Let’s go back 100 years and see what was in 1915.

The average life expectancy for men was 47 years Fuel for cars was only sold in drug stores. Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub. Only 8 percent had a telephone. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour. The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000.00 per year. A dentist could make $2500.00 per year. A veterinarian could make between $1500.00 and $4000.00 per year. A mechanical engineer could make about $5000.00 More than 95 percent of all births took place at home. Ninety percent of all doctors had no college education. Instead they attended so-call medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and the government as “substandard”. Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents for a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month. They used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason. The five leading causes of death were: Pneumonia and influenza, Tuberculosis, Diarrhea, Heart Disease and Stroke. The American flag had 45 stars. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was only 30. Crossword puzzles, canned beer and iced tea hadn’t been invented yet. There was neither a Mother’s Day, nor a Father’s Day. Two out of every 10 adults could not read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at local drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, “Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach, bowels and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health”. Eighteen percent of households had at least one full time servant or domestic help. And last, there were about 230 reported murders in the entire United States.

It is amazing how fast everything around us is changing. It is impossible to imagine what it will be like in another 100 years.

Editors Note: Just some of the things that I remember that happened since 1915 was: WW-I, WW-II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm, Desert Shield, War on Terror, Great Depression in the late twenties and early thirties, putting man on the moon, TV, computers, cell phones, electricity in the rural areas and etc. to name a few.

The list could go on and on. The generations from 1915 to present have had to learn a lot and continue to learn more.

GCGS Deaths for September, October, November 2015

Editors Note: This listing shows the deaths from the obituaries of three newspapers (Oxford Public Ledger, Butner/Creedmoor News, Henderson Dispatch) for the specified time. Names are listed as they appear in the papers. Delayed Birth Certificates on file at the Register of Deeds Office in the Court House in Oxford, NC

Editors Note: The delayed birth certificates were completed after 1913 when the law was added that everyone would have a birth certificate. These can be found for Granville County at the Register of Deeds Office in the Courthouse and at Vital Records Branch in Raleigh. To get a delayed birth certificate you had to show proof of either a Bible Record, school record, affidavit from a family member or other proof in order to get one. An example; my mother did not get one due to no parent living, no Bible Record, no date of birth on school record. The only proof was her word that she was born on March 7, 1896.

Outstanding Events in Granville Co. July 23, 1929

Some of the Things the Older Citizens Remember

The little streamlet that passes through the High School ground is fed by a spring on Spring Street a few yards east of Bell Street. Many years ago it was claimed by aged residents, the water from this spring was a panacea for all ailments.

In the lowlands, a half mile below this spring, there is a large flat rock protruding about the ground. We were told that the people of Oxford during the War Between the States swept this rock clean for the purpose of burning

Granville Connections 111 GCGS 1746, Inc. December 2015 corncobs for soda. The marks of the fire on the stone sixty years ago are still visible.

On a hillside above this stream is a clump of wild grape vines from which twigs were cut during the period of the War Between the States to make hoop skirts for the belles of that period. This vine survived its many trimmings and is in a healthy state today, but the styles have undergone a radical change and the vine will never be used again for the same purpose.

Another aged citizen with a good memory informs the Public Ledger that the snow storm that swept down on Oxford during the winter of 1857 was the severest in his recollection. The snow fell to the depth of five feet on level ground and drifted in places to a depth of ten feet. It was impossible for several days, he said, to walk from the Osborn Hotel on Williamsboro Street to Horner Hill.

Another aged citizen with a keen memory recalls the great flood in this section during the Spring of 1870. Every bridge in Granville County was washed away and the roads were impassable for several weeks. At the Harrisburg crossing of the old Oxford and Henderson road, a mile east of Oxford a man and his daughter in attempting to cross the stream in a buggy were washed down stream a hundred yards and lodged in the fork of a tree and were rescued during the night. The horse was suffocated and the buggy badly demolished, he said.

The outstanding event in the memory of an aged citizen was the early frost in 1881. If his memory serves him right, the night of 14th of August of that year was so cold it was necessary to build a log fire to heat the house warm. A heavy frost accumulated during the night and all vegetation was killed and the leaves fell from the trees a few days later. The reason he remembers the event so well he said, was because a colored boy on his father’s place touched his tongue to a broad wagon tire to see if it was frost. His tongue stuck to the tire and he was released by the use of hot water, he said.

Another aged citizen recalls the financial crisis in 1892. The whole country was wild, he said. Everybody lost confidence and you could not borrow a cent and everybody was afraid to loan what little cash they had in hand. Every man you met talked about “hard times” and dreamed about “tight times,” he said. He wound up by saying that the present generation has no conception what a financial panic means, and “I never want to see another one so long as I live.”

Speaking of ancient buildings in our midst, no one in Oxford is old enough to remember when the present court house was built. The key-stone over the front door tells the tale. The corner stone was laid on the Fourth of July 1838 – 91 years ago. Quite a number remember when there was a fence in front of the court house and when the annex was built. The workmanship and the material used in the building is of the best, and the structure is greatly admired for its architectural beauty.
