Who Was Onesheet.Indd With over 30 titles, and more each year, Penguin’s Who Was? series is a great classroom resource. Each Who Was? book offers a detailed account of a famous fi gure’s life and historical period. From artists to astronauts, Who Was? covers them all! Use these activities to enrich your class’s biography unit: ✎ As students read about their subject, ask them to keep a timeline of that person’s life. When was that person born? When did he/she die? Did he/she ever marry? If he/she were a political fi gure, how long was his/her period of power? ✎ Ask students to draw a map of their subject’s travels. They can trace an explorer’s path or outline the borders of ruler’s empire. If their person did not travel much, encourage them to sketch a picture of that person’s home or town. ✎ Each of the Who Was? covers is a caricature of the biography’s subject. After defi ning ‘caricature,’ ask students to draw or paint a caricature of someone they think is important, whether it is a family member or a current celebrity. ✎ Why did each student pick their specifi c historical fi g u r e ? For an essay topic, encourage students to write about the traits they most admire in their subject. What traits do they think they share with their person? ✎ At the end of the biography unit, encourage students to dress as their historical subject and deliver a 1-3 minute speech in the manner or character of that person.     Annie Oakley Topic Guide for Chronicling America (http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov) Introduction Annie Oakley (1860-1926) was an American sharpshooter and exhibition shooter born in Darke County, Ohio, as Phoebe Ann Mosey. When she was five, her father died, and Annie learned to trap, shoot and hunt by age eight to help support her family. In 1875 (though some sources say it was in 1881), Annie met her future husband, Frank E. Butler, at the Baughman & Butler shooting act in Cincinnati, while beating him in a shooting contest. They were married a year later, and in 1885, they joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West where she was given the nickname “Little Sure Shot.” Considered America’s first female star, Oakley traveled all over the United States and Europe showing off her skills. Oakley set shooting records into her sixties, and also did philanthropic work for women’s rights and other causes. In 1925, she died in Greenville, Ohio. Important Dates . August 13, 1860: Annie Oakley is born Phoebe Ann Mosey in Darke County, Ohio. November 1875: Oakley defeats Frank E. Butler in a shooting contest. The pair marries a year later. 1885: Oakley and Butler join Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. 1889: Oakley travels to France to perform in the Paris Exposition. 1901: Oakley is injured in a train accident but recovers and returns to show business. 1912-1917: Oakley and Butler retire temporarily and reside in Cambridge, Maryland. 1917: Oakley and Butler move to North Carolina and return to public life. 1922: Oakley and Butler are injured in a car accident, but Oakley performs again a year or so later.

    NORMAN K DENZIN Sacagawea’s Nickname1, or The Sacagawea Problem The tropical emotion that has created a legendary Sacajawea awaits study...Few others have had so much sentimental fantasy expended on them. A good many men who have written about her...have obviously fallen in love with her. Almost every woman who has written about her has become Sacajawea in her inner reverie (DeVoto, 195, p. 618; see also Waldo, 1978, p. xii). Anyway, what it all comes down to is this: the story of Sacagawea...can be told a lot of different ways (Allen, 1984, p. 4). Many millions of Native American women have lived and died...and yet, until quite recently, only two – Pocahantas and Sacagawea – have left even faint tracings of their personalities on history (McMurtry, 001, p. 155). Anderson EDITOR'S NOTE The United States Mint has announced the design for a new dollar coin bearing a conceptual likeness of Sacagawea on the front and the American eagle on the back. It will replace and be about the same size as the current Susan B. Anthony dollar but will be colored gold and have an edge distinct from the quarter. Irving W. Anderson has provided this biographical essay on Sacagawea, the Shoshoni Indian woman member of the Lewis and Clark expedition, as background information prefacing the issuance of the new dollar. THE RECORD OF the 1804-06 "Corps of Volunteers on an Expedition of North Western Discovery" (the title Lewis and Clark used) is our nation's "living history" legacy of documented exploration across our fledgling republic's pristine western frontier. It is a story written in inspired spelling and with an urgent sense of purpose by ordinary people who accomplished extraordinary deeds. Unfortunately, much 20th-century secondary literature has created lasting though inaccurate versions of expedition events and the roles of its members. Among the most divergent of these are contributions to the exploring enterprise made by its Shoshoni Indian woman member, Sacagawea, and her destiny afterward. The intent of this text is to correct America's popular but erroneous public image of Sacagawea by relating excerpts of her actual life story as recorded in the writings of her contemporaries, people who actually knew her, two centuries ago.
