In this study, Antheraea pernyi silk fibroin (ASF) micro/nano fibers with an average diameter of 324 nm were fabricated by electrospinning from an 8 wt % ASF solution in hexafluoroisopropanol. The electrospun fibers were cut into short fibers (~0.5 mm) and then dispersed in BSF solution. Next, BSF scaffolds with ASF micro/nano fibers were prepared by lyophilization. Scanning electron microscope images clearly showed connected channels between macropores after the addition of ASF micro/nano fibers; meanwhile, micro/nano fibers and micropores could be clearly observed on the pore walls. The results of in vitro cultures of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (EA. hy926) on BSF scaffolds showed that fibrous BSF scaffolds containing 150% ASF fibers significantly promoted cell proliferation during the initial stage. -

The molecular mass of this lectin was 380,000 and it formed an oligomeric structure of a subunit with a molecular mass of 38,000. The hemagglutinating activity in the hemolymph was found to increase with time after immunization with E. coli. Studies with antibody against the purified lectin showed that increase in the hemagglutinating activity was due to the same lectin, suggesting that the amount of the lectin increased in response to intrusion of foreign substances. Evidence for Paternal Leakage in Hybrid Periodical Cicadas (Hemiptera: Magicicada spp.) Kathryn M. Fontaine¤, John R. Cooley*, Chris Simon Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut, United States of America Mitochondrial inheritance is generally assumed to be maternal. However, there is increasing evidence of exceptions to this rule, especially in hybrid crosses. In these cases, mitochondria are also inherited paternally, so ‘‘paternal leakage’’ of mitochondria occurs. It is important to understand these exceptions better, since they potentially complicate or invalidate studies that make use of mitochondrial markers. We surveyed F1 offspring of experimental hybrid crosses of the 17-year periodical cicadas Magicicada septendecim, M. septendecula, and M. cassini for the presence of paternal mitochondrial markers at various times during development (1-day eggs; 3-, 6-, 9-week eggs; 16-month old 1st and 2nd instar nymphs). We found evidence of paternal leakage in both reciprocal hybrid crosses in all of these samples. The relative difficulty of detecting paternal mtDNA in the youngest eggs and ease of detecting leakage in older eggs and in nymphs suggests that paternal mitochondria proliferate as the eggs develop. Our data support recent theoretical predictions that paternal leakage may be more common than previously estimated. I own an original copy of fasc. 2 and can thus see that these reprints are accurate reproductions of the originals, except for size: originals measure ca, 19 X 27 cm and reprints are ca, 15 X 22 cm. It is now possible for both libraries and individual lepidopterists to own copies of these important works. Alan Louey Yen Edible insects and other invertebrates in Australia: future prospects Alan Louey Yen1 At the time of European settlement, the relative importance of insects in the diets of Australian Aborigines varied across the continent, reflecting both the availability of edible insects and of other plants and animals as food. The hunter-gatherer lifestyle adopted by the Australian Aborigines, as well as their understanding of the dangers of overexploitation, meant that entomophagy was a sustainable source of food. Over the last 200 years, entomophagy among Australian Aborigines has decreased because of the increasing adoption of European diets, changed social structures and changes in demography. Entomophagy has not been readily adopted by non-indigenous Australians, although there is an increased interest because of tourism and the development of a boutique cuisine based on indigenous foods (bush tucker). Tourism has adopted the hunter-gatherer model of exploitation in a manner that is probably unsustainable and may result in long-term environmental damage. The need for large numbers of edible insects (not only for the restaurant trade but also as fish bait) has prompted feasibility studies on the commercialization of edible Australian insects. Emphasis has been on the four major groups of edible insects: witjuti grubs (larvae of the moth family Cossidae), bardi grubs (beetle larvae), Bogong moths and honey ants. Many of the edible moth and beetle larvae grow slowly and their larval stages last for two or more years. Attempts at commercialization have been hampered by taxonomic uncertainty of some of the species and the lack of information on their biologies. -

Freitas1 ABSTRACT: Diversity of Lepidoptera in Santa Teresa, Espírito Santo, Brazil. The well-preserved, steep and heterogeneous environments of the region of Santa Teresa, Espírito Santo, shelter the richest known Lepidoptera community in the Atlantic Forest region (broad sense). The 533 species already recorded in the five best sampled families - Nymphalidae, Pieridae, and Papilionidae (butterflies), and Saturniidae and Sphingidae (moths) - are six more than the total listed for the next richest site (Itatiaia, Rio de Janeiro / Minas Gerais), and permit the prediction of a total fauna of at least 900 butterfly species. Many species in these five families are illustrated, and habitats and resources are given for the butterflies. Correlations, PCA, and canonical ordination show that the structure and richness of the butterfly community in 14 Atlantic Forest sites can be explained by local climatic, topographical, vegetation, and disturbance factors. The Santa Teresa fauna includes 12 species of Lepidoptera (with another 22 expected to occur) on Brazilian national or state lists of threatened animals, and a further 20 (with 11 expected) that are rare indicators restricted to the richest and most unique environments in the region. Preservation of the natural vegetation and traditional land-use patterns in the region should assure the continuity of this rich biota, derived from four different regions (the Bahia Hylaea, the Rio de Janeiro coastal plain, the Mantiqueira mountains, and the semi-deciduous forests in the interior). -

(DLV) PAPUA NEW GUINEA I 30 MAY– 16 / 20 JUNE 2018 LEADER: DANI LOPEZ VELASCO and JOSH BERGMARK Our first tour to Papua New Guinea –including New Britain- in 2018 was a great success and delivered a high number of quality birds. A total of 21 species of Birds-of-paradise (BoPs) - undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary, and “out of this world” bird families in the world-, were recorded, perhaps most memorable being a superb male Blue BoP, seen at close range near Kumul for as long as we wished. Just as impressive though were spectacular performances by displaying Raggiana and Greater BoPs in excellent light, stunning males King and Twelve-wired BoPs in the Kiunga area, a cracking adult male Growling Riflebird at Varirata, several amazing King-of-Saxony BoPs, waving their incredible head plumes like some strange insect antennae in the mossy forest of Tari Valley, great sightings of both Princess Stephanie´s and Ribbon-tailed Astrapias with their ridiculously long tail feathers, superb scope studies of Black –doing full display!- and Brown Sicklebills, uttering their machine-gun like calls, and so on. While Birds-of-paradise are certainly the signature family in PNG, there is of course plenty more besides, and this year the cracking and little-known Wallace´s Fairywren was awarded bird of the trip, ahead of BoPs, crowned pigeons and owlet- nightjars! We recorded a grand total of 33 species of pigeons and doves, -they reach their greatest diversity here in New Guinea, as do kingfishers-, including 11 Fruit Doves, and, during the extension, the rare Eastern Bronze Ground Dove. -
