His researches seem to them a waste of time and energy. Interest in ancestors, love of family and kindred, those subtle questions of race, origin, even of life itself, which they involve, are quite beyond their com prehension. They live only in the present, care nothing for the past and little for the future; for " he who cares not whence he cometh, cares not whither he goeth." When such persons are approached with questions of ancestry, they retire to their stronghold of apathy; and the querist learns, without diffi culty, that whether their ancestors were vile or illustrious, virtuous or vicious, or whether, indeed, they ever had any, is to them a matter of supreme indifference. -

COTTON MATHER’S WONDERS OF THE INVISIBLE WORLD: AN AUTHORITATIVE EDITION by PAUL M. WISE Under the direction of Reiner Smolinski ABSTRACT In Wonders of the Invisible World, Cotton Mather applies both his views on witchcraft and his millennial calculations to events at Salem in 1692. Although this infamous treatise served as the official chronicle and apologia of the 1692 witch trials, and excerpts from Wonders of the Invisible World are widely anthologized, no annotated critical edition of the entire work has appeared since the nineteenth century. This present edition seeks to remedy this lacuna in modern scholarship, presenting Mather’s seventeenth-century text next to an integrated theory of the natural causes of the Salem witch panic. The likely causes of Salem’s bewitchment, viewed alongside Mather’s implausible explanations, expose his disingenuousness in writing about Salem. Thinking Outside the Bay: The New York Ministers and the Salem Witch Trials Christian Kinsella History 2090 Professor Mary Beth Norton December 6, 2010 Kinsella 2 Although New York is today considered the leading city of the United States, if not the world, its first hundred years of history have long been neglected in American schools—eclipsed by the ever-popular topics of Jamestown, Plymouth, the Puritans, and of course Salem. It is safe to assume that almost all ten year olds can identify Squanto and not Peter Stuyvesant. This early focus on English established colonies evolves into a general absence of colonial New York— besides the name New Amsterdam—in the general public’s mindset. The importance of understanding that hinge of land between the two early English plantations in the New World is not only an end to itself, but also a crucial part of understanding the other regions of colonial America. In the Salem witch trials, for example, letters from New York ministers in response to questions concerning the trials and witchcraft helped add another layer to what had decidedly been a New England affair. The October 1692 letters provided much needed outside opinions to the trials and brought a significant climax to a wave of growing criticism within New England itself. They were an integral part of the ending of the proceedings in Massachusetts by Governor Phips and influential in his vindication of those already condemned. The involvement of the New York ministry near the time of the Essex County witch trials’ ending came unexpectedly. Why did a staunchly Puritan community of faith decide to consult Dutch and French Calvinist ministers and even an Anglican chaplain from another colony? To help answer such questions, one must understand what was going on in New England at the time, and who the New York ministers were. -

McPherson George Henry Davis ‘86 Professor of American History Princeton University President 2003 Photo by: David Kelly Crow James McPherson: Historian in the Academy and in the World I first met Jim McPherson on a hot July day in 1986 on the Antietam battle field in Maryland. We were both participating in a British-produced television documentary on the Civil War, The Divided Union, which was designed, in part, to take the views of scholars to a wider audience. Meeting him in such a place and for such a purpose was particularly appropriate, perhaps, in view of Jim’s career and scholarly work. Of course, long before 1986 and Antietam, I already knew of Jim as a notable historian. Born in 1936 in Valley City, North Dakota, Jim received his BA degree from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, in 1958. He went on to Johns Hopkins University, where he studied with C. Vann Woodward and received the PhD in 1963. Appointed an instructor at Princeton University in 1962, he has remained on the faculty there ever since, rising through the ranks to become full professor in 1972. He is currently George Henry Davis ‘86 Professor of American History at the university. Jim began his career as a student of abolition and race. His first book, The Struggle for Equality: Abolitionists and the Negro in the Civil War and Reconstruction (Princeton University Press, 1964), made a signal contribution to the understanding of abolitionists’ attitudes toward race and their influence on both the cause of emancipation and the resulting thirteenth, fourteenth, and fif teenth amendments to the Constitution. -

That two such remarkable and well-known schools of higher learning even exist at all represents a story both stirring and complex that developed over the course of the early nineteenth century cumulating in the passage of the 1862 Morrill Land Grant Act. -

FOX Cornell University Collection of Regional History F Cornell University is considered as an integral part of the surrounding region, and its development as a part of the history I of that region, then its collecting of regional material began with its inception. At that time, its founders and trustees placed the minutes of their first meetings to one side for preservation. Al- though these men had no thought of the regional value of the min- utes,- letters, petitions, memoranda, and odd scraps which were tied neatly in packets with legal tape, they did think that the papers rep- resented an unusual and possibly great event which was taking place in and would benefit the people, particularly the common people, of central New York. None of them felt more strongly about this than did Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White. The former considered his role in the founding of Cornell University as one of the greatest honors ever bestowed upon a man, the culmination of all his successes which were reached through grievous toil and suf- fering.1 President White wrote, "Night & day I have worked for this University — I am willing to give my life & all I have for it." 2 Both were building and sacrificing with tremendous enjoyment for posterity, and both felt themselves to be rather unusual men, but both also had a sober respect for the judgment of posterity. -

Eric Foner President American Historical Association 2000 Eric Foner Eric foner, as one of his many admirers writes, is “one of nature’s com municators, a man whose vigorous prose style is matched by an engaging and voluble presence.” This apt description best captures the qualities that nuke him a premier raconteur of the American experience: his intellectual vigor, passion for history, tremendous literary and oratorical talents, and infectious energy. His versatility as a scholar and his driving commitment to create a truly inclusive and complex version of American history have given him an enviable and unique stature in academia and public life. A historian whose many publications reflect different ways of writing history and who has received nearly every distinction that his profession has to offer, he is, to paraphrase a hoary old saying, the master of all historical arts and jack of none. Born in 1943 to a family whose reputation for scholarship and activism is legendary, Eric foner imbibed the lessons of intellectual duty and social purpose at an early age. His father and uncle, Jack and Philip foner, were pioneers in labor and African American history and his other uncles and brother participated in the labor and civil rights movements. His mother, a high school art teacher, confronted Eric’s primary school principal about an illustration in his third-grade history text that showed happy slaves. Brought up in a family where intellectual and political issues were the stuff of everyday conversations, he absorbed his parents’ devotion to racial jus tice and to a broader, inclusive view of American history. -

Thesis Advisor: Alison F. Games, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Scholars of English expansion have rightly located the roots of the English Atlantic world in the turmoil and transitions of the seventeenth century, but they have too often concentrated on the narrow and premature definition of early modern England as a Protestant nation and empire. While the seventeenth-century Anglo-Atlantic remained predominantly populated and ruled by Protestants, it was not a Protestant empire. This dissertation focuses on identifying individual Catholic inhabitants—broadly envisioned to encompass migrants from the British Isles, other European settlers, enslaved Africans, and American converts—to shed light on the diverse religious constitution of the English Atlantic world. It asks what happened to those migrants and settlers who contradicted the dominant religious and political identity of England and English global expansion and seeks to better understand how England and the English colonies became a Protestant world over the course of the seventeenth century. Five thematic chapters stitch together evidence from a range of interdisciplinary sources —from narrative accounts to colonial records and archaeological evidence—to recover and reconstruct the lived experience of Catholic inhabitants of the English colonies.
