ABSTRACT Two newly recorded Helophorus Fabricius, 1775 species for the Turkish fauna, Helophorus (Rhopalhelophorus) paramontanus Angus, 1985 and H. (R.) kerimi Ganglbauer, 1901 are compared against Turkish specimens (private collection). A list of subgenus Rhopalhelophorus species known from Turkey and their distribution in Turkey and in the world is presented.

Key words: Coleoptera, Helophoridae, Helophorus, distribution, Turkey

INTRODUCTION The Helophoridae is a large family comprising only a single subfamily of a single genus, Helophorus. This genus comprises about 190 species, represented in three major zoogeographical regions (Palearctic, Nearctic and Ethiopian) (Angus, 1984- 1992; Balfour-Browne, 1958; Hansen, 1999; Hebauer, 1994; Chiesa, 1959; Smetana, 1985). Aim of this study is to make a contribution to the Turkish Aquatic Coleoptera Fauna. Forty-five species have been previously recorded belonging to the five subgenera (Atracthelophorus, Rhopalhelophorus, Transithelophorus, Empleurus, Eutrichelophorus, Trichelophorus, Helophorus s.str.) in Turkey, 52 INCEKARA, U.,MART, A., ERMAN, O.

(Angus, 1985, 1992; Hansen, 1987-1999; Lenistea, 1978; Mart & Erman, 2001; Ýncekara et al., 2002). Two species are new records from Turkey.

MATERIALS AND METHODS Specimens of two species were collected in different surveys of the aquatic Coleoptera of the East Anatolian region since 1998 and this study entirely based on private collection. The beetles were killed by Ethyl acetate or within 70% alcohol solution. Aedeagophores of beetles that had been cleaned with brush were dissected out under the stereo microscope and left to be exposed in 10% KOH solution for nearly 1-2 hours. The figures of aedeagophore were drawn using a Nikon type 104 microscope.

Head with dark metallic reflections. “Y” groove distinct, its stem expanded anteriorly. Maxillary palpi yellowish brown, slightly elongate, terminal segment asymmetrical, darkened at the tip. Antenne brown, 9-segmented, club loose. Pronotum shining, golden yellow, widest at base of anterior third. Anterior margin of pronotum slightly sinuate. There is a metallic green area on pronotum (antero-medially) covered with fine granules. Groves shallow, median groove narrowed medially and tapered to the ends but, doesn’t reach anterior margin of pronotum. Inner face of median groove serrated, its floor irregular, with granules. Submedian grooves narrow, deeper than others. Marginal grooves expanded anteriorly. Internal intervals slightly raised, its surface covered with fine granules, angled outwards medially. Median intervals distinctly expanded anteriorly and posteriorly. Externals with larger granules. Lateral margins raised, finely serrate. Elytra brown, finely striate. Interstices broad, twice the width of stria. Sometimes additional less impressed microscopic row of punctures may be occurring. Flanks not visible from below. Legs yellowish brown, long and slender. Claw segment rather long, its apex darker. All tarsi five segmented, dorsal surface covered with long swimming hairs. Aedeagophore 0.5 mm in length, basal piece rather short. Parameres long, outer margins emarginate medially, tapered at the tip. Sclerotized portion of parameres almost reach to apex. Median lobe as long as parameres, its apex oval. There is a narrow band along the anterior margin. Lateral margins straightened posteriorly. Internal intervals obtusely angled outwards medially. Externals covered with larger granules. Grooves distinct, median groove narrowed anteriorly and posteriorly. Elytra reddish (more pale at male), strongly striate. Scutellum oval, more darker than pronotum and elytra. Elytral flanks not visible from below. Legs yellow to brown. Tarsi five segmented, dorsal surface covered with well developed swimming hairs. Claw segment longer and darker. Aedeagophore 0.5 mm in length. Outer margin of parameres straight, bending outwards towards to apex. Inner face of parameres indented. Median lobe coarser, as long as parameres. Struts obtusely angled. Basal piece as long as parameres (Fig. 1.B). Material examined: Erzincan, Spikör Pass, 02.07.2003, 1 male; Erzincan, Çayýrlý, Verimli Village, 02.07.2003, 1 male, 3 females, 27.08.2003, 3 males, 3 females; Erzincan, city center, 02.07.2003, 1 male, 3 females. Distribution: (Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia). Angus (1971b, 1992; Hansen, 1999).

DISCUSSION Helophorus (R.) paramontanus was introduced to science by Angus, (1985) and only known from type locality (Tajikistan) (Angus, 1985; Hansen, 1999). It was very rare in the research area (East Anatolian Region). Since 1998, only three samples could be collected. In respect of many morphological characters, our findings are in accordance with the results obtained from previous studies except body length and sinuate anterior margin of pronotum. 60 INCEKARA, U.,MART, A., ERMAN, O.

Fig. 1. Aedeagophore, A) Helophorus (R.) paramontanus, B) Helophorus (R.) kerimi

H. (R.) kerimi is a steppe and semi desert areas, distributed from Transcucasia through Iran and middle Asian republics of the USSR to southern east Siberia and Mongolia (Angus, 1992; Hansen, 1999). Surface of external intervals of our samples is larger granules than described before. Up to now, forty-five species of Helophorus have been recorded from Turkey (Hansen, 1987-1999; Mart & Erman, 2001; Ýncekara et al., 2002; Angus, 1984- 1995). The number of Helophorus species, together with these two new records is increased up to forty-seven. The type localities of many Helophorus species (H. özkani Ýncekara, 2004, H. zehrae Ýncekara, 2004, H. erzurumica Ýncekara, 2004, H. difficilis Angus, 1988, H. ponticus Angus, 1988 and H. helenae Angus, 1998) are in Turkey (Ýncekara, 2004; Angus, 1988, 1998). In Turkey, having various geographical regions and different climates, the number of Helophorus species must be much higher than recorded so far. So new studies should be conducted intensively on this group of insects. Distribution of Turkish Helophorus Fabricius, 1775 61
