My Putting Bible
I want to start this book with a short explanation. Look closely at the title. Notice that I don t claim this to be "THE" putting bible. I call it Dave Pelz s Putting Bible because it truly is "my" bible on putting. It is a compendium of my research, my studies, my test results, my teaching philosophy, and my beliefs about the art and science of putting. It is my bible-or, if you prefer, my notebook or data log book-into which I have transcribed my thoughts, interpretations of test results, observations, and theoretical work that have been instrumental in forming my understanding of putting. It is also from this work that I draw my philosophy for leaching the putting game in the Dave Pelz Scoring Game Schools. My putting bible is a work in progress, because as I continue to study putting, which I do almost every day, I m sure I will learn more. The information you ll read here is what I ve learned so far. It started with my playing, thinking about, and studying my own game. I started playing golf when I was six. I played throughout my childhood, was the number-one player on my high-school teams, played in numerous local tour- naments, and had some minor success. I attended Indiana University on a four- year golf scholarship; more important, as it turned out, I also majored in physics. After college, I tried-unsuccessfully-to become a good enough player to make it on the PGA Tour back in the early 1960s. So I began a 15-year career at NASA, conducting research in space, launching satellites into earth orbit and beyond, and studying how the sun controls our atmosphere. Since then, having changed my focus from the stars to the little white ball, I have studied the performance techniques and results of many tour professionals and am- ateurs, golfers of all sizes and skill levels, whenever and wherever I find them. I also have studied thousands of putting greens, balls, the behavior of balls on those xi xii Introduction
greens, myriad putting implements, and many of the varied techniques of putting. I have filled most of my last 25 years measuring and trying to improve the teaching and learning techniques for putting and the short game. I have had some success improving the putting of my students, from beginners to Tour pros, all over the world. As I write this today, I am deeply involved in several continuing (and very ex- citing) research projects relating to how players can learn to putt and play better. Again, this is "my" research and "my Putting Bible." But I ve put it in a form to help you become a better putter.
I'm a Researcher
Several years ago, I founded the Pelz Golf Institute, which has as its mission "re- search for the good of the game." We chose that charter because it is a noble pur- pose and fits very nicely with what I m trying to do-help golfers of all handicap and skill levels play the game better and enjoy it more. This has become my life s work-and better work you could not find! But we also have taken this mission one step further: That is, we want to make the game simple enough to understand that everyone can "get it;" and, therefore, shoot lower scores and have more fun. To make teaching and learning the game this simple, we have to study it in depth. Luckily for me, that is something I dearly love to do. It s obvious to me now that all my previous experience-my years playing ju- nior, high school, and collegiate golf; my first career conducting space research at NASA s Goddard Space Flight Center (where my Indiana University book learning changed into real knowledge of how to conduct valid, scientific research); the in- depth studies I made of my own game; and my most recent work conducting re- search with the Pelz Golf Institute-were merely preparation for what I m doing now. It s taken me 54 years (since I first picked up a club at age six) to be ready to tell you, and show you, how you can improve your ability to sink putts while un- derstanding the game better and enjoying it more. As you ll soon learn, one of the keys to lower scores is better putting. And the better you learn to putt, the more you will enjoy the rest of the game.
Why This Book?
That s easy: I had to write this book because putting is so important. Further- more, besides being a researcher, I m also a teacher. Introduction xiii
But let me explain that I did not write my Putting Bible to change the concepts I wrote about in my previous book on putting, Putt Like the Pros. In fact, not much in PLTP has changed. But since writing that book more than 10 years ago, much has been learned. True, we re still using flat-faced sticks to strike a round ball and try to roll it into a 4 1/4-inch hole. But I ve learned a great deal in those 10 years about stroke techniques, greens, wind effects, green-reading, and practice technology. I ve also seen, learned, and tried teaching techniques that can signifi- cantly help your putting skills. The purpose of this book is to try to bring putting knowledge, understanding, and instruction to the next level. So why this book for you? Because too many golfers pick up a putter based on its looks and off they go. Is that you? If it is, and you already putt well, then it s okay. It s also perfectly fine if all you want to do is have fun watching the ball roll any which way. If, however, your idea of fun in golf is scoring well, putting well, and holing putts-and you don t putt well using your "natural" stroke-then you re in the right place. My Putting Bible is meant to help you understand putting well enough to make it simple (acquainting you with the realities of putting), to explain both what and how to improve your putting, and then help you actually learn to putt better. This is not your normal "how-to" instruction book. My Putting Bible is much more of a "what, why, and how-to" book. This means not only learning how to improve your stroke, but also understanding the mechanics of your putting stroke and what happens on the greens. That s why I ve followed a format of first ex- plaining what has to be learned and why you need to learn it (Chapters 1-9) be- fore getting into how you learn to improve your putting (Chapters 10-15). I hope you won t cheat and skip over the understanding and jump right to the instruction part of the book, because you ll only hurt yourself. I ve learned from many years of teaching that understanding what and how you need to learn makes learning much easier. And it helps to understand both the theoretical and practi- cal sides of golf s problems when you are struggling with your solutions. One of the goals of this book is to make you knowledgeable enough to become your own best teacher. To do this I must erase your belief in "old wives tales" (a process I hope I ve already begun), and clear up any misunderstandings about how you should practice. One more very important goal is to prove to you that putting can be simple, and that the better you putt, the simpler it gets. My friend Willie says it best: "Just start the ball on the right line and give it the right speed. You can understand that, can t you?" The mechanics that make a golfer a good putter will not stand up well if em- ployed in the full swing. Similarly, if you try to use a throttled-down power swing for your putting stroke, you will struggle on the greens. The motions don't cross over because their purposes are so different. The requirements of good putting are twofold: the accuracy of the initial line and the precision of rolling the ball at a specific speed, which, taken together, allow it to roll and curve gently into the hole. When putting, there is never the problem of achieving enough distance to carry a lake or creating enough power to get the ball to the hole. The requirements of a good drive or 2-iron swing are to hit the ball as far as possible within the constraints
