Swedish Musical Heritage and The Royal Swedish Academy of Music The purpose of Swedish Musical Heritage is to make accessible forgotten gems of Swedish music and make them a natural feature of the contemporary repertoire and musicology. This it does through editions of sheet music that is no longer protected by copyright, and texts about the composers and their works. This material is available in the project’s online database, where the sheet music can be freely downloaded. The project is run under the auspices of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in association with the Music and Theatre Library of Sweden and Svensk Musik. The Royal Swedish Academy of Music was founded in 1771 by King Gustav III in order to promote the composition and performance of music in Sweden.     Makten att begära och tvånget att försaka Tourettesyndromets betydelse för Ludvig Normans liv och verk Av Tomas Löndahl Inledning Ludvig Norman (1831–85) var en av portalfigurerna i sin tids svenska musikliv. Ändå är bilden av honom som person i många fall motsägelsefull och diffus. Det är lätt att rada upp hans storartade och (i ett längre perspektiv inte sällan) avgörande insatser som hovkapellmästare, konsertorganisatör, musiker, tonsättare, pedagog, akademile- damot (även preses KMA 1874–75), debattör, skribent och kritiker. Men det som frap- perade mig i de samtida skildringarna av honom var de till synes oförenliga ytterligheterna. Han framstår som radikal men konservativ, som dådkraftig men pas- siv, som stark men vek, som stridbar men feg, som livlig men loj, som suverän diri- gent men skygg för främmande människor. Även bortsett från att varje människa äger olika egenskaper och att de flesta under livets gång utvecklar sina skilda sidor i olika grad, fanns det i detta ”glapp” något för mig lockande att utforska1. Så – vem var han egentligen som människa? Vad finns kvar när man skalar bort den svassande retoriken i hyllnings- och minnestexter? Och hur framstår han i sina egna texter? Jag har i min forskning jagat källor samt analyserat och syntetiserat de samtida vittnesbörden – både hans egna och andras – och därigenom kommit fram till en delvis helt ny bild av Norman. Fram träder nu bilden av en genom sjukdom svårt plågad man. Frågan är om de nyvunna kunskaperna har något förklaringsvärde när det gäller hans eget skapande.     Introduction to: Kirsti Grinde, Svensk musiktidning (1880-1913) Copyright © 2001 RIPM Consortium Ltd Répertoire international de la presse musicale (www.ripm.org) Svensk musiktidning Svensk musiktidning [Swedish music journal], the most important and longest running nineteenth-century Swedish music periodical, was published in Stockholm from 1 January 1880 to 1 May 1913. The journal was initially titled Necken: svensk musiktidning. 1 In the 15 December 1880 issue, the journal's editor Alfred Lundgren announced that he was too busy to carry on, and passed the periodical on to the music publishing company Huss & Beer. The publication then continued under the name Svensk musiktidning. 2 The journal produced twenty-four issues annually through 1883; these appeared at the beginning and in the middle of each month. From 1884 the number of issues was reduced to twenty, with no issues being published during July and August, the "dead season." In 1899 the two June issues were printed as a do.uble issue. This arrangement continued until 1902, when the double issue became the last issue of the year. The unexpected death of the editor Frans Huss in March 1912 resulted in a gap in the journal's publication until 1 September when a double issue appeared. In a note to the readers the new editor, Gunnar Norlen, promised to publish a complete volume. To fulfill his promise Norlen then produced five issues and complet~d the volume with a quadruple issue. During the spring of 1913 Svensk musiktidning appeared irregularly and finally ceased publication after printing a double issue, no. 7/8.

Eric Ericson is also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and honorary president of the International Federation for Choral Music. Choral singing is an integral part of Swedish culture. People have sung in choirs here for generations and Sweden now has an international reputation as a nation of choristers with both breadth and quality. Choirs and vocal ensembles can be heard in churches and concert halls, in workplaces and Eric Ericson on public squares, in shopping malls and hospitals, in castles and cottages. It has been estimated that about half a million people in Sweden are regular members of choirs.     The Romantic Label Compact Discs 2008 Dear musical friends, Looking back on the catalogue from 2004 I can now see that we have developed the catalogue further with a number of Roman - tics. Some of the composers are nearly completely unknown today. They may merely serve as examples of the absolutely astounding amount of Romantic orchestral music, both unperformed and un - recorded. We are happy to say that this developement has brought us new distributors. The agents somehow do an ungrateful task: everybody expects CDs to be available everywhere, but somebody must import them and distribute them. I wish to thank the distributors for all the hard and enthusastic work they do and my praise also goes to stores and shops, with hardworking staff. We have also seen the developement of download. It is up to the computer industry to provide the public with good quality com - puters so that the music could be heard properly. The future: Again, I wish to thank all Sterling enthusiasts for providing me with a number of interesting ideas for recordings also in the future. And why take interest in the forgotten compos- ers who wrote this now silent music? Swedish Musical Heritage is the name of a six year long project whose purpose is to make music that is rarely played more accessible, so that it might gain a new au- dience. The project is funded by the Swedish Royal Academy of Music. Biographical texts on nearly 300 Swedish composers, mainly unknown even for specialists in Swed- ish music history, provide a background for musical works. The writing of these bio- graphical texts, parallel to and outside of the narrow selection covered in music his- tory books, is the topic of this article. The article’s authors are involved in a variety of ways in the work on these biog- raphies and write from their own respective roles. As a whole, the article seeks less to present the project itself than to motivate and discuss the work of writing biogra- phies on Swedish composers, many of whom are unknown even to specialists. The biographical perspective is, of course, an older method of writing history, but is very much relevant for this project. What are the ramifi cations of once again implementing this perspective and, on top of that, applying it to composers who have never been a part of music history’s canon? Man har hittat instrument och ljudredskap från forntiden, men ingen musik. Först från medeltiden när munkar och nunnor började teckna ner kyrkans melodier, finns musik bevarad till vår tid. Med Vasakungarna och renässanshoven under 1500-talet började på allvar vårt utbyte med kontinenten. Och 1600-talets stormaktstid innebar att vi blev del- aktiga i en nordeuropeisk musikkultur – tonsättare, musiker och ensembler reste mellan den tidens metropoler kring Östersjön. Vid den tiden skrevs de första konsertstyckena med svensk sångtext. Men först ett sekel senare lyckades ”den svenska musikens fader” Johan Helmich Roman (1694–1758) visa att svenska språket var ”böjeligt” till musik. Roman var en lysande tonsättare och omsorgsfull konsertarrangör, något som beredde marken för en musikalisk glansperiod, den gustavianska epoken. Då skapades de första operorna på svenska med musik av invandrade tonsättare som J G Naumann, J M Kraus och J C F Haeffner. 1800-talet var framförallt sångens århundrade. Manskörer i Uppsala och Lund och sångare som Jenny Lind inspirerade till en ny blomstringstid i slutet av seklet, då romanskonserterna nådde internationella höjder hos tonsättare som Emil Sjögren, Wilhelm Peterson-Berger, Wilhelm Stenhammar och senare Ture Rangström och Gösta Nystroem.
