NEW YORKLAW SCHOOL l 12TH COMMENCEMENT~ MAY 16, 2004 I A Message from the Dean

Dear Members of the Class of 2004:

Graduation always stirs emotions: appreciation for the support of parents, family, and friends; elation while contemplating new jobs, unique opportunities, and becoming a lawyer; relief that finals are over; fear of the unknown and even the known (yes, I know there is a bar exam); and satisfaction in all that has been accomplished and all that will be accomplished in the years to come. But this year brings forth other emotions, specific to your class and your law school: the memories stirred by 9I11; the premature loss of some of your classmates; the pride we have in our school and its unique role in helping to rebuild our neighborhood; and our determination to lead meaningful, responsible, productive lives as lawyers in an ever-changing world.

To this list I must add my own response. I am proud of you, the Class of 2004. You showed true grit throughout your careers at New York Law School, have performed with great elan, showed grace under pressure, demonstrated your dedication to the law, and bonded like no other group ever before.

Law teachers often emphasize the intellectual over the emotional. Lawyers keep a professional distance from their clients. Classmates compete with each other, but rarely show their admiration and love. You are different. I salute you, the Class of 2004, who have cared deeply for each other, shown great emotional strength, and demonstrated wonderful character!

Sincerely,

Richard A. Matasar Dean and President

President's Medal of Honor and Honorary Degrees J. Bruce Llewellyn Chairman and CEO of Philadelphia Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Inc. PRESIDENT'S MEDAL OF HONOR

ntrepreneur. Public servant. Activist. Philanthropist. It's hard to know where to begin and there's certainly no end to describing the extraordinary work and E life of J. Bruce Llewellyn. He was born in Harlem of immigrant Jamaican parents who instilled in their son the determination to be a success in his personal and professional life. They achieved their goal, beyond anything they could have imagined. Mr. Llewellyn enlisted in the United States Army at the age of sixteen. By nineteen, he was company commander and at the age of twenty-one, he was a veteran. He returned to Harlem, enrolled in City College and opened a retail store which he operated while earning his B.A. degree. In the next several years, he earned aJ.D. degree from New York Law School, an M.B.A. from Columbia University, and a degree in public administration from New York University. Ten honorary degrees would be added to this distinguished collection in the years to come. During the 1960s, Mr. Llewellyn dedicated himself to government and public service. He advanced from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office to become regional director of the U.S. Small Business Administration, and he ended the decade by serving as deputy commissioner of housing for the City of New York. In 1969, Mr. Llewellyn bought Fedco Foods Corporation, a small supermarket chain in the South Bronx. By 1984, it had become the nation's largest minority-owned retail business with twenty-nine supermarkets, nine hundred employees, and annual gross revenues of $100 million. Mr. Llewellyn went on to purchase the Philadelphia Coca-Cola Bottling Company, and then acquired the Wilmington, Delaware, Coca-Cola bottling operations. He was the principal stockholder and chairman of the ABC network affiliate in Buffalo and served as chairman of Garden State Cablevision, in which he was a major stockholder. He certainly fulfilled his parents' dream of being successful in his chosen career. But there was a second part to that dream-that Mr. Llewellyn would be a person who served his country and his community, and in that too, he excelled. At the peak of the civil rights movement in the early 1960s, Mr. Llewellyn founded the original chapter of 100 Black Men. Today there are more than ninety-five chapters throughout the United States, all composed of committed leaders working for positive change in their communities. Mr. Llewellyn has served two U.S. presidents. In 1977, President Carter appointed him president of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC). He served as Ambassador at Large until 1981. Later, President Clinton appointed him chairman of the United States Small Business Administration Advisory Council. J. Bruce Llewellyn has distinguished himself as an extraordinary leader and a dedicated servant to the cause of human rights everywhere. We are proud to claim him as one of New York Law School's most illustrious alumni as we today confer upon him the highest honor our school bestows-the New York Law School President's Medal of Honor.

30 J NEW YORK LAw SCHOOL 112TH COMMENCEMENT~ MAY 16, 2004 HONORARY DEGREE CITATION Anthony Lewis Pulitzer Prize- Winning journalist and Author Doctor of Laws

oday, New York Law School proudly honors journalist and scholar Anthony Lewis for his dedication to the principles of a free and vigorous press, his T contributions to the field of constitutional law, and his commitment to civil liberties. As New York Law School Professor Nadine Strossen said, "Generations of readers and students know about the history of the Supreme Court and civil liberties because of Anthony Lewis's columns. He created a beat and used his column to stress the power of the courts and the media to bring about change." Mr. Lewis was born and raised in New York City. He graduated from Harvard College in 1948 and went to work for the Sunday Department of . In 1952 he became a general assignment reporter for the Washington Daily News and in 1955, he was awarded his first Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. The Pulitzer Committee cited his series of articles on the federal government's loyalty program that helped to exonerate a Navy employee of unjust charges that he was a security risk. In 1955, Mr. Lewis joined the Washington Bureau of the Times, and in 1963 he was awarded his second Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Supreme Court and, in particular, of the Court's groundbreaking decisions on legislative reapportionment. In 1965, Mr. Lewis accepted the position of chief of the Times's London Bureau and in 1969, his column, "Abroad at Home," appeared for what would be a thirty-two-year commentary on national and international affairs. In addition to his many columns and articles on legal subjects, Mr. Lewis is the author of three books that illuminate the workings of the law in this country: Gideon's Trumpet, about the landmark Supreme Court case giving impoverished criminal defendants the right to an attorney; Portrait of a Decade, about the great changes in American race relations; and Make No Law, about the New York Times v. Sullivan case, the landmark Supreme Court decision which changed the course of First Amendment litigation in America. Mr. Lewis was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard and is the recipient of a number of awards and honorary degrees. He spent fifteen years as a lecturer at Harvard Law School and, since 1983, he has been the James Madison Visiting Professor of First Amendment Issues at the Columbia University School ofJournalism. In 2002, he was named Visiting Lombard Lecturer at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. In a career of more than fifty years, Mr. Lewis has explained and clarified the law, the Constitution, and the Supreme Court to generations of Americans. He has been an eloquent defender of the First Amendment and an impassioned champion of civil liberties for all. Most of all, in the best tradition of American journalism, he has challenged us to think, to question and to respect our nation's commitment to the rule of law. It is for all of these reasons that New York Law School honors Anthony Lewis.

NEwYoRK LAw SCHOOL 112TH COMMENCEMENT~ MAY 16, 2004 I 31 HONORARY DEGREE CITATION The Honorable Alexis M. Herman Former United States Secretary of Labor Doctor of Laws

exis Herman was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. From her mother, a choolteacher, she inherited the ability to motivate people; from her father, a usinessman, activist, and elected politician, she learned to fight for what she believes in; and from her grandmother, she learned to "bloom where you are planted." And bloom she did! From the very beginning of her working life, Ms. Herman was a champion of the underserved and the underrepresented. Her first job was with Catholic Charities, training unemployed young people to work in the Pascagoula shipyard in Mississippi. At the age of twenty-nine, she joined the Carter Administration as the director of the Women's Bureau at the U.S. Department of Labor-the youngest person ever to hold that position. In the 1980s, she became a successful entrepreneur and labor market expert, guiding corporations and local municipalities on training, mentoring, and job creation. Ms. Herman was chief executive officer of the 1992 Democratic National Convention Committee and served as deputy director for the Presidential Transition Office. In 1993, President Clinton appointed her assistant to the president and director of the White House Public Liaison Office. Four years later, the President nominated Ms. Herman to serve as the nation's Secretary of Labor, describing her as a leader who "understands the needs of workers, and understands the challenges they face as we approach the twenty-first century." Less than three months later, she successfully facilitated negotiations between UPS management and Teamsters Union leaders, ending a ten-day strike that threatened to disrupt the American economy. Under Secretary Herman's stewardship, the Labor Department significantly contributed to an unprecedented period of prosperity. Unemployment reached a thirty-year record low in May 2000, and groups that had too often been left behind, particularly African Americans and Hispanics, also experienced record lows in unemployment. Currently, as chair and chief executive officer of New Ventures, Inc., Ms. Herman continues to lend her expertise and talent to a vast array of corporate enterprises and nonprofit organizations. A recipient of more than twenty honorary degrees from major colleges and universities around the country, she serves on the Board of her alma mater, Xavier University of Louisiana. She is the chairwoman ofThe Coca-Cola Company's Diversity Task Force and chair of the Toyota Diversity Advisory Board, still working and advocating for full rights for working people everywhere. Alexis Herman, it is for your unceasing and unflagging efforts on behalf of America's workers, and for your commitment to the cause of equality and equity among all Americans, that New York Law School honors you today.
