Racing Backs Mccoy for Sports Personality Winner Submitted By: Easyodds.Com Monday, 6 December 2010 Racing backs McCoy for Sports Personality Winner Submitted by: Easyodds.com Monday, 6 December 2010 Legendary jumps jockey Tony McCoy is odds-on favourite to be the 2010 BBC Sports Personality winner (http://www.easyodds.com/sports-betting/tv-and-awards-betting/awards/bbc-sports-personality.html) as the world of racing rallies behind one of their all-time greats. McCoy, who won his first ever Grand National this year on Don’t Push It, has seen the great and good of the sport come out and back his campaign – while a Facebook group called ‘Make Tony McCoy Sports Personality of the Year’ is 10,000 strong already. www.easyodds.com show Sports Personality odds (http://www.easyodds.com/sports-betting/tv-and-awards-betting/awards/bbc-sports-personality/outright.html) on McCoy were cut as soon as the 10-man shortlist was announced – even though we have never previously seen a Sports Personality winner from the world of racing. He is also looking to become the first North Irish champion since Mary Peters in 1972. However, the Sports Personality of the Year 2010 awards won’t be the first time that ‘AP’ has been in attendance – he also came third in 2002, behind David Beckham and Paula Radcliffe. However, McCoy may be scuppered by his own greatness. Having been Champion Jockey for the last 15 consecutive years, he accomplishes super-human feats every year - if he hasn’t won it by now then why should he win it this time around? This is the dilemma that McCoy supporters must solve if their man is to make Sports Personality history. While Sports Personality betting is dominated by McCoy, there are still 9 other contenders that stand in his way. Graeme McDowell is next in the market, after his stunning year which included winning the US Open and being a key member of Europe’s victorious Ryder Cup team. Also in the mix is darting legend Phil Taylor, who won his 13th World Championship in 2010, though no-one from the world of darts has ever won the award. One outsider well worth considering looks to be Jessica Ennis, who had a sensational year by winning gold in both the European and World Indoor Championships. Historically, a lot of previous Sports Personality winners have been athletes, while seven previous champions had won a European title in the same year. Be sure to keep up to date with all the latest Sports Personality of the Year betting developments at easyodds.com (http://www.easyodds.com/sports-betting/tv-and-awards-betting/awards/bbc-sports-personality/outright.html). • A Window of Opportunity? Preliminary Thoughts on Women’S Sport in Post- War Britain
A Window of Opportunity? Preliminary Thoughts on Women’s Sport in Post- war Britain Joyce Kay University of Stirling On 6 May 1954, in a specially staged and filmed event, Roger Bannister became the first athlete to run a mile in less than four minutes, with the help of ‘pacemakers’. Three weeks later, in a genuine race at the Midland Women’s AAA championships, Diane Leather became the first woman to run the same distance in under five minutes, without pacemaking assistance and without any of the subsequent kudos, hyperbole and world-wide acclaim. Bannister, now Sir Roger, became a sporting legend and the subject of a 150-page special issue of Sport in History in which every conceivable aspect of his feat – its cultural and historical significance, the notion of the record, and issues of image, scientific training and the use of drugs – was dissected and discussed by eight men…and one woman. [1] Who recalls Leather? When current Olympic swimming champion Rebecca Adlington and her team mate Joanne Jackson both swam inside the world record time during the same race in March 2009, they were the first British women to achieve this double since 1956. Adlington had become an instant heroine of sport after her double gold medal triumph in 2008, was voted into third place behind triple Olympic gold medallist Chris Hoy in that year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year contest and was awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours list. [2] Yet the record breakers of 1956, Olympic gold and bronze medallists Judy Grinham and Margaret Edwards, are scarcely remembered today in spite of subsequent impressive careers and press acclaim at the time: The Times, for example, had hailed ‘Miss Grinham’s Back-stroke Triumph’ when she won gold in Melbourne.
