communities of an area are covered. Cluster analysis is performed on each stratified unit, resulting in basic clusters (first step).
