Drawing on questionnaires completed by mothers across the UK, this MOTHERS ON MOTHERS book sheds new light on the varied and diverse ways in which expectant, new MATERNAL READINGS OF POPULAR TELEVISION and existing mothers make sense of popular representations of motherhood on television. She had numerous relationships with men and had 3 more children, Robbie Jackson, in 1978 by a man named Gary Bolton, Sonia Jackson in 1985 by a man called Terry Cant, and Billie Jackson in 1988 with Alan Jackson, whom she settled down with and married. 1993-1999. Carol's is a feisty, loud and strong character, who is fiercely protective of her children. She arrived in Albert Square in 1993, as a worker in the launderette. She soon moves to Albert Square with her partner Alan, and her four children: Bianca, Robbie, Sonia and Bille. In January 1994, Carol is shocked to see that David has moved back to Walford, and is also living in Albert Square with his mother Pat Butcher, stepfather Frank Butcher and stepsiblings Ricky and Janine Butcher.

    1 Culture and identity Introduction Is there anybody else exactly like you? You’ll probably answer ‘no’. We like to think of ourselves as individuals and to see ourselves as unique. Sociology does not deny this individuality. It does not claim that everybody is the same. However, it does argue that many of us have certain things in common. For example, members of a particular society usually share the same language. In this respect, we are not unique. Most people live in social groups – in families, communities and nations – rather than as isolated individuals. As the poet John Donne said, ‘No man is an island’ (nowadays he would say that goes for women too). In other words, we are constantly coming into contact with other people. We are affected by them, we develop bonds with them. Indeed, we only become fully ‘human’ by participating in society. Sociology has sometimes been described as the study of people in social groups. In this chapter we shall explore the fascinating story of how individuals are not isolated ‘islands’ but active Unique individuals with many things in common members of society.We shall see how we learn certain values and ways of behaving, and how our membership of social groups gives meaning to our lives and shapes our identities. Sociologists do not always agree on how and why things happen. But they help us to see more clearly how we are both ‘individuals’ and members of ‘society’.
