A: I don’t believe that there needs to be one. In the past, I understand, there had been a face and it had been Cristyne, and to some degree Jonathan Tisch. But I think there will be an opportunity for me to say some things and to be part of that face as well as Tim McGuinness [executive director], Fred Dixon [vice president of tourism development], Maureen Reidy [chief executive of NYC Big Events] and Donna Keren [vice president of policy and research].

Q: You didn’t mention Mayor Bloomberg. A: Well, he goes without saying. He is the face of New York City. It’s his mandate, and we all buy into that. His goals become our goals, and frankly, we are looking to beat those goals. I’d love it if we attracted 50 million visitors by 2012.

Q: What can the city do to attract more conventions? A: As you know, we are renovating the Javits Convention Center, and I think that will be very helpful. Everything is moving in the right direction. One issue is that New York is an expensive city. We are addressing that by creating specific programs to better promote the boroughs. There are new hotels slated for Queens, Staten Island and The Bronx, and everyone knows that Brooklyn is thriving. So part of what we need to do is to [direct people to the other boroughs] by creating specific programs for them.

Q: Why is your advertising background important to this initiative? A: Advertising is a collaborative process. I would also say that coming from private industry, I know what it takes to run an organization that has to survive, thrive and grow. One of the things that I fully understand is that you cannot waste anything. A lot of programs that NYC & Company has done are great, but are they really valuable to the city? That’s what we are looking at.

Q: Is it a blow that we didn’t get the Democratic convention? A: I don’t think it’s a blow. There were some mixed feelings about whether it’s something we could completely dedicate ourselves to, in terms of raising tens of millions of dollars.

BUSINESS “Right now, I’m doing a lot of homework to get ready for this season.” —Lee Mazzilli, SportsNet NY Page 37 buck ennis

GOTHAM GIGS Make me a match JANIS SPINDEL, 50, is a matchmaker who says her fee starts at $25,000.Though she offers no guarantee of a wedding, she claims responsibility for 760 marriages, all of which she assumes are still intact. “If they were divorced, I would be the first phone call,” she says. MEN’S CLUB After hooking up 14 couples for fun, she founded Janis Spindel Serious Matchmaking Inc. in 1993. She initially accepted both male and female clients, but now works only for men. The women, she says, were “needy, annoying and high- maintenance.” LOVE HUNTER To add to her client base and roster of potential partners, Ms. Spindel regularly approaches people she considers attractive. She has pursued men and women on subway platforms and in supermarkets and restaurants. “It’s almost like they’re wearing a sign, ‘I’m rich, I’m good-looking and I need you,’ ” she says. WORKING IT OUT She met her husband at the gym 25 years ago.
