Benson Park, Hudson, NH – On the site of the former Benson’s Wild Animal Farm. The zoo and amusement park opened to the public in 1926. The park changed hands and names a few times and eventually closed in 1987. The town bought the park and re-opened it in 2010 as a recreational park. Various structures still remain from its previous life as a zoo, including a gorilla cage that held a 500-pound silverback named Colossus, the Elephant Barn, an eating pavilion, a building shaped like a giant shoe from a fairy-tale-themed area, and more. The buildings and sections of the park are labelled with short histories and pictures, and the ticket booth has been turned into an information kiosk. Local people have adopted areas of the park and have created gardens, which should be blooming during the time of our Regional. Short hiking trails wander through a quickly changing landscape of marsh, field, and forest originally landscaped to hold a variety of transplanted species. Multiple ponds dot the park as well, and it features a large children’s playground and a 9/11 memorial that incorporates a beam from the destroyed World Trade Center. There are also markers showing a timeline of the events of that fateful day. The pathway through the memorial is shaped to replicate the flight path of Flight 175. Print a copy of the Map before visiting. The 9/11 Memorial is just a short walk from the parking lot and is worth a visit.
