For the past fifteen years we have met in person for an evening that has become one of Santa Fe’s most popular events. Last February, 900 guests packed the Santa Fe Community Convention Center for food, wine, conviviality, and most importantly an opportunity to support the work of the Foundation through a silent and live auction, and a paddle raiser. While it’s challenging to replicate that festive spirit through an online event – we’re doing our darndest to do just that! In addition to sharing the customary patient and provider stories, and honorary and memorial tributes, we’ve added celebrity appearances and performances created especially for the Cancer Foundation for New Mexico’s virtual event. With our online accessibility, we are excited to reach many new supporters who can join us from afar – welcome to the family! Even during the pandemic, our generous community item donors have made this virtual silent auction, at 425 auction lots strong, one of our most spectacular! Working with our donors, we help to save the lives of our neighbors here in northern New Mexico. Patients are able to begin their cancer treatment confident that they will be supported until their treatment is completed. It is with the financial contributions of our generous donors that we have been able to keep our promise… no patient who qualifies financially for our services will ever be turned away. In the past year, the Cancer Foundation for New Mexico accomplished the following with 2020 Sweetheart Auction Revenue: • Supported 28,841 patient visits* • Reimbursed 473,323 transportation miles • Provided 727 lodging nights • Supplied 1,372 grocery cards to enable patients to eat nutritionally while they are undergoing treatment • T o all cancer patients, regardless of financial need, CFFNM offered support groups and volunteer hospitality during treatment *Please note: Due to COVID-19 protocols, telehealth visits have supplemented in-person visits for many patients. By Mark Swed, LA Times Staff Writer OJAI — When the unofficial patron saint of this charmed valley, Jiddu Krishnamurti, gave outdoor public talks at his foundation here in the 1970s and '80s, birds sang and the mountains in the background seemed especially radiant. But the stern spiritual leader would put up with no New Age mellowness, insisting that his laid-back listeners get serious for an hour. What he had to say about Soprano (Anne Cusack / LAT) human nature, he would repeat again and again, was not entertainment. The Ojai Music Festival doesn't exactly scorn entertainment, and the 60th edition of this short and relaxed but significant festival produced its unapologetic share of entertainment last weekend in the Libbey Bowl. The featured composer was the enormously engaging Osvaldo Golijov, who takes some of his inspiration from popular culture. Dawn Upshaw, the most down to earth of sopranos, was the star soloist. In residence was the excellent Atlanta Symphony, which, under its likable music director, Robert Spano, proudly puts a happy face (even a smiley one) on new music. The new music ensemble known as eighth blackbird, which has a tendency to theatrically glad-hand new work, was also there. Nothing, though, could have been truer to Krishnamurti's insistence that fanatical identification with religion is a source of violence than Upshaw's astonishing, possessed performance of "Ayre" on Sunday morning.

The intelligence, dimension and spirituality with which she infuses her performances on great international concert and opera stages has garnered Ms. Rivera unique artistic collaborations with many of today’s most celebrated composers, including John Adams, Osvaldo Golijov, Gabriela Lena Frank, Jonathan Leshnoff, Nico Muhly, and Paola Prestini, and has brought her together with such esteemed conductors as Gustavo Dudamel, Sir Simon Rattle, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Robert Spano, Markus Stenz, Bernard Haitink, and Michael Tilson Thomas. During the 2019-2020 season, Ms. Rivera returns to the Aspen Music Festival for an evening of Spanish art songs with guitarist Sharon Isbin. She performs Golijov’s La Pasión según San Marcos in her debut with the Minnesota Orchestra, led by María Guinand.     Robert Spano Music Director Endowed Robert Reid Topping Chair Robert Spano, conductor, pianist, composer and teacher, is known worldwide for the intensity of his artistry and distinctive communicative abilities, creating a sense of inclusion and warmth among musicians and audiences that is unique among American orchestras. Beginning his 20th season as Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and his first as Principal Guest Conductor of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, this imaginative conductor is an approachable artist with the innate ability to share his enthusiasm for music. An avid mentor to rising artists, he is responsible for nurturing the careers of numerous celebrated composers, conductors, and performers. As Music Director of the Aspen Music Festival and School since 2011, he oversees the programming of more than 300 events and educational programs for 630 students and young performers. Highlights of Spano’s 2020/21 season include conducting engagements with the Fort Worth, Houston and New World Symphonies, in addition to multiple programs with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Spano’s 2019/20 season included a return to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, conducting the world premiere of George Tsontakis’s Violin Concerto No. 3 alongside Vaughan Williams’s A Sea Symphony. He returned to the Indianapolis Symphony for a program of Higdon, Rodrigo and Sibelius, and led the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere of Dimitrios Skyllas’s Kyrie eleison, commissioned by the BBC. Conducting debuts included the Wroclaw Philharmonic.
