GARTER KNIGHTS - PAGE 8 ASSOCIATION OF PROFESSIONAL TOURIST GUIDES www.guidelondon.org.uk August 2019 Union news LETTER FROM THE CHAIR It is peak season and busier than ever. There are lots of opportunities for members to work with agencies chasing experienced qualified guides. Many tired guides look over their packed diaries and forward to their next day off, often weeks away. Amongst this are updates of changes to sites with restrictions imposed as popular venues seek to manage their ever increasing visitor numbers. London is thriving as a visitor attraction with world class cuisine, accessible heritage and accommodation available for every budget. Crowd management is a crucial part of the visitor experience. BBTGs can be seen as part of that mix. Whilst tour managing in Europe I have been struck by how much European guides help to actively manage the crowds. In Versailles our guide chivvied those blocking doorways. At Dachau the guide politely challenged other visitors taking inappropriate selfies. Whilst we are employed to look after our own clients on the day, our long term relationship is with every historic site. We should aim to be part of their crowd management solution, helping visitor flow and enjoyment - and not just for those clients who are with us. Becoming part of the virtual site team for our visit, keeping the queue moving and telling happy snappers when photography is not permitted will all endear us to site staff. After all, our guiding access is a privilege and not a right and, like every relationship, it needs constant care and attention. Elsewhere in this issue you will see details of our Thirtieth Anniversary Party on 17 October (pages one and three). It will be a grand affair and a chance to dress up and enjoy the company of the finest blue badge guides in London. We will honour those who established APTG thirty years ago and made guiding a viable, paid-for profession and not just something for hobbyists and the retired. We have an entertaining after dinner speaker plus dancing to some carefully curated sounds. Please book your places early for a memorable evening. Lastly, following a harrowing examination process by the most exacting assessors, I have recently learned that I passed my City of London Guiding Course. We should never stop learning and our Autumn CPD programme will soon be announced. We are including a wide range of refresher sessions with some ‘virtual tours’ using images and the Unite meeting room. We will be offering training on sleep management too, so tired Guides can learn how to best recover overnight. It is just another way of celebrating thirty years of the Assoxiation of Professional Tourist Guides. Best wishes, Nick Hancock.
