Dr. Kürşat YILDIRIM* Öz Türk tarihini iyi anlayabilmek için, Türklerin etrafındaki toplulukların ta- rihini bilmek gerekmektedir. Bunlardan birisi, Ural-Altay topluluğu olan Tun- guzlardır. Tunguzlar üzerine ülkemizde münferit bir çalışma yapılmamıştır. Tunguzların kökenini, yaşadıkları coğrafyayı, kültürlerini, dillerini, kabilele- rini, Türklerle ve Çinlilerle ilişkilerini bilmek, Türk tarihini anlamayı kolaylaş- tıracaktır. Tunguzlarla ilgili araştırmalarımızın ilkinde, Gök-Türkler devrinin kudretli Tunguz topluluğu olan Mohe’ları inceleyeceğiz. Anahtar kelimeler: Tunguzlar, Mohe’lar, Mançurya, Türkler, Çinliler. Studies On Tungus People-I: Mohes Abstract It is necessary to know the history of the groups who surround the Turks, for understanding Turkic history better. One of these groups is Tungus, the Ural-Altai people. There has been no specific study on Tungus people in our country. It will be easy to understand the Turkic history by studying roots, geography, culture, language, tribes, and relations with Turks and China of the Tungus people. In the first paper on Tungus studies, we will examine powerful Mohe people who were one of the Tungus peoples in the time of Gok-Turks. Keywords: Tunguses, Mohe, Manchuria, Turks, Chinese. İlim aleminde Tunguzların neşet ettiği yere dair üç farklı coğrafya zikredil- mekte, etnik ve siyasi bakımlardan farklı yorumlar yapılmaktadır:2 1) Güneyden yani Çin’den geldikleri görüşü: Finli dilbilimci M.A. Castrén’den (1813-1852) sonra birçok araştırmacıya göre Sibirya’daki halk- lar arasındaki Tunguzlar, Amur Irmağı kıyılarına göç etmişlerdir. S.M. Shiro- kogoroff (1889-1934), Amur, Ussuri, Sungari ırmaklarının aktığı topraklarda görülen Tunguzların, Sarı Irmak ve Changjiang (Yangtze; “Uzun Irmak”) ara- sındaki topraklarda yaşarlarken, batıdan gelen Çinlilerin tazyikiyle yerlerin- den olup kuzeydoğuya gittiklerini öne sürmektedir. Bu görüş, üç mesnede dayandırılmaktadır: 1 Pei Huang, “New Light On The Origins Of The Manchus”, Harvard Journal Of Asiatic Studies, Cilt: 50, Sayı: 1, Cambridge 1990, s. 240-242. 2 Gao Kaijun, Tonggusi Zuxi de Xingqi, Zhonghua Shuju Yay., Beijing 2012, s. 27, 28. 10 231_Kursat_Yildirim.indd 10 7.12.2017 12:12:49 AŞT I AR IRM AS A Y LA N R Ü I D 2017 / K KASIM - ARALIK T KÜRŞAT YILDIRIM R D Ü CİLT: 117 SAYI: 231 A T TUNGUZ HALKI ÜZERİNE ARAŞTIRMALAR-I: MOHE’LAR SAYFA: 9-24 i) Kuzeydeki Tunguzların giysileri, kemerleri vb. 2) Batıdan geldikleri görüşü: M. Vasiliyeviç’in temel görüşüne göre Tun- guzlar batıdaki Baykal Gölü kıyılarından gelmişlerdir. P. Schmidt ise Tunguz- ların asıl yurdunun batıdaki Selenge Irmağı’nın aktığı topraklar olduğunu öne sürmektedir. 3) Yerli halk oldukları görüşü: Sovyet araştırmacı A.P.

  • In Koguryo Dynasty the State-Formation History Starts from B
International Journal of Korean History(Vol.6, Dec.2004) 1 History of Koguryŏ and China’s Northeast Asian Project 1Park Kyeong-chul * Introduction The Koguryŏ Dynasty, established during the 3rd century B.C. around the Maek tribe is believed to have begun its function as a centralized entity in the Northeast Asia region. During the period between 1st century B.C. and 1st century A.D. aggressive regional expansion policy from the Koguryŏ made it possible to overcome its territorial limitations and weak economic basis. By the end of the 4th century A.D., Koguryŏ emerged as an empire that had acquired its own independent lebensraum in Northeast Asia. This research paper will delve into identifying actual founders of the Koguryŏ Dynasty and shed light on their lives prior to the actual establishment of the Dynasty. Then on, I will analyze the establishment process of Koguryŏ Dynasty. Thereafter, I will analyze the history of Koguryŏ Dynasty at three different stages: the despotic military state period, the period in which Koguryŏ emerged as an independent empire in Northeast Asia, and the era of war against the Sui and Tang dynasty. Upon completion of the above task, I will illustrate the importance of Koguryŏ history for Koreans. Finally, I attempt to unearth the real objectives why the Chinese academics are actively promoting the Northeast Asian Project. * Professor, Dept. of Liberal Arts, Kangnam University 2 History of Koguryŏ and China’s Northeast Asian Project The Yemaek tribe and their culture1 The main centers of East Asian culture in approximately 2000 B.C. were China - by this point it had already become an agrarian society - and the Mongol-Siberian region where nomadic cultures reign.

Memories from Abroad: Han 漢 Chinese and Nomadic Heritage in Korean and Japanese Archaeological Contexts Barbara SEYOCK Introduction The centuries between 100 BCE to 300 CE brought about major changes in material culture, social structures, and cross-cultural trade relations for the Korean peninsula and the Japanese archipelago. One major catalyst for these developments was the establishment of four Chinese commanderies in the north of the Korean peninsula in the year 108 BCE, as we can learn from Chinese documentary history. Three of them were vacated soon after their establishment due to constant local resistance; another one, Daifang 帶方, was installed early in the third century, but left no verifiable archaeo- logical traces. The Lelang 樂浪 commandery, however, has left a treasure house of remains for archaeologists to reveal.1 It remained in existence until the early fourth century CE and transmitted Han 漢 material culture and lifestyle to the peninsula and beyond. Iron objects, and also bronze items, both showing a close relationship to the neighbouring Liaoning 遼寧 culture, had been present in the northwest of the Korean peninsula from the fourth to third centuries BCE onwards, as can be seen for example at the Yongyŏndong 龍淵洞 site near the river Yalu (Yalu jiang 鴨綠江, kor. Amrokgang 압록강) in North-P’yŏngan Province.2 However, the impulse for the rapid spread of the techniques required for bronze and iron manufacture throughout the whole of the peninsula and further south crossing the Korea Strait to the Japanese archipelago is closely connected to the manifestation of Han-Chinese culture on the peninsula itself.

Ussuriysk, Nekrasova St. 35, Russia Tel: 7-4234-346787 E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The state of Parhae (in Chinese reading- Bohai) existed in what is now Russian Maritime region, North Korea and Northeastern China from the late 7th to the early 10th centuries AD. Parhae played a major role at relations between Silla, Japan and Chinese empire Tang. Of course, Parhae was subjected to important cultural influence from other countries and in some cases followed their ritual and diplomatic tradition. Many specialists from Japan, Russia, China and both Korean states have done research of different aspects of Parhae history and culture. However, many scholars have not paid attention to influence of ritual system at international relation of Parhae. In opinion of author, Parhae and Silla had antagonistic relation during 200 years because they could not agree about their respective vis-à-vis status each other. For example, Silla did not want to recognize Parhae as a sovereign state, which by recognized and independence state from China, but Silla was vassal of empire Tang. This article critically analyzes relation between Parhae and Silla for of the origin of conflict of between countries using Russian and Korean materials (materials by South and North Korean works). Keywords: History, Parhae (Bohai), Silla, Korea, Khitan 1. Situation before establishment of Bohai state and earliest periods of Bohai and Silla relations Parhae (in Chinese and Russian readings – Bohai, in Japanese reading- Bokkai) can be seen as a first state which existed in what is now Russian Far East, and this alone makes Parhae historically important.

Chapter 6 Tang and Korea: Expansion and Withdrawal While the Turks, as the dominant contemporary nomad power in Mongolia, were inescapably a major concern in Chinese foreign relations until the mid-eighth century, Chinese rulers from Emperor Wen of the Sui dynasty to Gaozong of the Tang dynasty were also obsessed with the con quest of Koguryo. They launched massive and costly military expeditions against Koguryo on a scale unprecedented in previous Sino-Korean rela tions. The wars with Koguryo are a prime example of the use of aggres sive force as an instrument of Chinese foreign policy. Although ultimately successful tmder Tang Gaozong in the sense that Koguryo was destroyed, the wars were of questionable long-term benefit to China and instead in advertently contributed to the rise of a unified Korean state which deferred to but was essentially independent of China. As previous scholars have shown, there were pragmatic as well as ideological reasons for the continued interest of the early Tang rulers in Korea. Pulleyblank holds that the presence of strong separatist sentiments in the Hebei region made the Tang court at Chang’an feel threatened by the possibility of close relations between Hebei and its neighbor, Kogu- ryo.^ Somers considers Tang Taizong’s campaigns into the border regions of the Northeast as a necessary step for the extension of imperial rule into the North China Plain and as an important coercive measure for the full consolidation of dynastic power.^ Wechsler concludes that Tang feared that Koguryo would unify the whole Korean peninsula, and so it wanted to keep Korea divided and prevent its alliance with other non-Chinese in eastern Manchuria and in Japan.

Specifi cally, the author exam- ines the debate of prose (wen) and accuracy (zhi) in the realisation of the translated texts. The early translations of Buddhist texts into Chinese were cooperative efforts between Buddhist monks from Central Asia and Chinese. One of the problems that arose with the translation was the question of literary style. There were those that valued prose (wen), and emphasised beautiful literary expression. There were those that valued quality (zhi), that is to say transla- tions that accurately conveyed the meaning of the original text, and these two factions disagreed over the how the texts were to be translated. In the beginning, the Chinese valued literary prose over accuracy while the foreign monks valued the accuracy of the translation. With the passage of time, however, and the increasing number of Buddhist works translated, a remark- able phenomenon occurred in which the Chinese Buddhist monks came to value accuracy, and the non-Chinese monks came to value the quality of the prose.
