Press Information Meet the Heroes of Le Mans Mission 2014. Our Return. Porsche at Le Mans Meet the Heroes of Le Mans • Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1 Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans Porsche in the starting line-up for 63 years The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the most famous endurance race in the world. The post-war story of the 24 Heures du Mans begins in the year 1949. And already in 1951 – the pro - duction of the first sports cars in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen commenced in March the previous year – a small delegation from Porsche KG tackles the high-speed circuit 200 kilometres west of Paris in the Sarthe department. Class victory right at the outset for the 356 SL Aluminium Coupé marks the beginning of one of the most illustrious legends in motor racing: Porsche and Le Mans. Race cars from Porsche have contested Le Mans every year since 1951. The reward for this incredible stamina (Porsche is the only marque to have competed for 63 years without a break) is a raft of records, including 16 overall wins and 102 class victories to 2013. The sporting competition and success at the top echelon of racing in one of the world’s most famous arenas is as much a part of Porsche as the number combination 911. After a number of class wins in the early fifties with the 550, the first time on the podium in the overall classification came in 1958 with the 718 RSK clinching third place.

  • Kremer's Uber 935 – the Ultra-Rare K4
www.porscheroadandrace.com Kremer’s Uber 935 – the ultra-rare K4 Published: 5th June 2020 By: Glen Smale Online version: https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/kremers-uber-935-the-ultra-rare-k4/ 1981 Porsche Kremer 935 K4 – chassis #K4-01 In the mid-1970s, Porsche developed the 911 for racing, and in the process, it created the all-conquering 935. In 1978, Norbert Singer was responsible for building the ultimate factory 935, the Moby Dick 935/78, and although this race car had a very short active racing life, it has gone down in history as one of the most iconic 935s of all time. Despite winning only one race, the Silverstone 6 Hours on 14 May 1978, Porsche’s Moby Dick became one of the most copied 911s of its era. www.porscheroadandrace.com 1981 Porsche Kremer 935 K4 – chassis #K4-01 After the Moby Dick 935/78 had raced at Silverstone and in the Le Mans 24 Hours that year, the car was retired, as the factory’s attention turned to the next generation of race cars. However, Porsche allowed some private teams with close ties to the factory, to continue purchasing components and drivetrains for the 935, but they were left to design and produce their own upgraded chassis and bodywork. One of those privateer teams, Kremer Racing, did a particularly good job during the late ‘70s, creating the 935 K1 (1976), K2 (1977) and K3 (1979). Kremer Racing, based in Cologne, Germany, didn’t restrict their work to just mechanical preparation and assembly, but they also developed their own bodywork which really set them apart from the rest of the field.

www.porscheroadandrace.com Double blow for the world of Porsche motorsport Published: 19th March 2021 By: Glen Smale Online version: https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/double-blow-for-the-world-of-porsche-motorsport/ www.porscheroadandrace.com Sabine Schmitz at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, 20 May 2012 www.porscheroadandrace.com It is with great sadness that we bring you the news this week of the passing of not one, but two, significant names in the world of Porsche motorsport. Mosport 1000 km, 11 August 1985: (From L-R) Manfred Kremer, Manfred Winkelhock and Marc Surer in discussion prior to the race We were informed on Tuesday that Manfred Kremer passed away at the age of 81 years, and then on Wednesday, we got the news that Sabine Schmitz, the ‘Queen of the Nürburgring’ had also passed away. These two personalities, although a generation apart, brought success and exposure to the Porsche brand in very different ways. Manfred Kremer: 1940-2021 www.porscheroadandrace.com Mario Andretti visited the Porsche race department in Weissach in 1983 – (from the left) Helmuth Bott with Peter Falk and Mario Andretti. On the extreme right is Manfred Kremer with Erwin Kremer third from right The Kremer brothers, together with friend Hermann Bürvenich, started their workshop in 1962 in Cologne, Germany. The elder brother, Erwin, was the racing driver while Manfred, the quiet one, was the engineer who preferred to stay in the background. Kremer Racing grew from strength to strength and in 1970 they entered a Porsche 911 ST in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. They finished seventh overall that year, and so began the team’s climb up the ladder with bigger and better cars until in the late ‘70s Kremer modified the Porsche factory’s cars to their own specification.
