(COLEOPTERA, SCARABAEIDAE, ONITICELLINI) Tristão Branco Rua de Camões, 788, 2º Dto, P-4000-142 Porto, Portugal − [email protected] Abstract: The taxonomical history of the genus Tiniocellus Péringuey, 1901 and the 10 species-group names that have been associated with it is reviewed, and the reasons that justify the creation of Nitiocellus gen. n. for Oniticellus panthera Boucomont, 1921 and Oniticellus collarti Janssens, 1939, are explained. The taxonomy of the Oniticellini is briefly reviewed and a key is provided for the separation of Tiniocellus and Nitiocellus gen. n. from all the other genera currently ranged in the tribe. The synonymies of Oniticellus variegatus Fåhraeus, 1857 and Oniticellus humilis Gerstaecker, 1871 with Tiniocellus spinipes (Roth, 1851) are confirmed. The Asian Tiniocellus imbellis (Bates, 1891) and the African Tiniocellus setifer (Kraatz, 1895) are rehabilitated as good species. Oniticellus modestus Arrow, 1908 is synonymised with T. imbellis, and Tiniocellus asmarensis Balthasar, 1968 with T. spinipes. Three Afrotropical species, one of them containing two subspecies, are described: T. praetermissus sp. n. from western Africa, T. dolosus sp. n. from eastern, central and western Africa, T. eurypygus sp. n. from South Africa, the nominotypical subspecies from the uplands west of the Drakensberg mountain range, and T. eurypygus transdrakensbergensis ssp. n. from the lowlands east of the same mountain range. Keys are provided to the species and sub- species of Tiniocellus, and to the species of Nitiocellus gen. n. For this study 4,628 specimens were examined, including the name-bearing types of all the species-group names, except that of T. -

Specimens considered males by Balthasar were actually identical to the female of Liatongus denticornis (Fairmaire, 1887), and those sexed as females were identical to the female of L. -

The tribe is composed of 256 described species worldwide, while from India, 26 species were recorded to date. Beetles belonging to this tribe are commonly known as paracoprid dung beetles and perform some remarkable ecological functions. Nevertheless, there is a dearth of knowledge on the occurrence of these beetles in the mega diverse tropical forests of the Himalayan foothills located in the north of the West Bengal state of India. In addition to feeding on mammal dung, dung beetles also use dung to form underground brood balls which are used for larval development. This process instigates several ecological functions, such as dung removal and nutrient cycling. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of dung removal in pastoral and natural habitats but the effect of dung beetle body size on the amount of nutrients transferred when dung is buried remains unclear. In this preliminary study, we investigate the role of African dung beetle body size in nutrient cycling. We analyzed the nutrient content of soil directly underneath dung pats using three treatments containing dung beetles of varying sizes and one control treatment without beetles over a 112-day period. Our data show that dung beetle body size has a significant effect on the quantity of macronutrients transferred over time and that dung beetle body size is an important factor in the type and amount of nutrients transferred. -

These insects are very important, ecologically and economically, both. They act as nature’s scavengers and enrich the soil by recycling human feces and dung of animals in the soil. Some of the beetles are plant eaters, and are serious pests of agriculture, forestry and fruit trees. This study reports 19 species of scarab beetles belonging to 17 genera under 13 tribes and 5 subfamilies from the state of Tripura, north east India.These include 9 species and 12 genera as new reports from the state. Taxonomic keys for the identification of subfamilies, tribes, genera and species are provided by studying the morphological characteristics of the specimens that were collected from different locations of the state. Shinta Puspitasari April 2016 2 Abstract Beetles comprise not only the most diverse group of insects, but also contribute significantly to vital ecological functions. A quantitative formula to determine the optimal level of investment in the beneficial beetle conservation is still not available. I aim to establish specific attention to beetles and their role in tropical island ecosystems in small archipelago in Indonesia. The study aims to give further insights into beetle diversity patterns on islands in the Kepulauan Seribu Marine National Park and on Java, and how island isolation and area affect assemblage composition. My research also provides insights into the effects of anthropogenic activities on beetle diversity on these islands. A first important result is the substantial number of highly abundant island species and a high number of unique island species found in the study areas, indicating islands as potentially important for the global conservation of genetic resources. My results also highlight the highly varied results relating to the use of two different types of traps, pitfall traps and FITs, for sampling beetles. It underscores the need for complementary trapping strategies using multiple methods for beetle community surveys in tropical islands. -

ABSTRACT BERTONE, MATTHEW ALAN. Dung Beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae and Geotrupidae) of North Carolina Cattle Pastures and Their Implications for Pasture Improvement (Under the direction of D. Wes Watson) Dung beetles in the families Scarabaeidae (subfamilies Aphodiinae, Scarabaeinae and Coprinae) and Geotrupidae (Geotrupinae) aid in the decomposition of dung, providing many benefits to pasture and animal health. They compete with pestiferous flies and parasitic nematodes for dung resources, enrich the soil by burying large quantities of nutrient-rich dung, and effectively mix and aerate soil through tunneling. Very little is known about the composition of dung beetle species complexes existing in North Carolina cattle pastures or about their seasonal activity. Dung-baited pitfall trapping was conducted for 18 months in cattle pastures of two distinct regions of NC, the piedmont and the coastal plain. Data from a piedmont site and coastal plain site revealed a disparity in species richness (14 and 28 species, respectively) and beetle numbers (20 traps yielding 85,882 beetles and 10 traps yielding 4,111 beetles, respectively). However, both sites had similarly species compositions and were dominated by nine exotic dung beetles. The seasonal activity of 30 species is reported, including two new state records, Aphodius prodromus Brahm and Onthophagus gazella (Fabricius). These data represent important background information on the relative abundance and richness of dung beetle species in North Carolina. Two additional studies evaluated the benefit of dung beetles on soil nutrition, and the off-target effects of the insect growth regulator methoprene on dung beetle populations. The activity of two species of tunneling dung beetles (Onthophagus gazella and Onthophagus taurus Schreber) was found to contribute to the general nutrition of three soil types (piedmont clay, coastal plains sandy-loam and play sand) under laboratory conditions. -
