Dunlop Systems and Components: Steeped in history, braced for the future For a story as remarkable as the Dunlop one, it needed a setting that reflected the company’s history of invention, innovation, industry and resolve. Coventry, though better known by most as a city pummelled by the Luftwaffe, and more recently as home to a football team whose fortunes have crumbled alarmingly, a scratch at the surface reveals a place with breath-taking history. It was chosen as a stronghold for tactical Roman military bases, housed a prison for Royalist detractors during the English civil war, and pioneered the industrial world in ribbon weaving and watch-making. During the last decade of the 19th century it was leading the pack in yet another industry, bicycle manufacture. It is during this period that a quite extraordinary Scotsman arrived on the city’s doorsteps from Belfast, with an invention that would change the course of transport history forever. His name was John Boyd Dunlop. Inspired by his son’s complaints that his tricycle hurt his bottom when riding over cobbles, Dunlop set about making a tyre, that rather than being made from solid, hard rubber, was instead made with a thinner material, and inflated with air. And thus, the world was presented with pneumatic tyres, by far the most ground-breaking wheel-based discovery since the first ancient Mesopotamian attached two vaguely circular pieces of stone to the underside of a makeshift carriage. Before long, the Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company was born and from here, the company, under its various guises, not only flourished but did so shattering records along the way. -

The Announcement On March 2, 1970 Sir Reay Geddes and Mr. Leopoldo Pirelli, the respective leaders of tire manufacturers Dunlop and Pirelli, each sent shareholders a letter with a very similar content, informing recipients that negotiations for a merger between the two corporations were at an advanced stage. In fact, by December extraordinary assemblies at each of the companies had officially decided to approve the merger between the two groups. The Pirelli Dunlop Union from this legal act was born a multinational enterprise that ranked number 3 in the rubber industry (behind American giants, Goodyear and Firestone). If in the early 70s Goodyear had a turnover of almost 3 billion dollars and Firestone could vaunt one of 2.1 billion, Dunlop-Pirelli’s combined turnover of slightly more than 2 billion preceded those of General Tyre (1 billion) and Michelin (900 million). The Anglo-Italian group employed 178,000 persons (76,000 were within Pirelli and the remaining 102,000 were with Dunlop). Dunlop-Pirelli was a global company present in all five continents. In the letters sent to shareholders in March 1970, Pirelli and Geddes had written that in the late 60s their companies results were to be considered satisfactory but in a climate of harsh international competition they had to do much more in terms of rate of growth and geographical and product diversification. -

This economic history and examination of the rubber products manufacturing industry in Peninsular Malaysia contributes to the subject of resource-based industrialization in the field of development studies. The development of the industry is traced from the 1920s to 2005 when the Second Industrial Master Plan came to an end. The findings are that local interests control 80 per cent of the industry, with foreign direct investment in the remaining 20 per cent, either as subsidiary companies of overseas manufacturers or in joint ventures with Malaysian investors. The industry has a dualistic structure, with foreign-owned and joint venture companies typically being more heavily capitalized and employing a larger workforce than wholly Malaysian-owned companies. Foreign and joint venture enterprises are more likely to export a greater volume of production than local firms. -

Blanchflower NBER Working Paper No. 11911 January 2006 JEL No. J4 ABSTRACT On almost all measures of physical health, Scots fare worse than residents of any other region of the UK and often worse than the rest of Europe. Deaths from chronic liver disease and lung cancer are particularly prevalent in Scotland. The self-assessed wellbeing of Scots is lower than that of the English or Welsh, even after taking into account any differences in characteristics. Scots also suffer from higher levels of self-assessed depression or phobia, accidental death and suicide than those in other parts of Great Britain. This result is particularly driven by outcomes in Strathclyde and is consistent with the high scores for other measures of social deprivation in this area.
