The R101 Airship in Shortstown The R101 Airship in Shortstown The R101 was a famous airship that was built in the Cardington Sheds, Shortstown is (the giant hangars), in 1929 by named after the Short workers who lived in Shortstown. Brothers who built airships in Bedford from 1916. The Government The R101 took over the running of airships just was part of the three years later, but the name stuck. Imperial Airship Scheme, a government plan for airships to fly from Bedford taking travellers all around the world. Airships are filled with a gas that is lighter than air which makes them float, like a boat floats on water. The R101 used hydrogen which is very light but highly flammable. After a few test flights, engineers decided the R101 wasn’t lifting very well and decided to extend the ship. This made it the world’s longest flying aircraft at the time. The R101 had a sister ship called The sad end of the R101 Airship the R100 which flew successfully The R101 was supposed to fly to India in September 1930 but high to Canada winds delayed the flight. After pressure from officials to fly the ship, from the R101 eventually took off from Cardington on 4th October 1930 Cardington on and started its flight to Karachi. However, winds were still bad and 29th July 1930. not all pre-flight tests had been completed... On 5th October the airship crashed in Beauvais, France, bursting into flames shortly after hitting the ground. Sadly 48 of the 54 people on board lost their lives. The crash was a national tragedy. Those who lost their lives were laid in state at Westminster, London before being brought to Cardington to be buried. There is a memorial in Cardington in the cemetery of St Mary’s Church. The government decided not to continue with the Imperial Airship Scheme and dismantled the R100 airship, selling it for scrap. .

This file looks at the history of military and civilian balloons and airships, in Lincolnshire and elsewhere, and how those balloons developed from a smoke filled bag to the high-tech hybrid airship of today. This file could not have been created without the help and guidance of a number of organisations and subject matter experts. Three individuals undoubtedly deserve special mention: Mr Mike Credland and Mr Mike Hodgson who have both contributed information and images for you, the visitor to enjoy. Last, but certainly not least, is Mr Brian J. Turpin whose enduring support has added flesh to what were the bare bones of the story we are endeavouring to tell. • 1 Surbiton Cemetery and the R38 Airship Disaster. The
SURBITON CEMETERY AND THE R38 AIRSHIP DISASTER. THE GRAVE OF JOHN ROBERT PANNELLAND HIS WIFE GERTRUDE. David A Kennedy, PhD 3 September 2020 ABSTRACT The grave of John Robert and Gertrude Pannell is in Surbiton Cemetery [Section IV, Grave 58]. John Robert Pannell was a distinguished engineering scientist who carried out research in airships at the National Physical Laboratory and during the flights of airships under development. He was killed in the R38 airship disaster on 24 August 1921. The cause of this disaster and the eventual abandonment in the UK of commercial airships is discussed in the paper. Gertrude Pannell, a nurse by profession, was once the proprietor of Chiswick Nursing Home. She died in 1927. Their gravestone is a granite monolith on which is carved an anchor which probably symbolises the steadfastness of their relationship and the hope that they would meet again after death. INTRODUCTION Just before the chapel in Surbiton Cemetery on the right hand side is the grave of John Robert and Gertrude Pannell. It can be more precisely located as Section IV, Grave 58.1 Moreover it is marked with a large grey roughly- hewn granite monolith on which is carved an anchor with an entwined length of rope – see Figure 1. Who were John Robert and Gertrude Pannell, what can be discovered about the airship disaster on 24 August 1921 and what is the significance of the anchor carved on their gravestone? JOHN ROBERT PANNELL He was born on 8 August 1885, the son of Frederick Pannell and Emily Sarah Pannell. In the Census of 1891, Frederick Pannell was a manufacturer of leather goods, aged 46, who lived with his wife and son at 131 Holborn, Middlesex.
