Philippine Species of Mesocyclops (Crustacea: Copepoda) as a Biological Control Agent of Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) Cecilia Mejica Panogadia-Reyes*#, Estrella Irlandez Cruz** and Soledad Lopez Bautista*** *Department of Biology, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Ermita, Manila, MM, Philippines **Research Institute for Tropical Medicine, Alabang, Muntinlupa, MM, Philippines ***Department of Medical Technology, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Ermita, Manila, MM, Philippines Abstract The predatory capacity of two local populations of Mesocyclops aspericornis (Daday) and Mesocyclops ogunnus species were evaluated, for the first time in the Philippines, as a biological control agent for Aedes aegypti (L) mosquitoes. Under laboratory conditions, Mesocyclops attacked the mosquito first instar larvae by the tail, side and head. The mean of first instar larvae consumed by M. aspericornis and M. ogunnus were 23.96 and 15.00, respectively. An analysis of the variance showed that there was a highly significant difference between the mean number of first instar mosquito larvae consumed by M. aspericornis and by M. ogunnus, which indicated that the former is a more efficient predator of dengue mosquito larvae. The results of the small-scale field trials showed that the mean number of surviving larvae in experimental drums was 63.10 and in control drums was 202.95. The Student t-test of means indicated that there was a significant difference between the mean number of surviving larvae in the drums with and without M. aspericornis. The findings indicated that M. aspericornis females were good biological control agents, for they destroyed/consumed about two-thirds of the wild dengue mosquito larvae population. In total, we have registered ~2,500 ecological interactions from ~500 publications, spanning the last 150 years. -

1 Contributors November Southwest Climate Outlook Ben McMahan Precipitation and Temperature: October was relatively wet and cool across the Southwest. Precipitation ranged from SWCO Editor; Assistant Research Scientist average to much-above average in New Mexico and from above average to much-above average in Arizona (Fig. 1a). (CLIMAS, Institute of the Environment) Temperatures were much cooler than normal, ranging from below average to average in Arizona and from below to Mike Crimmins above average in New Mexico (Fig. 1b). Year-to-date precipitation is highly variable across the region, ranging from UA Extension Specialist record driest in the drought-stricken Four Corners region to much-above average in parts of southern Arizona impacted Dave Dubois by heavy tropical storm precipitation (Fig. 2a). Corresponding author: Caio Ceza da Silva Nunes, [email protected] Abstract Dinoflagellates display great diversity in tropical regions and play an important role in the complex microbial food webs of marine and brackish environments. The goal of this study is to identify planktonic dinoflagellates and their distribution in the estuary of the Maraú River, Camamu Bay, state of Bahia, in a region with increasing use of shellfish farming. Samples were carried out monthly from August 2006 to July 2007 at four stations along the estuary. Plankton was sampled with a 20 μm mesh net. We identified 20 dinoflagellate species. The greatest species richness was ob- served in the genera Protoperidinium (five spp.), Tripos (four spp.), and Prorocentrum (three spp.). Based on literature, six species were classified as potentially harmful: Akashiwo sanguinea, Dinophysis caudata, Gonyaulax spinifera, Prorocentrum micans, Scrippsiella cf. acuminata, and Tripos furca. NAWPA COMMITTEE MARINE WILDERNESS & PROTECTED AREAS WORKING GROUP CASE STUDY OF MPA ESTABLISHMENT – CABO PULMO NATIONAL PARK (BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR, MEXICO) KEY MESSAGE Cabo Pulmo, example of coordinated local and government stewardship, outstanding demonstration site of how a marine protected area contributes to the recovery of fish biomass BENEFITS • The MPA protects the northern-most coral reef formation of the eastern Pacific Ocean. • The MPA harness the efforts of government and community to conserve 7,111 hectares of coral reef. • Outstanding example of how a marine reserve contributes to an increase of fish biomass. • Local community changed from fisheries to ecotourism as main economic activity. • International recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2005) and Ramsar Site (2008). CRITICAL STEPS • Local fishers began to see a dramatic decrease in their captures and adult fish sizes. • Working with the local community, the Federal Government declares the area National Park in 1995. • Local community together with NGOs and Federal Government develops ecotourism activities. • The Cabo Pulmo National Park Management Plan was published in the Official Gazette (Diario Oficial de la Federación) in 2009. LESSONS LEARNED Cabo Pulmo is an example and demonstration of how communities after having realized that fisheries resources are limited, organize themselves and switch from one economic activity (fisheries) to other (ecotourism) successfully. Furthermore, it shows how this organization harnessed different stakeholders into action to promote and help de Government to formalize the creation of the Marine Protected Area. As social actors and civil society organizations dedicated to secur- ing the future of Mexico’s natural heritage, our deep concern for this fact led us to reflect on the fundamental aspects of this loss, which is dra- matically shrinking the natural wealth that is vital to our development and survival. -

Oct 31, 2018 Weather Update A strong high pressure system building out west brings offshore flow and above average temperatures to Central California through the week. An exiting low to the south brings slight cooling from northern Mexico and to the southwestern desert regions along with strong winds to Southern California. Central Mexico will see mostly dry conditions and seasonably warm temperatures into next week. A frontal system moves into northern Florida late this week with rain and cooler temperatures into the weekend. A couple of stronger systems look to follow early next week. Market Alerts Apples: The smaller size fruit in all varieties is extremely limited as suppliers are not risking opening up controlled atmosphere rooms to run bins in order to cover orders. Subbing into larger sizes will be the theme this year. Bell Peppers (Eastern): Supplies continues to be tight. Berries (Blackberries): Supplies are still limited due to the storms in Mexico last week. Availability is better in Texas than California. We are seeing split markets.
