    Geologic Resources Inventory Workshop Summary Great Smoky Mountain National Park May 8-9, 2000 National Park Service Geologic Resources Division and Natural Resources Information Division Version: Draft of July 24, 2000 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY An inventory workshop was held for Great Smoky Mountain National Park (GRSM) on May 8-9, 2000 to view and discuss the park’s geologic resources, to address the status of geologic mapping by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), various academics, the North Carolina Geological Survey (NCGS), and the Tennessee Geological Survey (TNGS) for compiling both paper and digital maps, and to assess resource management issues and needs. Cooperators from the NPS Geologic Resources Division (GRD), Natural Resources Information Division (NRID), NPS Great Smoky Mountain NP, USGS, NCGS, TNGS, University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UTK) and the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) were present for the two-day workshop. (See Appendix A, Great Smoky Mountain NP Geological Resources Inventory Workshop Participants, May 8-9, 2000) Day one involved a field trip throughout Great Smoky Mountain NP led by USGS Geologist Scott Southworth. Day two involved a daylong scoping session to present overviews of the NPS Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) program, the Geologic Resources Division, and the on going Geologic Resources Inventory (GRI) for North Carolina. Round table discussions involving geologic issues for Great Smoky Mountain NP included interpretation, paleontologic resources, the status of cooperative geologic mapping efforts, sources of available data, geologic hazards, and action items generated from this meeting.     NC Waterfalls • Mingo Falls – At 120 feet tall, the waterfall is one of the tallest and most spectacular in the southern Appalachians. The hike to the waterfall is only 0.4 miles in length, but is considered moderate in difficulty. • Directions from Sunset Farm Cabins – Drive west on 74 and continue north on 441 towards Cherokee for 5.2 miles. When it dead ends at US 19 turn right for 0.4 miles, turn left at traffic light (US 441 N) towards the Smoky Mountain Park, continue 2.3 miles and turn right on Big Cove Road. Continue 5.2 miles turn right crossing a bridge over the river, straight ahead is a parking lot and trail. Keep an eye out for signs. Climb 170 steps to Mingo Falls. • Tom’s Branch Falls, Indian Creek Falls, and Juney Whank Falls (At Deep Creek) – An easy 1.6 mile roundtrip hike will allow you to enjoy two beautiful waterfalls in the Deep Creek area. Walk Deep Creek Trail 0.7 mile to the junction with Indian Creek Trail. On your way you can view elegant Tom Branch Falls located on the far side of Deep Creek. Turn right at the junction with Indian Creek Trail and proceed approximately 200' to Indian Creek Falls. The falls are 25 feet in height. Juney Whank Falls is divided into an upper and lower section. Both can be viewed from the footbridge which crosses Juney Whank Branch at the falls. Together they drop 90 feet from top to bottom. The trail to the waterfall is 0.8 miles roundtrip and is considered moderate in difficulty • Directions from Sunset Farm Cabins – Drive west on highway 74 to exit 67 (Bryson City) and turn right on Spring Street, Continue through 1st traffic light and follow directions to Deep Creek Campground.

Carpenter This guide describes in very abbreviated form some of the geology of the areas through which the trip will pass and gives slightly more detailed descriptions of Cowee Creek, the Terrell Bryson pegmatite, and Corundum Hill (Fig. 1). MILEAGE DESCRIPTION AND COMMENTS 0.0 Gatlinburg Civic Auditorium. 0.6 Leave Gatlinburg--trave1 on U.S. 441 East for next 1,6 miles along approximate trace of Gatlinburg- Huskey Gap fault (concealed). 0.9 Exposed on right is the Precambrian Elkmont Sandstone (pGe)(basal part of the Great Smoky Group) which con- sists of interbedded medium- to fine-grained felds- pathic sandstone and gray fine-grained, argillaceous sandstone and slate. This formation in Bald Top Ridge, 7 miles east of Gatlinburg, is about 3000 feet thick (Hadley and Goldsmith, 1963, p. 49-50). _/Publication authorized by the Director, U,S.
