Porsche at Le Mans Meet the Heroes of Le Mans • Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1 Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans Porsche in the starting line-up for 63 years The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the most famous endurance race in the world. The post-war story of the 24 Heures du Mans begins in the year 1949. And already in 1951 – the pro - duction of the first sports cars in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen commenced in March the previous year – a small delegation from Porsche KG tackles the high-speed circuit 200 kilometres west of Paris in the Sarthe department. Class victory right at the outset for the 356 SL Aluminium Coupé marks the beginning of one of the most illustrious legends in motor racing: Porsche and Le Mans. Race cars from Porsche have contested Le Mans every year since 1951. The reward for this incredible stamina (Porsche is the only marque to have competed for 63 years without a break) is a raft of records, including 16 overall wins and 102 class victories to 2013. The sporting competition and success at the top echelon of racing in one of the world’s most famous arenas is as much a part of Porsche as the number combination 911. After a number of class wins in the early fifties with the 550, the first time on the podium in the overall classification came in 1958 with the 718 RSK clinching third place.

  • Kremer's Uber 935 – the Ultra-Rare K4
www.porscheroadandrace.com Kremer’s Uber 935 – the ultra-rare K4 Published: 5th June 2020 By: Glen Smale Online version: https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/kremers-uber-935-the-ultra-rare-k4/ 1981 Porsche Kremer 935 K4 – chassis #K4-01 In the mid-1970s, Porsche developed the 911 for racing, and in the process, it created the all-conquering 935. In 1978, Norbert Singer was responsible for building the ultimate factory 935, the Moby Dick 935/78, and although this race car had a very short active racing life, it has gone down in history as one of the most iconic 935s of all time. Despite winning only one race, the Silverstone 6 Hours on 14 May 1978, Porsche’s Moby Dick became one of the most copied 911s of its era. www.porscheroadandrace.com 1981 Porsche Kremer 935 K4 – chassis #K4-01 After the Moby Dick 935/78 had raced at Silverstone and in the Le Mans 24 Hours that year, the car was retired, as the factory’s attention turned to the next generation of race cars. However, Porsche allowed some private teams with close ties to the factory, to continue purchasing components and drivetrains for the 935, but they were left to design and produce their own upgraded chassis and bodywork. One of those privateer teams, Kremer Racing, did a particularly good job during the late ‘70s, creating the 935 K1 (1976), K2 (1977) and K3 (1979). Kremer Racing, based in Cologne, Germany, didn’t restrict their work to just mechanical preparation and assembly, but they also developed their own bodywork which really set them apart from the rest of the field.

Mosport 1000 km, 11 August 1985: (From L-R) Manfred Kremer, Manfred Winkelhock and Marc Surer in discussion prior to the race We were informed on Tuesday that Manfred Kremer passed away at the age of 81 years, and then on Wednesday, we got the news that Sabine Schmitz, the ‘Queen of the Nürburgring’ had also passed away. These two personalities, although a generation apart, brought success and exposure to the Porsche brand in very different ways. Manfred Kremer: 1940-2021 www.porscheroadandrace.com Mario Andretti visited the Porsche race department in Weissach in 1983 – (from the left) Helmuth Bott with Peter Falk and Mario Andretti. On the extreme right is Manfred Kremer with Erwin Kremer third from right The Kremer brothers, together with friend Hermann Bürvenich, started their workshop in 1962 in Cologne, Germany. The elder brother, Erwin, was the racing driver while Manfred, the quiet one, was the engineer who preferred to stay in the background. Kremer Racing grew from strength to strength and in 1970 they entered a Porsche 911 ST in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. They finished seventh overall that year, and so began the team’s climb up the ladder with bigger and better cars until in the late ‘70s Kremer modified the Porsche factory’s cars to their own specification.

  • Porsche 962 Chassis 118 Group C Series
Porsche 962 Chassis 118 Group C Series The Porsche 962 was built by Porsche as the successor to the infamous 956, together these Group C cars had arguably the longest frontline international career in motorsport history totally dominating an era of Group C racing that is still talked about and fondly remembered today. The reason for the introduction of the 962 was to allow the car into IMSA racing in the States as the 956 was banned as the drivers feet were ahead of the front axle centre line. Hence the 962 was made with a longer tub to bring the drivers feet further back. During the early years of the career of the 962, the car was one of the most dominant cars in motorsport. The championships won by teams campaigning the 962 included the World Sportscar Championship title in 1985 and 1986, the IMSA GT Championship every year from 1985 to 1988, the Interserie championship from 1987 until 1992, all four years of the Supercup series (1986 to 1989), and the All Japan Sports Prototype Championship from 1985 until 1989. The 962 also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1986 and 1987 as well as later winning under the Dauer 962 badge in 1994. The presence of strong factory teams, such as Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, and Toyota, competing against privateer 962s eventually led to the car becoming less successful in the later 1980s. Despite the presence of new cars and manufacturers, 962s would continue to win races into 1993. Technical Specifications: Chassis: Bonded and riveted aluminum monocoque.

  • Le Mans 24 Hours 1976 Porsche 934 Turbo
! The Ex - Le Mans 24 Hours, Daytona 24 Hours, And Multiple Sebring 12 Hours 1976 Porsche 934 Turbo RSR Chassis Number: 930 670 0161 • One of just 31 Porsche 934s built, and supplied new in yellow to Luxembourg where first owner Nicholas Koob used 0161 in races and hillclimbs. • Very successful with second owner Hans-Christian Jurgensen in Germany, who campaigned 0161 over three seasons with many victories and World Championship appearances. • Bought by Puerto Rican racer Mandy Gonzales for 1980, and taken to Le Mans by him where it competed in, and led it’s class in the 24 Hours. 0161 also went on to compete in the Sebring 12 Hours and Daytona 24 Hours with a notable result of 3rd in class. • 0161 was upgraded with the more powerful 930/79 engine specification and subsequently to have interchangeable 934 and 935 specification bodywork so that it could run between IMSA and Latin American races with then owner Kikos Fonseca. • Having remained in storage with Fonseca before further ownerships in America, 0161 came to Europe and received a bare metal restoration by Kremer Racing, to the 934/5 specification you see today. • In the current ownership, 0161 has competed multiple times at the prestigious Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion as well as the Porsche Rennsport Reunion, held at the Laguna Seca circuit in California. • Benefitting from an engine and gearbox rebuild prior to arriving with us here, 0161 is accompanied by 930/71 engine parts, along with factory 934 tail, 934 rear wheel arches, rebuilt spare original RSR brake callipers and restored original seats, enabling the next owner to take 0161 back to factory 934 specification if they so desire.

Strictly speaking, Porsche has already manufactured three sports cars back in 1939, the Type 64 (or 60K10), but these were produced under different circumstances and specifically for the Berlin-Rome race. The Second World War intervened, and it was only after the cessation of hostilities in Europe that Ferry Porsche was able to turn his mind to producing a production sports car that bore his family name. www.porscheroadandrace.com 1948 Porsche 356 No.1 in the Porsche Museum, Stuttgart, Germany, 2010 The first Porsche 356, the famous No.1 Roadster, was homologated by the state of Kärnten in Austria on 8 June 1948, hence the ‘K’ in the car’s registration of K45-286.

  • How a Porsche Survived at Le Mans on Coca-Cola
www.porscheroadandrace.com How a Porsche survived at Le Mans on Coca-Cola Published: 17th May 2019 By: Richard Wiley Online version: https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/how-a-porsche-survived-at-le-mans-on-coca-cola/ Le Mans 24 Hours, 10-11 June 1989: Just after the start of the race, the #15 Richard Lloyd Racing Porsche 962 GTi of Steven Andskar, David Hobbs and Damon Hill passes the pits When you were last with Richard Wiley, we were hurtling around a damp La Sarthe in 1988 with Stuck in the Shell Dunlop 962, trimming the grass and setting up great plumes of spray as the Porsche barked its flat tones in a relentless but ultimately fruitless pursuit of a howling Jaguar V12 which was on the brink of grinding to a halt with no gears but which somehow survived to the flag. A Sting in the Tale Part 2 continues Richard Wiley’s Le Mans expose with a few deviations in between, and how a Porsche survived at Le Mans on Coca- www.porscheroadandrace.com Cola. The first deviation involved visits in 1988 to Spa, Brands and Silverstone where I stood in wonderment at the sheer spectacle of Group C in full flight, albeit with eyes only for the veritable fleets of 962s on display. Notwithstanding this bias, I have to admit that the Sauber-Mercedes entries sounded utterly glorious. Kyalami 1000 kms, 10 December 1983: The #1 Rothmans factory Porsche 956 driven by Jacky Ickx/Jochen Mass calls into the pits. Norbert Singer can be seen top right of the photograph Before we head off back to Le Mans though, what follows is a major deviation.
