Historia received a record number of submissions this AND THE year, leading to difficult decisions in what proved to be an arduous EASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY selection process. These papers represent some of the very best DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY student writing of the past year. The selection process was long and difficult. Every editor read all sixty five submissions and voted on every paper. The process, VOLUME 15 (2006) although long, helped to ensure that the best papers were selected. This year we had a wide range of selections, including papers on the Irish Famine and the Irish Rebellion; theories of slavery in the United Editors: States, including the idea of paternalism and an analysis of the slave clause during the Constitutional Convention; constitutional issues, Matthew Burke including in Britain with both the problem of the abdication of Margaret Hawkins Edward VIII and the abolition of capital punishment, and the issue of Ashley Tomlinson eugenics in the United States during the early twentieth century; the problem of war atrocities during World War II, including the practice Editorial Board: of Nazism and the issue of the Korean comfort women in Japan. Also included in this year’s Historia are an analysis of the lack of action by Paul Apodaca the United States during the Rwandan genocide and a student Robyn Carswell movement in Tlatelolco, Mexico; an examination of the shift from Caroline Deters cotton to wool underwear in Britain; the role of the Cherokee in the David Dvorak Civil War; the relationships between women and food on the Overland Chris Morrison Trail; and the influence of Machiavelli on Ivan IV. We are particularly grateful to Dr. Walter L. Arnstein, Professor Emeritus of History at Cassandra Murray the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, for allowing us to Margaret Rohman print his plenary talk at the Regional Conference of Phi Alpha Theta, which was held this year At Eastern Illinois University. Terrell, Dean of the Robert B. Toulouse School of Graduate Studies Caernarven-Smith, Patricia. Gladstone and the Bank of England: A Study in Mid- Victorian Finance, 1833-1866. Master of Arts (History), May 2007, 378 pp., 11 tables, bibliography, 275 titles. The topic of this thesis is the confrontations between William Gladstone and the Bank of England. These confrontations have remained a mystery to authors who noted them, but have generally been ignored by others. This thesis demonstrates that Gladstone’s measures taken against the Bank were reasonable, intelligent, and important for the development of nineteenth-century British government finance. To accomplish this task, this thesis refutes the opinions of three twentieth-century authors who have claimed that many of Gladstone’s measures, as well as his reading, were irrational, ridiculous, and impolitic. My primary sources include the Gladstone Diaries, with special attention to a little-used source, Volume 14, the indexes to the Diaries. The day-to-day Diaries and the indexes show how much Gladstone read about financial matters, and suggest that his actions were based to a large extent upon his reading. In addition, I have used Hansard’s Parliamentary Debates and nineteenth-century periodicals and books on banking and finance to understand the political and economic debates of the time.

Lewis PAGES: 80 The thesis asks whether Kim, as a fin de siècle novel, helped to bridge the Victorian and Modern periods in British literature, and whether the novel, published at the midpoint of Kipling’s career, stands as a marker of his literary development. This thesis contends that Kim holds significance as both a personal and a national narrative. Each chapter explores a specific aspect of Kim: the text itself, its author, and the historical milieu in which it was composed. My theoretical roots, as detailed in the opening chapter, are in the works of Mikhail Bakhtin and his concept of “novelness,” or the warring centrifugal and centripetal forces that constantly work against each other but ultimately hold the text together. My interpretation of Kim identifies the theme of childhood as the centripetal force and the theme of empire as the centrifugal force. These opposing currents move Kipling forward in his literary life. As he puts the demons of his childhood definitively behind him and offers his final word on India, he uncovers a new thematic source of conflict in his now-complicated belief in the infallibility of the British Empire, a result of his experience in South Africa during the Boer War.

Though untainted by knowledge of future greatness, the admiring author predicted that Churchill would become prime minister. 1907 Leech, H. J. Mr. Winston Churchill. Manchester: Abel Heywood. Churchill was “deselected” as Member of Parliament for Oldham after he defied its Conservative majority by becoming a Liberal in 1904. Denied the Tory nomination in Oldham for the general election of January 1905, he was invited to stand as a Liberal for North West Manchester, one of nine Manchester seats, with a tiny electorate of 10,000, a third of whom were Jewish. Churchill spoke strongly for Free Trade, popular in Manchester’s mill industries, and was duly elected. 1909 Batchelor, H. Crouch, compiler. An attack book by a Conservative critic of Churchill’s early career as a Tory before he “crossed the floor” to the Liberals in 1904, dwells on Churchill’s earlier critiques of the party he now spoke for.

    Disraeli and Gladstone: Opposing Forces By Robert Blake Disraeli and Gladstone were both politicians of extraordinary ability - but their personalities clashed and they heartily loathed each other. Robert Blake, the British constitutional historian, compares their political careers, and charts their stormy relationship. Mutual dislike In the general election of 1 April 1880, the Conservative party under Benjamin Disraeli was crushingly defeated by the Liberals (known as Whigs) - under William Gladstone. Lord Granville, a moderate Whig, wrote to Queen Victoria who would, he knew, be bitterly disappointed by the decision of the electorate: 'Lord Beaconsfield [Disraeli] and Mr Gladstone are men of extraordinary ability; they dislike each other more than is usual among public men. Of no other politician Lord Beaconsfield would have said in public that his conduct was worse than those who had committed the Bulgarian atrocities. He has the power of saying in two words that which drives a person of Mr Gladstone's peculiar temperament into a state of great excitement.' There is no doubt that the two statesmen hated each other. There is no doubt that the two statesmen hated each other. Disraeli referred to his rival in a letter to Lord Derby as '...that unprincipled maniac Gladstone - extraordinary mixture of envy, vindictiveness, hypocrisy and superstition'. And Gladstone more moderately said of his old enemy, 'the Tory party had principles by which it would and did stand for bad and for good. All this Dizzy destroyed'. When Lord Granville wrote to Queen Victoria, Disraeli, born in 1804, had one more year to live; Gladstone, who was born in 1810, had another eighteen.

  • The Corn Laws
    The Corn Laws After the end of the Napoleonic Wars it was feared that cheap foreign grain would flood the British market and that domestic producers would suffer financially. The first of the Corn Laws was introduced by the British Government in 1815 to protect domestic landowners and farmers from this threat. The high tariffs imposed made it too expensive to import grain, even when domestic supplies were in short supply. The price of bread increased and rioting was not uncommon. Eventually, despite strong opposition from his own party, Conservative Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel successfully repealed the law in 1846. On display here is a selection of documents relating to the Corn Laws, including a political cartoon and election broadsheets (the topic featured prominently in election campaigns). The Anti-Corn Law League, a political movement set up in 1836, fought to abolish the Corn Laws and produced the innovative free-trade sticker seen here on an envelope dating from 1842. All the documents presented here are held by the University of Nottingham at Manuscripts and Special Collections. The University collects archival material relating to the history of the University itself and its predecessor bodies, including the Midland Agricultural and Dairy College, the history of the East Midlands, and the research interests of the University.     ___________________________________________________________ Mediacide: the Press’s Role in the Abdication Crisis of Edward VIII Joel Grissom ___________________________________________________________ On December 10, 1936, a group of men entered the ornate drawing room of Fort Belvedere, the private get-away of His Majesty, King Edward VIII. The mood of the room was informal as the King sat at his desk. Fifteen documents lay before him ready for his signature. Briefly scanning them, he quickly affixed, Edward, RI, to the documents. He then relinquished his chair to his brother, Albert, Duke of York, who did the same. The process was repeated twice more as Henry, Duke of Gloucester, and George, Duke of Kent, also signed the documents. The King stepped outside and inhaled the fresh morning air.1 To the King it smelled of freedom. After months of battling with his Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, and the Prime Minister’s allies in the establishment and the press, Edward was laying down the crown in order to marry the woman he loved, an American divorcee named Wallis Simpson. The next day the newspaper headlines across the world would broadcast the news of the King’s unprecedented decision. With the signing of the Instrument of Abdication, Edward had signed away his throne. The newspapers in both the United States and the United Kingdom that would report the abdication had played a major role in bringing about the fall of the King. While the British media had observed a blackout during most of the crisis, the media in the United States had reported the story of the King and Mrs.

He graduated with high honors from the Indiana University School of Music with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music and an Outside Field (Spanish) in 2003 after writing a thesis titled “Resonances of Faulkner in La muerte de Artemio Cruz.” He began at Brown University’s Department of His- panic Studies in 2005 and received his Master’s Degree in 2008; the title of his major paper was “El realismo grotesco en Rayuela.” After receiving a competitive dissertation fellowship, Kyle began work on this dissertation in 2009 and completed it in November 2012. Kyle has taught Spanish at Brown University’s Department of Hispanic Studies and the College of the Holy Cross’s Department of Spanish.
