The collapse of the West Roman Empire .5th century / led to insecurity over Europe with barbaric invasions. Therefore, the population gathered and settled in perched villages . 0n 1295, Charles 00 of An)ou, Count of Provence and King of Naples , decided to found a new town by the sea : the Foundation Charter of the City of$ Villam Francam$ was thus set up. 0t granted ta1-free and other numerous ta1 e1emptions to the inhabitants who would accept to dwell in this new city. Villefranche ta es its name from that. 1388 is the second important step in Villefranche$s history as, after a war of succession, it was handed to$ 4uché de Savoie$ .4uchy of Savoy / that ept it for nearly -ive centuries. Two important -igures will oppose during that period, namely Charles V and Francis 0. The Savoy lands split the passageway between two of Charles V$s territories. Climb to the Èze Pass at 507m in altitude. This is your route to reach Menton, renowned for its citrus fruits and festival. Given the altitude you’ve reached, you’re rewarded with staggering plunging views down on St-Jean Cap- Ferrat, Beaulieu Bay and Cap d’Ail. On the free- wheeling descent to Menton, do stop to explore La Turbie and Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. At Menton, the Jean Cocteau Museum, the historic centre and Menton music festival count among memorable reasons for visiting this resort on the Italian frontier. The customs post has long stood unoccupied, inciting you to continue your Mediterranean cycling adventure uninterrupted along EuroVelo 8. Avanti! Départ Arrivée Nice Menton The route Signposting will be installed in due course along this Durée Distance 2 h 35 min 39,15 Km stage. This practically counts as a mountain stage, given the Niveau Thématique ascent to the Eze Pass. Except for a short cycle track I cycle a lot Seaside at Villefranche-sur-Mer, the rest of this stage is along roads shared with motorized traffic. Take care: descending from the Eze Pass, avoid the cycle lane, which can be extremely dangerous! Dopo aver raggiunto il Fort de la Revere scendiamo su ripidi versanti che portano in uno dei tratti più belli della Costa Azzurra, passando per Eze, uno dei villaggi “perché”, noto per la sua bellezza che ha ispirato scrittori come Nietzsche. L’itinerario comincia da La Turbie (479 m), sulle alture di Monaco, raggiungibile con bus di linea in partenza dal principato. A piedi esiste un sentiero piuttosto ripido (GR 51b) che parte a fianco del Parc Princesse Antoniette, dove si arriva con una serie di scalinate a partire dalla stazione SNCF. La Turbie merita una visita, sia per il caratteristico borgo, ma soprattutto per il maestoso “Trophée des Alpes”, monumento di origine romana, inizialmente alto 50 metri, che oltre a celebrare la potenza dell’imperatore Augusto, elencava nella base le tribù che i Romani stessi erano riusciti a sottomettere dopo anni di battaglie.
