Proceeds from this luncheon benefit a cancer research clinic focused on identification and early detection of BRCA gene mutations in women at Israel’s Rabin Medical Center—home to the Davidoff Cancer Center—a world class facility whose sole focus is on the treatment and prevention of cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer afflicting Jewish women in the United States and Israel. Throughout their lifetimes, one in eight Jewish women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Genetic mutations in the BRCA genes cause breast cancer and are known to be more prevalent among Ashkenazi women. With each passing year, more women diagnosed with breast cancer are surviving. This can be attributed in part to a number of factors: improved primary care at diagnosis, enhanced treatment facilities, advances in radiation equipment, and above all, early detection. -

Man In A Hat: Martin Balsam and the Refining of Male Character Acting in American Films, 1957-1976 John Thomas McGuire, Siena College [email protected] Volume 8. 1 (2020) | ISSN 2158-8724 (online) | DOI 10.5195/cinej.2020.235 | http://cinej.pitt.edu Abstract This article attempts a definition at what constitutes “character acting” in mainstream cinema in the United States and argues that throughout the peak of his film career—roughly, 1957 through 1976--Martin Balsam refined the definition of male character acting in American film, a parameter previously established by such skilled practitioners as Eugene Pallette and Claude Rains. Balsam did this through his ability to portray what can be termed “a man in a hat” portrayals: tartly humorous, reliable, and sometimes authoritative supporting characters, usually wearing a chapeau. This is clearly seen in such performances as the private investigator in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960) and most interestingly, a partner in an unusual subway hijacking in Joseph Sargent’s The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three (1974). This could be one of those California "It's The Cheese" commercials. Except those commercials don't normally focus on cow shit. We do. TILT DOWN to a fat, round PATTY drying olive drab in the sun. Flies buzz. Peaceful and quiet. until ••• ZOOOM! WHEELS plow right through the shit with a SPLAT. NEW ANGLE - AN RV Is speeding smack-dab through the pasture, no road in sight. A bit out of place, to say the least. It's an old 70's era Winnebago with chalky white paint and Bondo spots. A bumper sticker for the Good Sam Club is stuck to the back. The Winnebago galumphs across the landscape, scattering cows. It catches a wheel and sprays a rooster tail of red dirt. INT. WINNEBAGO - DAY Inside, the DRIVER's knuckles cling white to the wheel. He's got the pedal flat. Scared, breathing fast. His eyes bug wide behind the faceplate of his gas mask. Oh, by the way, he's wearing a GAS MASK. That, and white jockey UNDERPANTS. Nothing else. Buckled in the seat beside him lolls a clothed PASSENGER, also wearing a gas mask. Blood streaks down from his ear, blotting his T-shirt. He's passed out cold. Behind them, the interior is a wreck. Beakers and buckets and flasks -- some kind of ad-hoc CHEMICAL LAB -- spill their noxious contents with every bump we hit. -

Following on the heels of Making a Murderer’s controversial “confession” scenes, Netflix is running a new original series exploring the dangers of possibly false confessions called The Confession Tapes. The first two episodes prominently feature a controversial police procedure known as “Mr. Big.”. What is Mr. Big? How do Mr. Big stings work? What’s the history of them? (Warning: There are plot spoilers ahead). First the background on Mr. Big and The Confession Tapes on Netflix. The first two episodes of the seven-part Netflix series focus on the convictions of two friends, Sebastian Burns and Atif Rafay, for the murders of Rafay’s father, mother, and sister in 1994 in Washington State when they were 18. Burns and Rafay were convicted in King County in large part, according to the show, because of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police use of the “Mr. Big” technique on them (they had gone to Canada after the murders.) Unlike Making a Murderer, The Confession Tapes then switches to other cases for the remaining episodes of season 1, which just began streaming on Netflix. According to The Globe and Mail, “Research suggests false confessions are involved in roughly a quarter of all wrongful convictions. Honesty Without Truth: Lies, Accuracy, and the Criminal Justice Process
HONESTY WITHOUT TRUTH: LIES, ACCURACY, AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS Lisa Kern Griffin† Focusing on “lying” is a natural response to uncertainty but too narrow of a concern. Honesty and truth are not the same thing and conflating them can actually inhibit accuracy. In several settings across investigations and trials, the criminal justice system elevates compliant statements, misguided beliefs, and confident opinions while excluding more complex evidence. Error often results. Some interrogation techniques, for example, privilege cooperation over information. Those interactions can yield incomplete or false statements, confessions, and even guilty pleas. Because of the impeachment rules that purportedly prevent perjury, the most knowledgeable witnesses may be precluded from taking the stand. The current construction of the Confrontation Clause right also excludes some reliable evidence—especially from victim witnesses—because it favors face-to-face conflict even though overrated demeanor cues can mislead. And courts permit testimony from forensic experts about pattern matches, such as bite-marks and ballistics, if those witnesses find their own methodologies persuasive despite recent studies discrediting their techniques. Exploring the points of disconnect between honesty and truth exposes some flaws in the criminal justice process and some opportunities to advance fact-finding, truth-seeking, and accuracy instead. At a time when “post-truth” challenges to shared baselines beyond the courtroom grow more pressing, scaffolding legal institutions, so they can provide needed structure and helpful models, seems particularly important. Assessing the legitimacy of legal outcomes and fostering the engagement necessary to reach just conclusions despite adversarial positions could also have an impact on declining facts and decaying trust in broader public life.
