Ash and Pikachu were enjoying their time on the tropical island of Melemele, which was covered in lush forests and golden beaches. There were all kinds of things to do— and so many new Pokémon to meet. Which was why our heroes were spending the day at . the mall? “What’s that?” Ash asked his friends from the Pokémon School. “Is it candy?” Rotom Dex was always ready with an answer. The device knew nearly everything about Pokémon. “It’s a kind of Pokémon food called Poké Beans,” Rotom Dex explained. The Poké Beans came in all sizes and colors. “Look, Steenee!” exclaimed Mallow, one of Ash’s 1 5508634_Text_v1.indd08634_Text_v1.indd 1 11/17/18/17/18 33:39:39 PMPM classmates. “Steenee likes these floral- patterned Poké Beans.” Mallow’s partner, Steenee, had recently evolved from Bounsweet. The rest of Ash’s classmates were there with their Pokémon, too: Lana, Sophocles, and Kiawe. Lillie had also joined them with her newly hatched Pokémon, Snowy. Snowy, with its bright blue eyes and thick, wavy, white tail, was an Alolan Vulpix. “This Pikachu-colored one might be good,” Ash said, picking up a mustard-yellow Poké Bean. “What do you think, buddy?” “Pika, pika!” Pikachu approved of its best friend’s choice. While it was fun shopping for tasty treats, Ash wasn’t so sure he wanted to join Mallow, Lana, and Lillie when they went to another store—in search of jewelry and other accessories. “The jewelry is made out of Heart Scales that wash up on the beach! And Corsola branches,” Mallow explained. “Everything is amazing and completely natural!” 2 5508634_Text_v1.indd08634_Text_v1.indd 2 11/17/18/17/18 33:39:39 PMPM Kiawe, Sophocles, and Rotom Dex all thought of good excuses to head home, but Lana, Lillie, and Mallow convinced Ash and Pikachu to come with them. Ash wasn’t interested in the items inside the store, but outside the store was another story! He walked out the back door and onto a long balcony. It overlooked the ocean, which was a particularly bright blue that day with calm waves. 3 5508634_Text_v1.indd08634_Text_v1.indd 3 11/17/18/17/18 33:39:39 PMPM “Beautiful, isn’t it?” came a voice from behind Ash. When Ash turned around, he saw the manager of the store. “It’s wonderful to be able to look at the ocean while I’m at work,” she said. “Can you make out that little island over there?” “You bet!” Ash replied, eyeing the little island. He could see a sandy beach and tall palm trees. “That’s known as Treasure Island,” the store manager explained. “I go there sometimes to find materials to make my jewelry. But I really do it for fun, because I get to see a lot of wild Pokémon.” Ash’s jaw dropped. The wild Pokémon were one of the best parts of the Alola region. Ash’s goal was to become a Pokémon Master, and he had learned a great deal since coming to the tropical islands. Observing Pokémon in nature was fascinating! 4 5508634_Text_v1.indd08634_Text_v1.indd 4 11/17/18/17/18 33:39:39 PMPM “I want to go to Treasure Island, too!” Ash declared. He looked at his partner. “What do you say?” “Pika, pika!” As usual, Pikachu agreed with its Trainer. “You’re welcome to borrow my kayak if you’d like,” the manager said. “Kayak? Really?” Ash could hardly believe his good fortune! “Of course,” the manager responded. “I’ll lend it to you as my little gift.” After a quick good-bye to Lana, Lillie, and Mallow, Ash and Pikachu set off across the bay. Each thrust of the paddle propelled them closer to the small island on the horizon. “Ocean to the right . ocean to the left,” Ash said, pausing to take a deep breath of salty sea air. “Ocean everywhere!” Pikachu breathed in, too. “The sky’s almost as blue as the ocean!” Ash listened to the gentle waves on the side of the 5 5508634_Text_v1.indd08634_Text_v1.indd 5 11/17/18/17/18 33:39:39 PMPM thin boat. “It almost feels like we’re the only ones on the planet. Weird, but awesome!” After a peaceful moment, Ash was ready for action again. “We’re almost there. Let’s step on the gas!” Using all his strength, he tugged the paddle through the water, one side and then the other. Water-type Pokémon rested on the rocks, taking in the sun. Others swam in schools around the kayak. 6 5508634_Text_v1.indd08634_Text_v1.indd 6 11/17/18/17/18 33:39:39 PMPM.

A POKÉBALANCING ACT: THE MANAGEMENT OF JAPANESE CULTURAL “ODOR” IN POKÉMON NICHOLAS RAES 216 Pages In this project, I analyzed two seasons of the Pokémon anime to discover patterns of cultural “odor” management employed by the show’s producers and editors. In the first season of Pokémon , the producers of the anime included many symbolic representations of Japanese cultural artifacts within the visual features of the show. However, between the Japanese and US versions of the season, most instances of Japanese linguistic text were either “scrubbed” from scenes entirely or replaced with English text. These techniques struck a careful balance between including and excluding Japanese specificity within the first season, subtly expressing to non- Japanese audiences the Japanese origin of the show. However, in the twentieth season, producers removed symbolic representations of Japanese culture almost entirely – replacing these instead with symbols indicative of Hawaiian culture.

  • Pokémon in Organized Crime
Letter from the Chair Hello, Pokémon Trainers! I welcome you all, with building anticipation and excitement, to the first PokéMUN session at the fourth annual Winchester Model United Nations conference (and it’s virtual!) My name is Elina Chen, and I will be serving as your Chair for this specialized committee. I am currently a senior at Winchester High School, and this is my fourth year in the school’s Model United Nations Club, which I now serve as a club officer for. I have overseen previous committee sessions at WinMUN, and I regularly attend national Model UN conferences each year as well. Aside from being a member of MUN, I am also the president of the school’s Anime Club. I take pride in being an otaku, and Pokémon was the first anime I ever watched as I grew up, although it was quite a long time ago. PokéMUN will be a learning experience for me, so if anyone feels nervous about their lack of Pokémon knowledge, don’t worry! People all over the world fear that societal order will collapse due to the power imbalance that comes with the introduction of Pokémon, and are calling for immediate actions to implement regulations for moderating this uncontrolled power. During the committee sessions, we will be discussing one of the two topics provided to you: Pokémon Labor Rights and Pokémon Organized Crime. There will not be any specific storyline you need to follow, since you will be writing the stories yourselves with the background guide as a foundation. Everyone will have their individual stances on each of the topics, and your goal will be to pass regulations in your favor.

  • A Feminist Content Analysis of Female Video Game Characters, and Interviews with Female Gamers
“Pretty Good for a Girl”: A Feminist Content Analysis of Female Video Game Characters, and Interviews with Female Gamers Cardiff University School of Journalism, Media, and Culture Master of Philosophy (Journalism Studies) 2018 Elizabeth Munday Abstract Feminist media scholars have long sought to understand the representations of women in the media, in which women are consistently depicted as secondary to men, which they have used to highlight issues of gender relations. My research involved the analysis of representations of female characters in games and explored how female gamers make sense of them, providing a more in-depth look at women in the media, whilst also addressing issues of gender such as leisure time. The gendering of leisure is important as it provides a wider basis for my more nuanced arguments about video games and those who play them. Throughout my research I endeavoured to study not only how women are represented in video games, but also the experiences of female gamers and how they continue to interact with the gaming community. Drawing widely from existing feminist media research, I studied the common representations of women in video games, and what female gamers thought of them. I also researched their experiences as female gamers within the gaming community – how they had been treated as “gamers”, but also how they continued to engage and interact with the gaming community. In order to gather this information, I utilised Content Analysis to gather and analyse game content through further Visual Analysis. This provided me with a range of insights into common patterns in the representations of women across a wide range of currently popular games, such as the role of healer.
