With the beautiful backdrop of Western Europe’s highest peak, , the popular resort of Chamonix is known as the Alpine capital of mountaineering and is a magnet for adventure sports fans from all round the world. This historic town borders Italy and Switzerland and benefits from easy motorway access to Geneva International airport, an hour away.

There is an abundance of off-piste skiing and ski touring options for the expert skiers plus plenty of family-friendly pistes that cater to all abilities. Chamonix is one of the rare mountain resorts that is open all year round. It is home to a diverse international population, attracted by the excellent schools, easy-going lifestyle, one of the best golf courses in the Alps, Michelin starred chefs and the QC Terme Spa. Not forgetting the unlimited outdoor activities including mountain & road biking, climbing, trail running, cross country skiing, trekking, yoga and paragliding.

Emmanuel Renaut, the Michelin star chef from Megève, has recently acquired the Auberge du Bois Prin in Moussoux which will be a great addition to Chamonix. Another welcome addition is the new ski lift at Flégère that provides rapid access to some sunny pistes & is walking distance from the popular residential areas of Les Praz & Les Bois.

Internationally known as the ultimate luxury ski destination, Courchevel breathes glamour, style, excellence and the highest standards of both service and skiing.

Set within the famed Three Valleys, ensuring 600 km of pistes catering to all levels, you would be struggling to find a more varied skiing experience. With 23% of the famous slopes classed as green, and three ski schools, Courchevel isn’t just for the seasoned skier. There may be a generous portion of green slopes but the thrill-seekers don’t miss out; 32% of the pistes are classed as red, and 10% as black, so there are a lot of options for the experienced skier. The legendary Jean Blanc slope which runs from the top of La Loze to Le Praz is a favourite of the local Savills team.

Combined with the extensive range of accommodation, entertainment, luxury shopping and restaurants, Courchevel champions the slopes and style this 74th Season.

Without doubt a trip to Courchevel is not complete without visiting La Croisette in the heart of the resort where a range of boutiques will surely delight. And to breathe in the mountain air, head to the top of La Saulire for an incredible 360 degree vista of the Three Valleys and views of Mont Blanc.

It is said that Méribel takes its name from the Latin ‘mirare bellum’ meaning ‘the point from where the view is beautiful’ and as proud advocates of Méribel, the community here and the lifestyle, we couldn’t agree more. If you are looking to maximise the views, try the slopes of Georges Mauduit and Roc de Fer, they won’t disappoint.

Set in the very heart of the Three Valleys, Méribel boasts an enviable central location ensuring there are enough slopes for even the most adventurous skier. Yet young skiers are fully encouraged and the resort has won the coveted Famille Plus Award numerous times over. The resort has plenty of off ski activity, the local team makes the most of the sports centre, the aqua dome and the numerous hiking, mountain biking and golfing options on the doorstep.

With its breathtaking views, a dynamic après-ski scene and a range of excellent facilities, it is clear to see why Méribel has a loyal following. Firm favourites include Folie Douce le Montchu and for a more relaxed dinner don’t forget Le Cèpe restaurant.

Its proximity and convenience to (just 80km), makes it “weekendable”, while its relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere is an enormous draw for those looking for a genuine ski resort experience. Think 650km of interconnecting pistes straddling France and Switzerland.

My favourite spot in the region would have to be at the highest point on the Les Gets side of the mountain-Le Ranfoilly, from where you can see Mont Blanc on a clear day. After fresh snow, the ‘off-piste’ skiing is outstanding on this part of the mountain. Morzine has an ever-expanding array of shops, bars and restaurants and the Portes du Soleil region is a hotspot for summer, as well as winter activities. Although a firm favourite in the Alps for many years, Val d’Isère has recently grown beyond all recognition to be one of the most prestigious and sought-after ski resorts in the world. While being a little further from Geneva airport than some resorts, one is rewarded by its high altitude skiing and “snow sure” pistes for all abilities. It consequently benefits from a long season, normally from early December to the end of April, not to mention the Tignes glacier, which is open in the summer.

After a tough day on the mountain, the town comes alive with people enjoying the wide range of shops, lively bars and high quality restaurants. My tip for an unforgettable day would be to take on the famous ‘Face’ piste, enjoy a delicious lunch at Restaurant L’Etincelle and finish with a vin chaud or two at Bar La Baraque. The sun will be shining of course.

41 FRANCE ANNECY

€ Au Coeur Du Mont Veyrier 40km €10,000 (Geneva)

Known as ‘the Venice of the Alps’, Annecy is an incredibly charming town on the north side of one of Europe’s most beautiful lakes. I am perhaps slightly biased as it is my home, however few could argue with the “je ne sais quoi” atmosphere Annecy exudes. It is the capital of the Haute Savoie and a larger town than many realise when passing through on the way to resorts from Geneva. Some of the world’s best ski resorts such as Chamonix, Courchevel, Méribel and Megève are on the doorstep and this provides an enviable choice of locations for activities in winter and summer.

Annecy itself comes to life in the summer when the lake is filled with water sports enthusiasts and cyclists and runners tour the lake all hours of the day. There are literally hundreds of trails in the local mountains and the views from the summits must be seen to be believed. Whatever the season, the town always has a convivial feel. Tourists mingle with locals while browsing the many shops or enjoy ‘un verre’ or Haute Savoie delicacy in one of the numerous bars or restaurants.

The resort has obtained an international status as one of the most popular luxury resorts in the Alps, with visitors streaming in from all over the globe. Boasting 300 days of sunshine a year, the conditions couldn’t be more idyllic to whizz down the pistes in your shades while enjoying the crisp mountain air.

Finish off the morning ski with a glorious lunch on Carrefour’s sunlit terrace, the Rosti Creblet is an absolute must-have. Verbier is a foodie’s dream, with a cuisine to satisfy everyone’s cravings, whether you’re after a cheesy fondue on the mountain, a succulent burger and delicious cocktails from Shed or even a curry from the town’s Gunpowder restaurant. With an increasingly varied choice of luxury hotels (this season sees the newly refurbished Hotel Verbier open its doors) and an array of popular night spots such as Farinet and Farm Club, Verbier thrives on its laid back social scene, as much as does on its high mountain skiing.

Kitzbühel is not only home to the Savills office, but is also one of the most legendary sports towns in the Alps with more than 125 years of successful skiing history. Kitzbühel is known worldwide as a winter holiday destination combining tradition with extraordinary charm. Easy accessibility (three international airports within approx. 1 to 1,5 hours drive), long winters (season from end of october to beginning of May), a good snow record, unique events such as the famous Hahnenkamm Race and a sophisticated but laid-back atmosphere, all characterise Kitzbühel.

Those who only know Kitzbühel in winter still have most of the region’s charm to discover. Kitzbühel is a year-round destination due to the fantastic hiking, cycling and golf opportunities and the beautiful lakes in the region.

There are stunning places all over but maybe one of the most beautiful places, with a panoramic view in winter and enjoying some lovely food, is the Panorama Alm in the ski area. In summer time, Lake Schwarzsee is one of the most famous spots to relax and enjoy some drinks in the evening.

What makes the town so unique is its charming blend of time-honoured traditions and modern lifestyles. Kitzbühel’s historic centre boasts great restaurants, small cafes, trendy bars and discotheques, a casino and a movie theatre, offering something for all to enjoy. The perfect place to unwind and relax after a fantastic skiing day in the Kitzbühel Alps.

The Savills office is located in Zell am See, a vibrant town in both the summer and winter with so much to do right on your doorstep. Many people travel to Zell during the winter months for skiing and snowboarding, but it is just as popular, if not more so, during the summer for the extensive hiking, biking, golf and water sports on Lake Zell.

The Schmittenhohe mountain boasts the longest and steepest ski run in the area, Trass 14, which is over 4 km long, a 1000m vertically and has a 70% gradient. This is a fabulous run in good snow or a freshly groomed morning, although is best avoided towards the end of the season.

During both seasons, frequent events take place such as the wonderful firework displays on show at New Years Eve and at the “Stadt-Festivals” which happen every Wednesday night in July and August, here the pedestrian area becomes alive as pop-up outdoor bars line the cobbled streets and live music plays until the early hours.

My favourite restaurants on the mountain to enjoy the wonderful views and local Austrian cuisine are Schnap Hans, Eder Hutte (where they do the best brunch on the mountain) and the Areit Lounge for raucous après ski.

In town, the terrace of the Grand Hotel has breathtaking views of Lake Zell and is a magical spot for a cocktail before dinner. Don’t miss lunch on the terrace of Golf Club Zell am See where you can enjoy breathtaking views towards the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, or sink a sundowner after a round of golf.
