Coloured Breeds Sale 1/10/17

“A fantastic day out” that was the words of many describing the 13th Annual Coloured Breeds Sheep Sale at Llandovery. 1731 Sheep were presented for sale with 1523 finding new homes at a clearance rate of 88%.

Topping the sale and creating a new sale record was the Badgerface Torwen ram lamb from D Lewis, Pentwyn, Pumsaint placed reserve champion in the pre-sale show it went on to sell for 1400gns to T Evans, Lledrod. Torwen females topped at 420gns for an ewe lamb from W Morgan, Nantgwynne and sold to G Shrubsall, Faversham. 320gns secured the Champion Torwen, an ewe lamb from DRL Williams, for DM Evans, Conwil Elfed. Mr Williams winning the Dai Lewis Memorial Challenge Cup.

At 1000gns GV Jones, Pencae sold his Torddu ram lamb to K Edwards Rhayader. 700gns was paid by the Torddu judge Morys Ioan, for a Ram Lamb for C, A & R Joseph, Lloyney.

The top price Herdwick was sold to M Weir, Cumbria who judged the 2 year old ram champion in the pre-sale show. He achieved 800gns for K Flye, Libanus. Females peaked at 110gns for a pair of shearling ewes from N Beynon, Gower selling to AR & DJ Reed, Pontfaen.

The Blue Texel ring was a hive of activity with the top price going to J Powell, Llwyngwilym at 700gns for a six year old ewe selling to DG Lewis, Pumsaint. Other females sold at 680gns, 620gns and 600gns all for J Powell. R Jones, Tyisaf also achieved 600gns & 580gns for their ewe lambs.

Black Welsh Mountains were dominated by W Workman, Llywel, selling two shearling rams for 550gns & 500gns to R May, Macclesfield and setting a new breed record price for an ewe lamb at 500gns to D & R Rowlands, Anglesey

Balwens peaked at 720gns for a shearling ram from A & L & G Samuel, Aberedw selling to G Jones Llanllwni. 450gns for a shearling ram from S & C Thomas, Orllwyn selling to G Bowden, Seven Sisters and 440gns for a three year old ram from A Davies, Swansea selling to G Jones. Females peaked at 220gns and 190gns for ewe lambs for D & E & I Downes, Pumsaint selling to B Griffiths, Anglesey. The Champion Balwen went to DRL Williams, Talley winning their second breed championship of the day with an ewe lamb selling for 200gns to E & D Jones, Maesteilo who also gave 210gns for an ewe lamb from the same vendor.

Icelandic shearling ewes peaked at 100gns for D Harries sellng to R Hanson, Gower.

Shetlands peaked at 60gns for ewe lambs from B Evans, Astcote selling to Wells, . 150gns was paid for a 3 year old Black Leicester Longwool Ram by A Gravelle from B Evans Astcote.

Coloured Ryeland females were in great demand with a top all of 380gns for an ewe lamb from NP & EJ Morgan, Crymych selling to N Burton, Yorkshire. 300gns was paid for a shearling ewe for the same vendor by RL & PA Whitecase, Montgomery. A shearling ewe from T Jones, Bow Street also sold for 300gns to DG Lewis, Sennybridge.

A Jacob Ram Lamb from SL Harries, Llandeilo sold for 200gns to RI Owen, Llanbrynmair. Arwel Jones, peaked at 180gns for a 2 year and 3 year old ewes selling to DT Owen & Son, Ystrad Meurig.

Coloured Mules reached 500gns for a yearling ram from E & D Jones, Capel Isaac. Females peaked at 150gns for an ewe lamb from TE Hughes, selling to D Thomas, Gwynfe who also purchased a pen of 3 shearling ewes from J Griffiths, Newport at 145gns each.

Coloured Dorsets sold to 180gns, 170gns, and 160gns for three pairs of shearling ewes consigned by G Davies, Clunderwen and purchased by Messrs Robinson, Wigton, Cumbria.

The Crossbred section was dominated by the Black Beltex X Texel peaking at 310gns for a pair of ewe lambs from DJ Lloyd & Co, Trefeglwys selling to A Davies, Newtown. 300gns for a pair of ewe lambs from EM Williams, Pumsaint selling to S Myatt, Anglesey. 280gns for three ewe lambs from DJ Lloyd & Co to M Owens, Glantre. Others sold at 210gns, 200gns, and 180gns from the same vendor.

170gns was paid by DGH Davies, Pontfaen for a yearling Swaledale X Herdwick

140gns for a pair of Lincoln X ewe lambs bought by E Bateman, Trecastle
