Plan of Structure 1 2 5 ..............................103 vii ABSTRACT Jamestown, Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in the New World is considered by many to be the most significant historic site in the United States, Protected by a stewardship including the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA) since 1897* Jamestown became part of Colonial National Historical Park (CNHP) and the responsibility of the National Parle Service (NFS) by Presidential proclamation in 1930* Archaeological investigations have taken place at Jamestown since 1897 under the APVA and later from the 1930s through 1930s on—and—off under the supervision of NPS, A succession of engineers, historians, architects, and archaeologists have contributed a number of significant publications on the seventeenth- century culture of Jamestown, Historical archaeology can be said to have developed at Jamestown, Vii'ginia. It Is unusual that so many of the original researchers at a historic site still exist to augment the story of archaeology there but such is the case with Jamestown, Contained in this written thesis as well as in a videotaped documentary produced in conjunction with it is the oral history of archaeology at Jamestown, This audiovisual presentation is aimed at disseminating the archaeological information to a broadier television auuience, Three primary influences are responsible for the approach taken to interpreting the historic site of Jamestown, first, the ethics of historic preservation and its cor ollary federal legislation which are accountable for protecting cultural resources. Second, the historiographical biases of the past research design which uctermined the archaeological objectives. third, the evolution of anthro­ pological theory which today, combined with the historical method, offers a new approach to interpreting the archae­ ological aata at Jamestown. .in e thnohistori c hypothesis interpreting Jamestown's seventeenth—century culture in light of Anglo—Dutch acculturation due to maritime trade influences may be ta.cen into cons id orati on for future excavations viii HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGY AT JAMESTOWN, VIRGINIA INTRODUCTION I can still recall the thrill that came the day in 1936 when I picked up my first artifact from the cellar floor of the house I was excavating at Jamestown. There in my hand was not just a non­ descript sherd from a pot that some unknown Indian had used but here was Captain John Smith in the flesh. Well, maybe not John Smith, but at least a person that one could possibly identify and talk about. It was this identification with personalities that impressed me most about this new kind of archaeology. In 1977* at the urging of Stanley South, J, C* Harrington wrote a recollection of his personal experience and involvement in historical archaeology for a prospective publication. The insights this article contains go beyond those of "Jamestown Archaeology in Retrospect" (Harrington, 1984), a formal overview contrib uted to a new book (Orr and Crozierf 1984), The former gave a glimpse of a personality one could identify with while the latter is somewhat like an artifact description The people that brought life to the site of Jamestown have a story to tell first hand. Their story is the topi of this thesis. During the spring of 1982 the curator of Colonial National Historical Pari: (CNHP) in Virginia suggested that I consider the development of historical archaeology at Jamestown for the topic of my master's thesis. A study of CNHP in 1982 prepared by staff members of the National Park Service's Harpers' ferry Regional Center had recommended that: An oral history of the Jamestown . excavations should be taped to record the memories of as many archaeologists . as can be located . If Mr. Harrington and Mr. Cotter discuss their methods and goals during their pioneer digs, the Park will have a much better picture of the information which the collections

A facilitator skilled in interpretive planning works with park staff, partners, and outside consultants to prepare a plan that is consistent with other current planning documents. Part 1 of the LRIP establishes criteria against which existing and proposed personal services and media can be measured. It identifies themes, audiences, audience experiences, and issues. Part 2 describes the mix of services and facilities that are necessary to achieve management goals and interpretive mission. It includes implementation charts that plot a course of action, assign responsibilities, and offer a schedule of activity.     The History of the Jamestown Colony: Seventeenth-Century and Modern Interpretations A Senior Honors Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for graduation with research distinction in History in the undergraduate colleges of the Ohio State University By Sarah McBee The Ohio State University at Mansfield June 2009 Project Advisor: Professor Heather Tanner, Department of History Introduction Reevaluating Jamestown On an unexceptional day in December about four hundred years ago, three small ships embarked from an English dock and began the long and treacherous voyage across the Atlantic. The passengers on board envisioned their goals – wealth and discovery, glory and destiny. The promise of a new life hung tantalizingly ahead of them. When they arrived in their new world in May of the next year, they did not know that they were to begin the journey of a nation that would eventually become the United States of America. This summary sounds almost ridiculously idealistic – dream-driven achievers setting out to start over and build for themselves a better world. To the average American citizen, this story appears to be the classic description of the Pilgrims coming to the new world in 1620 seeking religious freedom. But what would the same average American citizen say to the fact that this deceptively idealistic story actually took place almost fourteen years earlier at Jamestown, Virginia? The unfortunate truth is that most people do not know the story of the Jamestown colony, established in 1607.1 Even when people have heard of Jamestown, often it is with a negative connotation. Common knowledge marginally recognizes Jamestown as the colony that predates the Separatists in New England by more than a dozen years, and as the first permanent English settlement in America.

In addition, the study of Jamestown can be implemented into just about every level of social studies. For example, Kindergarten students can study the importance of Pocahontas to the early settlers, the terms near and far as related to the start and finish of the voyage to Jamestown, and the use of inquiry to find out the truth in Disneyʼs movie on this topic. In the 1580’s colonists were sent to Roanoke Island in what is now North Carolina, but within a short time the colonists vanished. In 1606 King James I granted the rights to the Virginia Company of London to try another settlement. The Virginia Company was a group of wealthy Englishmen who wished to invest their money in a profit-making venture. Their motives were both financial and patriotic. They expected to open new lands for exploration, use the resources of the New World for industry and to develop new employment opportunities for English workers. They also hoped to find the same riches that the Spanish had been bringing home from other parts of the New World. The English were still looking for another way to bring spices to England from the Orient, and they planned to convert the Native Americans to Christianity. The investors planned the settlement, purchasing supplies, acquiring the ships, gathering the settlers and choosing the leaders. Under the command of Captain Christopher Newport, 105 men and boys set sail with a crew of 39 in three ships, the Susan Constant, the Godspeed and the Discovery in December 1606. After six stormy weeks in the English Channel, they sailed southward toward the Canary Islands where they replenished their supplies.

    Founder Burial Sites In Virginia Forward This book is presented by the Virginia Society of the Order of Founders and Patriots of America. Virginia burials of male person who resided in Virginia prior to 13 May 1657. Some individuals do not qualify as Founders under the rules of the Order of Founders and Patriots of America. We decided to include their names because they contributed to the history of the Commonwealth of Virginia before 13 May 1657. This document is a work in progress as names will be removed and added as additional references become available. Shadle 16 March 2010 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: Early Modern England; Colonial Virginia; Jamestown; Devil; Fear Copyright 2010, Matthew John Sparacio The Devil in Virginia: Fear in Colonial Jamestown, 1607-1622 Matthew John Sparacio ABSTRACT This study examines the role of emotions – specifically fear – in the development and early stages of settlement at Jamestown. More so than any other factor, the Protestant belief system transplanted by the first settlers to Virginia helps explain the hardships the English encountered in the New World, as well as influencing English perceptions of self and other. Out of this transplanted Protestantism emerged a discourse of fear that revolved around the agency of the Devil in the temporal world. Reformed beliefs of the Devil identified domestic English Catholics and English imperial rivals from Iberia as agents of the diabolical. These fears travelled to Virginia, where the English quickly ʻsatanizedʼ another group, the Virginia Algonquians, based upon misperceptions of native religious and cultural practices. I argue that English belief in the diabolic nature of the Native Americans played a significant role during the “starving time” winter of 1609-1610. In addition to the acknowledged agency of the Devil, Reformed belief recognized the existence of providential actions based upon continued adherence to the Englishʼs nationally perceived covenant with the Almighty.

    JAMESTOWN, Founding of a Nation and the Anglican Communion ...by Rev. Richard W. Davies How did the Anglican Communion begin? The simple answer is to note the beginning of a parish church outside of the British Isles. That answer will take us to Jamestown, Virginia, and the year of our Lord, 1607. In 1603, one of King James I interests was to colonize a new part of the world. The King was encouraged by the Rev. Richard Hakluyt, and priest of the Church of England, as an explorer and geographer. So the King issued letter patent to English businessmen to form a business venture called the Virginia Company (name for Elizabeth I, the “virgin queen.”) and to found a settlement and an English parish in the new world of America. The King named Hakluyt as the rector, and he named an English priest, Robert Hunt, to be his vicar and chaplain to the Virginia Company. Robert Hunt was born about 1560. He had been the vicar of the parish of Reculver in Kent, the historic church which marked the landing of St. Augustine in 597 and the first Christian settlement in England brought from Europe. He later was the Vicar of Heathfield, in Sussex. On December 19, 1606, three ships, Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery left England for the new colony. The journey was storm-tossed and therefore delayed. Hunt almost died from illness, but he continued to minister to the irritable crew and businessmen. Hunt alone was shown respect and trust. On April 19, 1607, the expedition touched American land and they erected a cross, prayed at a point they called Cape Henry.
