Bailiff Michel Bohé OSJ, CMSJ Noteworthy memories of the past have, on the 8th of March 2014, made my visit to Malta a pleasurable and yet sentimental visit purposely made to celebrate, with the members of the Malta Priory, the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of ‘The Malta Priory’. Throughout these past fifty years, the Malta Priory has under- gone great changes - some good but others painful to the extent that schisms started to take place right after the death of King Peter. The main and most important change was when The Malta Priory was elevated, in February 22, 1970, to a Grand Priory to be known as the Russian Grand Priory of Malta. and to become the mother and the base of the Order as it stands today. From the many schisms that had occurred, a fortunate and positive move took place in April 2006 when, by the signing of a Concordat, a number of Priories joined the Russian Grand Priory of Malta to return back within their home base and International Headquarters in Malta.

The Bulletin Malta Priory Order of St. John of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaller Russian Grand Priory - Malta Under the Constitution of His Late Majesty King Peter II of Yugoslavia R Nos.52875-528576 No. 123 2017-1 A message from the Grand Commander & Grand Prior of the Russian Grand Priory of Malta, Bailiff Paul M. Borg OSJ Since my installation as Grand Commander in December 2002, the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller, its Administrative Arm and its International Headquarters itself have all undergone great changes. New members - Knights and Dames - have been invested into the Order while a few have, on the other hand, lost interest and resigned. Others have even been expelled from the Order. Apart from the then existing Priories that have increased the number of Commanderies and the number of members, new Priories and new Commanderies have sprouted in other parts of the globe so as to be added to the ones that had already existed. The International Headquarters was in a grievous state and had to undergo and is still undergoing an overall refurbishment. All these activities had to be dealt with ‘on the spur of the moment’ with great difficulty and hardship. Had it not been for the donations and voluntary work given by some of our Knights/Dames and other members of the Order, all this could not have been possible to achieve. This voluminous amount of work did not stop – nor did it slow down – the Council from keeping the Malta Priory able to uphold its main aim, namely that of continuing to live up to the motto of the Order ‘Pro Fide, Pro Utilitate Hominum’ thus at all times being prompt in its generosity in the giving of donations to those who truly are in need.

PREFACE Editor desires to say a few, a very few, THEwords of preface by way of explanation of the origin and object of the present volume. Its inception commenced with a successful illus- trated lecture delivered by Major Yate at the United Service Institution, which he wished the Order to reprint for general publication. The Council thought it expedient that the narrative should be somewhat enlarged, and circumstances preventing Major Yate from superintending the work, it was intrusted by the Council to the Genealogist, who again found it somewhat beyond his powers, and had to apply to the Librarian for assistance, especially in the later and more immediately interesting portions of the narrative, though retaining the general supervision of the whole. The Editor would adopt as his own the apology of " the author of the books of Maccabees : If I have done well, and as is fitting the story, it is that which I desired but if ; slenderly and meanly, it is that which I could attain unto." BOOK REVIEWS Elizaveta Zolina (ed.),The Venerable Icon of Our Lady of Philermos in Art, History and Religion, Valletta: Progress Press, 2002, 64 pp. If the Romans could conceive of books as having a life of their own, with ups and downs just like humans-habent sua fata libelli, says Terentianus Maurus in his work on Horace-surely this holds even more true of icons, where social context, art and religion coalesce; but perhaps of few more so than the icon of Our Lady of Philermos, whose vicissitudes have not been fully unravelled to this day. The story here told in succinct form shows once more how facts fascinate more than fiction, especially when all the aforementioned elements blend together harmoniously, a veritable harmony in discord! Thus, the homecoming of a copy of an icon long believed to be out in hiding has something memorable about it, especially ... Considering the time, 25-26 January 2001, which, by the telling of one of the most prominent hierarchs in the Russian Metropolitan Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, himself Chairman of the Department for For eign Affairs of the Russian Orthodox Church, coincides with the most difficult period for ecumenism between the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox Churches since Vatican II (p.13). Considering the place, Malta, known for its hospitality at the crossroads of culture, and where, in the words of the Russian Ambassador to Malta, Dr. Sergey Zotov, at whose request a replica of the Philermos icon was depicted by Montenegrin monks, Michail Gorbachev and George Bush chose to end the cold war itself (p.

SMOM and Malta issues by Carmel G. Bonavia (Sunday Times, 24th November 1996 with additions by Dr. A. Bonnici) By a decree of May 20, 1966, the Grand Magistracy of SMOM revived its own postal service under the name of Poste Magistrali del Sovrano Militare Ordine di Malta with Comm. Remo Cappelli as its head. A central post office at Palazzo Malta in Rome was opened through the entrance in Via Bocca del Leone. Another post office was inaugurated at Villa Malta on the Aventine Hill. Both properties of the Order enjoy extraterritorial rights recognised by Italy. For the inauguration of the Poste Magistrate a set of nine stamps, printed by the world-known security printers Thomas de la Rue of London and Carte Yalori Staderini of Rome. To emphasise its independence of any other entity, SMOM expressed the value of each stamp in the old denomination of scudo, tari and grana. One scudo equals 12 tari or 24 grani, the currency used by the Order during its stay in Malta (1530-1798). Postage stamps are still regarded as a symbol of independence and places a country at par with others. SMOM showed its intention to issue stamps years before 1966. Sixteen years earlier, in 1950, the Order issued a set of nine letter seals (chiudilettere) designed by E. Pizzi and printed by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca della Stato of Rome. They featured a cross-section of the Order its foundation and seats in Rhodes, Tripoli, Malta and Rome. They were made available at the minimal cost of one Italian lira.
