C O M I N G 2 Leer from Director Spring Greengs Friends! It’s just a wonderful feeling to know that we are now officially on our way to warmer weather! It seems like it has been a long and cold year and this spring seems a lile more welcome than usual this year. J I hope that you have taken the opportunity to go by our new senior center on Patrick Avenue. WOW! This place is really coming along nicely. The light, the openness, the commercial kitchen… The list goes on and on! It’s going to be a wonderful place for our Champaign County seniors to gather and enjoy the company of friends and the space to enjoy all the acvies that will be happening! We are planning a “so opening” for the new center that will be just for our UCCSC members. At this point, we don’t have an exact date, but most likely someme in June. We will be sending out invitaons for you to be able to visit the new center and take a tour before the actual grand opening ceremony that we are planning for a later date. As we begin this journey to our new home, it doesn’t escape me that this wonderful non-profit organizaon that began 50 YEARS ago (50 years!!!!) is now going to serve even more deserving people within our community. Looking back over the history of our center, the main purpose has always been and will connue to be service. We will be able offer more services for our seniors in need as well as addional programs, acvies and learning opportunies for all. You’ll be able to meet a friend at the center, grab a cup of coffee and actually be able to sit down and have a conversaon. Or, maybe a card game. The new center will be a great addion in so many ways! If any of you are interested, we are inving you to be a part of our “donor board” that will be located inside the center. We have been very careful and cauous with the funding that our community has provided for not only our new center, but our operaonal expenses as well. The monies that are donated to the donor board would go towards outdoor equipment, Outreach shelving and carts, outdoor furniture, fitness equipment, etc. These are all addional fees that are not included in the building cost. The UCCSC member donor board will be set up as follows: Donaon Category $50 Bronze $100 Silver $250 Gold $500+ Planum Your name or the name of your choice will go on this board. It’s a nice way to add a personal touch to our new building in a small way. Please feel free to contact the center if you have any quesons regarding the donor board. On an added note, Ronda is doing much beer and is recovering at home. J She is set up comfortably with her laptop and she is currently working from home. She stopped in the other day and she looks wonderful!! It will be nice to have her back full me. Huge thanks to Brenda Minnifield who’s really stepped up since Ronda’s accident. We are now in the home stretch, friends. It won’t be long now! We’ll be able to see each other and finally get together. Oh my goodness...we have sure missed you!!! Please connue to take care of yourselves and each other. Stacy Hello Everyone! As many of you know I was in a bit of a freak accident and broke my femur and hip. I am on the mend and doing very well. Chapter 7 Community Cultural Development as a Site of Joy, Struggle, and Transformation Dudley Cocke Introduction This chapter reports the search by a rural, professional theater company, never numbering more than a dozen members, for a cultural development paradigm that utilizes the inherent intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and material traditions and features of a community to encourage individual agency in support of community well-being. Based on its theatrical experiments, Roadside Theater eventually would claim that by sharing (performing) and examining one’s personal story in public settings marked by manifold perspectives, not only can one learn to speak for one self from the depth of one’s own experience, but one can learn to act in concert with others to achieve what is fair and just for the whole in which one resides. This assertion would be decades in gestation as the theater company’s artists and producers learned from hundreds of communities in its home region of Appalachia and across the United States. If community cultural development (CCD) means developing the intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and material traditions and features of a community, then CCD has been the core of Roadside Theater’s effort since its inception 40 years ago. Beginning its work in its own backyard, Roadside eventually—for ideological, aesthetic, and economic reasons—turned 1 its attention to helping communities beyond its Appalachian homeland develop their inherent artistic assets as a means of celebrating local life, of wrestling with community

  • Camp TV: Trans Gender Queer Sitcom History by Quinlan Miller
Reviewed by Ken Feil Camp TV: Trans Gender Queer Sitcom History by Quinlan Miller. Duke University Press. 2019. 232 pages. $99.95 hardcover; $25.95 paper; also available in e-book. In Camp TV: Trans Gender Queer Sitcom History, Quinlan Miller presents a revelatory historical reassessment of the US network sitcom of the 1950s and 1960s in addition to rethinking camp, an ironic performance and reception sensibility usually associated with white, gay male culture. Arguing that non- binary gender is a constitutive element of both camp and situation comedy formulas, Miller disputes the assumptions of both television history and camp studies with meticulous research spanning institutional procedures, social- historical context, and textual features. The subject of camp remains marginal in television studies, as W. D. Phillips and Isabel Pinedo recently observed, despite holding a pivotal position in television history.1 Genealogies of cult TV, furthermore, have rendered camp either invisible or hovering in the fringes.2 Miller confirms the centrality of camp to television aesthetics at the same time as they challenge the typical historical narrative of camp TV, which begins in the 1960s with the iconic network series Batman (ABC, 1966– 1968) and the burgeoning mainstream currency of “camp” sensibility generated by 1 W. D. Phillips and Isabel Pinedo, “Gilligan and Captain Kirk Have More in Common Than You Think: 1960s Camp TV as an Alternative Genealogy for Cult TV,” Journal of Popular Television 6, no. 1 (2018): 23– 27, https://doi.org/10.1386/jptv.6.1.19_1. 2 Phillips and Pinedo, “Gilligan and Captain Kirk,” 21– 23; Philippe Le Guern, “Toward a Constructivist Approach to Media Cults,” in Cult Television, ed.

BROADWAY MUSICALS: RECENT PRESERVATIONS OF MUSICALS ON THE CONCERT STAGE AND IN THE STUDIO By James Fisher In 1985, RCA record producer Thomas Z. Shepard assembled an extraordinary cast of Broadway luminaries for two special performances of Stephen Sondheim's 1971 musical, Follies, which previously was represented in recordings by only an original cast album which eliminated, or significantly abbreviated, much of the score. Shepard's recording (RCA Red Seal, RCD2-7128) features virtually the entire score of the show, with snatches of dialogue, as recorded in concert before two enthusiastic audiences at Lincoln Center. In 1988, conductor John McGlinn's restored, complete (including a lengthy appendix of songs added to later versions of the show) studio recording (EMI, CDS 7 49108 2) of Jerome Kern's and Oscar Hammerstein's classic 1927 Broadway musical play, Show Boat, was released to widespread critical acclaim. The much recorded Show Boat had never before been captured in its entirety, and previous versions featured so many interpolations, omissions, or "updated" orchestrations that the simple beauty of Kern's score was often obscured. The success of these two otherwise unrelated recordings contributed to a revival of a nearly lost art-the studio recording of Broadway musicals with a cast and orchestra assembled not for any particular production, but for the sole purpose of preserving the score. The unexpected and extraordinary commercial success of the Follies and Show Boat recordings renewed interest in studio revivals of musicals leading to a flood of revisits to earlier works of the musical stage, while inspiring experimentation with the ways in which these recordings may present most successfully the score.

This series of word puzzles challenges your knowledge about the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community; while at the same time being entertaining and educational. Some clues are easy, some are difficult, and all are fun. Queer Pop Culture Word Games contains 22 Crossword puzzles, 8 Quote Falls, and 7 Anagram puzzles for a total of 37 puzzles in all. These puzzles are focused more at lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender pop culture. For example, do you remember the Hanky Code? or can you name 10 films that featured lesbian themes? The puzzles that list famous actors, singers, and sports personalities are always a big hit with the younger, curious crowd. Bondage, S&M, sexual practices of insects, and masturbation are some of the topics also used to make fun puzzles. And, to be on top of pop culture, current TV shows that appeal to lesbians and gays have been used. Every puzzle has a different theme with no repetition of material. Queer History and Politics Word Games is aimed to be fun and informational. Nineteen short essays, not exceeding 500 words, have been written with words to be searched or unscrambled through either a Word Find Puzzle, Anagram with Word Find Puzzle, or Word Search Puzzles. In addition, there are 10 Crossword Puzzles, 9 Quote Falls, and 1 Anagram Puzzle for a total of 39 puzzles in the book.
