Tel: (209) 946 2981 Email: [email protected] 1 The UK Netball Superleague: A Case Study of Franchising in Elite Women's Sport Abstract This paper draws on theories of franchising in examining the emergence of the UK Netball Superleague in 2005. The focus of the paper is to explore the development of an empowered franchise framework as part of England Netball's elite performance strategy and the consequences of the Superleague for player performance, team success, and commercial potential of the franchises. The findings from 22 in-depth interviews conducted between 2008-2011 with franchise personnel and sport media/marketing consultants inform the discussion. The paper further comments on the implications of the empowered franchise system for developing NGB elite performance strategies. Introduction Emerging in the late 19th century as a sport “initially designed and traditionally administered as an activity for promoting appropriate forms of femininity” (Tagg, 2008, p 410), Netball is played by more than 20 million people in over 80 nations across the globe (INFA, 2011). It is an invasion ball game predominantly played by girls and women between teams of 7 players.

The top two teams play in both the Hampshire and British Colleges Leagues and also compete in many tournaments through the year. These include: U19 English Schools, Hampshire Invitational, British Colleges Regional Tournaments and the Mixed Netball Tournament. Itchen College has for the last twelve years consistently remained in the top four teams of the Hampshire League. They also reach the semi-finals of tournament competitions on a regular basis. Students who join the Netball Academy will train and/or compete at least three times a week. These sessions include netball-specific fitness and team training, where skill level is improved through drills. All players will be challenged to ensure progression and will also be supported in their academic studies. High performance players will also have access to strength and conditioning training as well as on-site physiotherapy and sports massage. Objectives of the Programme The Academy aims to target both elite and participation netballers, from those who are starting out on their journey to those who are competing regularly. With specially tailored training and competitions, the college’s objective is to allow all netball players the opportunity to develop.

We start this year with congratulations to Margaret Cassidy OBE who celebrated her 100th birthday on 27 January. Full details with photo’s to be included in our April newsletter. Looking forward to 2014, excitement is beginning to build for the Commonwealth Games which are now only six months away. If you have tickets for the Games, please let us know as it’ll be good to know who’ll be there on which dates. Joan Mills has been Janet Wrighton and I working hard ensuring the EN supporters club have the best deals available, so we should have a good turn out of supporters at the games. Yvonne and I are working on EN’s bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for money that will allow us to employ someone to undertake the huge job of cataloguing the archives held centrally here at Netball House. We anticipate that the project will last up to three years as we are planning a couple of exhibitions and oral history element to our bid. In December, I went to Dartford in Kent to see what Joan Mills, Cathy Hickey and their team had done with Kent’s archives, are now housed within the Bergman-Osterberg museum. The day was most informative and it was good to speak to the museum curator about the storage and display of the archives.

Jennifer Saunders will captain one of the teams made up of celebrities and netball legends. She will face tough competition from a star-studded team led by Strictly Come Dancing’s Oti Mabuse. Oti, who grew up playing netball in South Africa. The match will take place following two World Cup play-off games (teams to be confirmed) and spectators attending session 16 on Friday 19 July will be able to enjoy the exhibition game as part of their session ticket. November 2012 NSL Home Fixtures Pre-Season at Bath Rugby 07/02/2012 @ 8pm On a damp and dreary weekend in October, Celtic Dragons: the Superleague girls had their annual STV, Bath preseason get together at the Bath Rugby’s newly renovated stately home in Farleigh 01/03/2012 @ 8pm Hungerford. L’Boro Lightning: STV, Bath The weekend’s activities were kept as a secret from the players including the fact that they 08/03/2012 @ 8pm would be bunking in tents rather than the warm Team Northumbria lodgings of the main house! STV, Bath A range of activities were put on for the girls including an orienteering session around bath Team Bath assistant coach Denise Ellis said following the Bath Skyline walk. There was the chance to practice their seamanship in of the weekend: ‘Camping in October is not for the fainthearted, hopefully this will prepare the Welcome: Pg 1 Canadian Canoes, a cross country bike ride mixed in with some on court sessions and players for the hard work when the season starts in February. Their support, in all its forms, is invaluable at all levels of our game. Whether you chair a region, sit on a county league committee, coach, are a primary carer, team liaison or official, you open up the netball centre gates at 8am on National Volunteering Landscape 4 saturday making sure the courts are ready, sell programmes or meet and greet an International or Superleague game, volunteers make our sport. Sport Volunteering Landscape 6 Volunteering in netball from the age of 11 has provided me with a lifetime of confidence, opportunities and understanding as what teamwork can achieve (on and off the court) and England Netball in 2019 8 a sincere respect for many other volunteers that give so much of their time and expertise to enable women and girls to reach their potential through netball. It gets bigger each term, which reflects the many activities, experiences and opportunities our children get as an integral part of their curriculum here at Thornleigh Salesian College. I think we have had the best start that we have ever had to any academic year and we are so proud of all of our children. Our revised rewards policy means that all students are rewarded for maintaining the very high standards of behaviour and learning here, but it also means that they can gain additional points for activities they are involved in both in and out of school. Many of our children are competing at a high standard at a particular sport or are performing in local theatres. Their talent amazes me and you will see plenty of evidence of this inside. The Tanzania project this Summer was absolutely fantastic and the group of sixth formers that I took were incredible. I want to thank all the staff who gave up 4 weeks of their Summer holiday to make this possible. This year’s Mission Week was the best yet on the theme of ‘Make God’s Love Visible’ and we certainly did that with the activities and workshops that we had throughout the week. I am very, very proud of this school and I refer you to the letter that I have enclosed with this newsletter.
