  • Princetonian Long Time Obama Aide and Long Time Writer of Classmate News: Chris Lu '88
The Daily Princetonian Long time Obama aide and long time writer of classmate news: Chris Lu '88 By Jacob Donnelly • Staff Writer • April 20, 2014 On April 5, 1988, at 2:27 a.m., Christopher P. Lu ’88 put the finishing touches on his senior thesis, wrapping up the cover letter to his cheekily-titled research project, “The Morning After: Press Coverage of Presidential Primaries 1972–1984.” The subject of birth was evidently preoccupying him at the time. “In many ways, writing a senior thesis is like having a baby,” he wrote. “The idea for the paper is conceived one day unexpectedly and then gestates inside one’s head for nine months … I now submit this thesis like a proud father, confident that it will stand on its own two feet as a piece of scholarly research.” However, Lu, this year’s Baccalaureate speaker who is a former White House Cabinet Secretary and the current Deputy Secretary of the Department of Labor, had no idea then that his forays into politics and government, rather than over, were only in their embryonic stage. He would remain attached to Princeton as well, serving on the board of trustees of The Daily Princetonian, helping the University’s trustees navigate Washington and diligently keeping up with classmates in order to feature them in the pages of the Princeton Alumni Weekly. “We weren’t totally uncool:” At Princeton Jane Martin ’89, a former sports editor for the ‘Prince,’ remembers Lu as a senior news editor for the ‘Prince,’ a fellow member of Cloister Inn and a good friend.

From: s.22 Sent: Monday, February 6, 2017 10:56 AM To: OfficeofthePremier, Office PREM:EX Subject: We want you to win next election. Stories like this coming out is going to cost votes Premier. http://www.castanetnet/edition/news-story-188045-3-.htm#188045 From: s'22 Sent: Tuesday, February 7, 2017 6:18 AM To: OfficeofthePremier, Office PREM:EX; Minister, MCF MCF:EX Cc: [email protected] Subject: Alex Gervais death Hi: I am appalled by the lies and controversies your government created with Mary Ellen Turpel Lafond, when she presented the same concerns about your government actually doing very little to address the issues of children and youth in care of your so called ministry/government. To say that this report is balanced, is a slap in the face of the public that pays your wages with our taxes dollars. I follow the issues of youth and children in care and what you have done is wrong, cruel and borderline criminal. Throughout Gordon and your government we have had just lies, lies, and lies regarding this issue. On top of it you tried to make Mary Ellen Turpel Lafond look bad. We the public know better. You will be out of the premier's office and MS. Cadieux will be gone (thank God), however the next premier will have to deal with many permanent crisis created by your heartless decisions and narrow minded actions. As a member of this society I am short of words to express myself. Upon reading about this young man's death I could not help but cry.

  • Message from the President
Message from the President Congratulations to the events committee for hosting the Women in Media panel discussion in February. It was both inspiring and insightful. Member Bridgitte Anderson did a fantastic job moderating and exploring the constantly changing roles women hold in journalism today. Like many of you, yet another virtual meeting at the end of a long day is sometimes the last thing I feel I need, but this session left me invigorated and thankful yet again for being a member of this community of incredible women. Virtual meetings offer us the ability to create sessions that are more accessible and frankly less consuming of our time as we search for ways to connect. I will be at the front of the line cheering when it is deemed safe to meet in person once again – and I hope the option of grabbing a glass of my favourite beverage, getting comfy and clicking a link to join powerful discussions will not disappear completely. That is the reason I jumped at the chance to sign up for IWF Global’s 2021 Virtual Cornerstone Conference, Change in the Face of Challenge, March 25th with Behind the Scenes (March 24) and Dine Arounds (March 18) all artfully scheduled to accommodate global time zones. Sessions will also be available following the conference for all those who register. IWF Global has opened up the events portal to highlight all the global forum activities that are open to members. Please check them out and register if you are interested in attending. Finally, further in this newsletter you will find a call out for volunteers to build out small group engagement sessions, based on members’ passions and interests.

  • Gobi: from “Space of Flows” to a Space of People and Places
Gobi: From “Space of Flows” to a Space of People and Places Relational Analysis, Critique, and Proposal for an Alter-Urbanization Guan Min and Andrew Stokols I. Gobi: Space of Flows (Relational analysis) The Gobi Desert is being remade into a space of flows between China and Europe. This is the result of two primary forces: 1. The geopolitical strategy of China to more closely integrate European, Central Asian, and ultimately Middle Eastern economies into its own with the goal of creating an integrated economic zone. 2. The calculations of multinational electronics and automotive companies that are beginning to ship products between China and Europe using overland rail routes that are now faster than sea routes. China is investing billions in new roads, rail, inland ‘ports’, logistics centers, and other infrastructure designed to realize this political project. Logistics companies and electronic firms are also partnering with state-owned rail companies in China, Russia, and Kazakhstan to reduce tariffs, customs processing times, and other bureaucratic obstacles to free trade. These new infrastructures and associated urban nodes are facilitating increased trade flows in products between Europe and China, as well as the increased extraction of raw materials like oil and natural gas. Additionally, the growth of new connective infrastructures are facilitating plans for export zones at border ports and in certain Western Chinese cities like Xi’an, Urumqi, and Lanzhou. These new cities are predicated on attracting investment from high-tech companies and facilitating a transfer of manufacturing and industry from China’s East to China’s west. But until now, most of the growth of manufacturing in the West has been that related to extraction, including oil, coal, and mining.

  • Pression from a William Shakespeare Play Used to Convey That Even the Meekest Or Most Docile of Creatures Will Retaliate Or Get Revenge If Pushed Too Far
THE WORM IS TURNING A documentary film by Hilary Bain and Åsa Mark Total run time 103 min • Aspect ratio: widescreen • DVD video Website and Trailer: thewormisturning.com Publicity contact: [email protected] + 1510-408-9892 [USA] + 612-8006-1705 [Australia] THE WORM IS TURNING starts in Punjab, India. After 40 years of chemical agriculture introduced as the Green Revolution, we see a dying, poisoned land: there are fields as far as the eye can see of dead soil, no trees, no birds, no insects, and polluted water and air. “Chemical farming is a system of killing all other life, to aid the growth of one single plant.” 2 Dr Amar Singh Azad, a pediatrician and community health specialist says; ”The toxins have penetrated so deep that they are affecting every aspect of life. We are already in the very active process of slow death. And this phenomenon is happening in other parts of the world also but in Punjab particularly, it’s very intense, very intense!” A train that leaves every evening from Bathinda nick-named the “cancer train". It carries patients to Bikaner Rajasthan as there is no free treatment in Punjab. 3 PUSHING PEOPLE OFF THE LAND The plan is to continue the corporatization of agriculture in India by eliminating most of India's farmers, there are 600 million still on the land, by making them corporate farm labor, or pushing them into cities, as was done America after World War 2. 4 THE EFFICIENCY MYTH “Our agricultural systems have developed in ways that have increased, very significantly the dependency of farming on fossil energy.” says Olivier De Schutter, former Special UN Rapporteur on the Right to Food.
