Tel: (209) 946 2981 Email: [email protected] 1 The UK Netball Superleague: A Case Study of Franchising in Elite Women's Sport Abstract This paper draws on theories of franchising in examining the emergence of the UK Netball Superleague in 2005. The focus of the paper is to explore the development of an empowered franchise framework as part of England Netball's elite performance strategy and the consequences of the Superleague for player performance, team success, and commercial potential of the franchises. The findings from 22 in-depth interviews conducted between 2008-2011 with franchise personnel and sport media/marketing consultants inform the discussion. The paper further comments on the implications of the empowered franchise system for developing NGB elite performance strategies. Introduction Emerging in the late 19th century as a sport “initially designed and traditionally administered as an activity for promoting appropriate forms of femininity” (Tagg, 2008, p 410), Netball is played by more than 20 million people in over 80 nations across the globe (INFA, 2011). It is an invasion ball game predominantly played by girls and women between teams of 7 players. -

Hertfordshire Mavericks Announce Their NSL Coaching Team for Season 2015-16
Hertfordshire Mavericks Announce their NSL Coaching Team for Season 2015-16 Hertfordshire Mavericks are delighted to announce they have reappointed Sam Bird as the Hertfordshire Mavericks Head Coach and she is to be joined by Mel Mansfield and New Zealander Robyn Broughton as her two assistant coaches for this season’s Superleague campaign. We are delighted that Mel has re-signed her coaching contract following her move to Hertfordshire Mavericks last year from Surrey Storm. As well as being the assistant coach Mel will continue to focus as the specialist shooting coach for the squad this year. Robyn joins this coaching team having been Head Coach for two ANZ teams since 2008 (Southern Steel and Central Pulse). She has also been the Assistant Coach for the New Zealand Silver Ferns and a New Zealand National Selector. Robyn will be working predominantly with the Defending end of the squad. Sam Bird said: “I am really pleased to be reappointed as Head Coach again and be joined by Mel and Robyn. Having spoken with Robyn about the role, I am very excited to welcome her to Hertfordshire Mavericks and to introduce her to our new long squad, coaches, staff and sponsors. We have some great pre- season matches this year against Scotland, Northern Ireland, Surrey Storm, Team Bath and Loughborough Lightning and this will be a chance to work together in a competitive environment before the Superleague starts”. The trio of coaches will also coach the newly formed Mavericks U23 Squad that will compete in a new “bridging” competition against Surrey Storm, Loughborough Lightening, Team Northumbria, Manchester Thunder and Yorkshire Jets over three Saturdays in October and November. -
2017 Annual Report
Netball East Annual Report 2017 Date: June 2017 Page 1 of 29 Chairman’s introduction I am pleased to introduce the Netball East Annual report which highlights the achievements of the Counties, Region and Technical Support Groups (TSG’s). Our regional manager, Sarah Beattie left England Netball earlier this year, which has resulted in an additional load on the volunteers on the regional board. My sincere thanks to Sarah for her contribution to the region and I wish her the very best for her future career. My thanks also to our regional co-ordinator Florrie Jones, who has worked very hard to support us all and has been willing to take on additional tasks. Last year at the AGM we shared our plans to start a review of the structures of the Regional Management Board and TSG’s and Mavericks board, as there were some synergies. That review started and progressed well, but we have decided not to progress with any implementation until we are clearer on the expectations of England netball of the roles of the regional and county boards. However, regional performance and regional academies will transition to Mavericks from 1st August 2017. In the 4th and last year of the 2013-17 Whole Sport Plan significant progress has been made in achieving our goals. We have continued to increase participation figures and the Netball East specific achievements can be read in the TSG lead reports. Everyone involved should be proud of what we have attained. The Technical Support Group reports and those of the County Chairs demonstrate the scope of work that has been undertaken during the past twelve months and highlight our many successes and achievements. -

As well as the increase in the number of sides competing for the title, we also welcome three new teams to the league with Scottish Sirens, Severn Stars and Wasps all taking their place for next year’s campaign. They will be joined by champions Surrey Storm and six other sides from the 2016 season. England Netball Chief Executive Officer, Joanna Adams said: “We are thrilled to announce the new line-up for the 2017 Vitality Netball Superleague. Each team submitted an exceptional proposal which we are certain will make for an incredibly exciting season. “The Superleague has continued to grow in popularity since its launch in 2005 and with record attendances and ticket sales last year, we were keen to make a bold move in growing the number of teams and the aspirations of all involved. We feel this line-up really achieves this” “In a ground breaking move for England Netball and English sport, we are delighted to welcome the iconic sporting brand Wasps in to the league. We are sure they will be as keen to be competitive in their first season, as they always have been in rugby and we are sure that the other teams will relish the challenge. “It is good news for the Severn region, as their team the Severn Stars will make their Superleague bow in 2017.
