During the year thirty-seven new members have joined the Society, but we have lost a considerable number owing to removals from the neighbourhood, while seven deaths have regretfully to be recorded. I would like to remind our members how greatly the late Sir Edgar Wigram contributed to the resuscitation of our Society after its struggle for existence during the Great War. He aroused a new interest in our work, sparing no effort to that end. Those of us who were present at any of the fourteen lectures he delivered to the Society cannot fail to recall them with much pleasure, while we are fortunate in having five articles by him preserved in our Transactions. Our membership is now 296, a number which we would gladly see increased. In pursuance of our plan for marking historic sites in the city, we have placed on the wall of " Woollams " a tablet recording that nearby, until it was demolished in 1837, stood Holywell House, the favourite home of John and Sarah Churchill, Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, from 1684 to 1722. At St. Michael's Church, St. Albans, extensive restorations and repairs have become necessary and have been skilfully carried out under the direction of Mr. J. C. Rogers, one of our members. The Council, on behalf of the Society, has gladly made a contribu- tion towards the cost of this work, which has entailed heavy expenditure and has saddled the church with a considerable debt. The Vicar, the Rev. B. E. F. Mitchell, will be very grateful for any contributions that our members may be willing to send him. The following lectures have been delivered to the Society :— Jan. 29th, 1935.—" The Roman Theatre at Verulamium," by Miss Kathleen M. Kenyon, M.A. Feb. 12.th, 1935.—" Morocco," by Capt. F. H. Mellor, F.R.G.S. Feb. 26th, 1935.—" Lone Islands of the Pacific," by Capt. W. E. Greenland, F.R.G.S. Mar. 12th, 1935.—" Maiden Castle, Dorset," by Mrs. R. E. Mortimer Wheeler, F.S.A. Mar. 26th, 1935.—" Ships Throughout the Ages," by Mr. Edgar J. March. Oct. 3rd, 1935.—" How the Housing Problem is Solved on the Continent," by Mr. F. R. Yerbury, Hon. A.R.I.B.A. (This lecture was arranged in conjunction with the Hertfordshire Chapter of Architects.) Oct. 14th, 1935.—" Constantinople," by Capt. F. H. Mellor, F.R.G.S. Oct. 28th, 1935.—" James Bucknall, 3rd Viscount Grimston : 1747-1808," by the Countess of Verulam. The following excursions were very ably arranged and con- ducted by Mrs. Harold Hartley, to whom we tender sincere thanks :— May 18th, 1935.—The British Museum (with lecture on Medieval Art by Mr. Cecil Hallet, B.A., F.S.A.). June 4th, 1935.—Sulgrave Church and Sulgrave Manor. June 18th, 1935.—Cottered Church, Ardeley Church and Ardeley Bury. July 3rd, 1935.—Stoke Poges. July 13th, 1935.—Doughty House, Richmond. GEO.
