• SECRETARY'S REPORT.

The Club continues in a flou rish ing state, both financially and in the nu mber and quality of the plants exchanged.

Mr. Meldrum has again kindly marked the Circulating Catalo gues, and it is hoped that, as these Catalogues circulate, members will note the wants of the Club. Sending in Oblata lists has proved of value, but for the next Exchange, it will be well for members to send a list of z'1zlresting plants in addition to th ose indicated as wanted on the Circulating Catalogues.

Our present Hepatic Catalogue is now quite out of elate, and Mr. Macvicar has kindly promised to prepare a new Cata lo gue for the Club, which will be in touch with the best Continental and

American work. It will be based on Schi!fner 's arrangement in

" Engler and Prantl."

This Catalogue will not differ much from our present Catalogue, which is based upon Spruce's work. \V hen finished, it is proposed to issue it to members as a Census IIep:ttic Catalogue.

l\1r. Macvicar will do the '' Census " part for Scotland, and all members interested are invited to co-ope ra te in doing the "Census" part for , Wales, and Ireland, as fa r as our present kn ow ledge extends.

It would be a great advance also, if the Club could undertake the preparation of a Census l\Ioss Catalogue. The Club Rule Il. gives the working up of the County distribution as one of the objects of the Club, and no doubt a very important object.

Mr. 1\Ieldrum has now finished his two years' work as Distributer, and I am sure all members will wish to thank him very much for the t rying work he has done so well for th e goo d of the Club.

lVIr. D. A. ]ones, F.L.S., Rock House, Harlech, has kindly under taken the duti es of Distributer for the next two years. Oblata lists and Catalogues should be sent to him late in November, or early in December. WM. INGHAM, Ho n. SuretarJ'· THE TENTH ANNUAL REPORT ot· THe

Moss EXCHANGE CLUB, l905.

DISTRIBUTER'S REPORT.

This year parcels have been received from 27 members, and other z s::nt in catalogues only.

Although mistakes are not yet entirely absent, more than one of the Referees r::mark on rhe rarity of wrongly ·named specimens in their parcels, and on the satisfactory condition of the packets as a "hole. The Circulating Catalogues have again been marked to be sent round. It should be remembered that the numbers marked, though fairly correct just now, can only bt:: considered approximate by next distribution, as catalogues which have not come in this year may be sent next year, and some members may re-mark their catalogues, or retain on their list species which thcy ha\'e already received. Hence, when possible, one or two more than the number marked may generally be offered-the Distributt:r can strike otr any unnecessary excess. A number of species, wanted by only one member, have been marked as not wanted at all, as species that will supply the wants of a number are more to be desired than those wanted only by a single person. Since Ilepaticre are not examined by the Referee unless a 1 minimum of 3 packets from the same gathering are sent, think it desirable that all who send in Hcpaticre should endeavour to meet this requirement. Where less than 3 arc required, the surplusagc can be handt:d over to Section 11. 179

The same gentlemen as last year acted as Referees, and to them all members of the Club arc deeply indebted for their much-valued labours.

On the expiry of my term of otlkc as Distributer, I desire to say that my duties, if for a brief period somewhat monopolising, have nevertheless atrorded me much interest and pleasure, and I trust that, where I have fa iled to satisfactorily perform these duties, my li1ilurc may be looked on with leniency.

R. H. MELDRDI, Distributer. 180

If there is anything in the var. at all, the form of the inner pcrich. bracts seems to be the only definite character to go by, and I suppose, therefore, this must be referred there. l\fy preference, however would be to label it 'Per. bracts of the form of v. All the packe::ts sent out are F pus ilia with the ridges on the spores less ele\'ated than normal. l find F. pusill a grows on the vertical sandy sides of pools and ditches, much more in the shade than F. ens/ala, which latter seems most at home in the open stubble field, usually in company with INccia sorocarpn. In examining Hepatics, l\lr. l\Iac\'icar gives what 1 find a very useful rule with these most variable plants, viz., to take an a\·erage of several leaves, spores, &c. In F. ens/ala, for example, some spores have less than 30 ridges, others have more than 30. An average of a good number of them gives about 30 ridges, whereas F. pusil/a never has more than 2f, and usually much less, 15 to 18." -W. Ingham.

One has the areolation. shape, size, &c., of leaf of A. varium ,-nerve sometimes rather short, perhaps, but in spite of that and the habit must belong. I think, to that species. The otht'!r I am inclined to call a slender form of H. rpari ium, but not A. lriclzopodium as defined by Limpricht·- still less A. Koclzii."-T. Barker. This plant was sent for criticism. "I think . . . it is clear from the highly papillose leaves of this plant, it cannot belong to 'confe r/a ' as described by Limpricht, nor have I been able to distinguish the orange-red colour of the pNistome to which Mr. Meldrum alludes. I have found the peristome teeth distinctly orange in typical confer/a. which, conjoined with the .. < smooth areolation of the leaves, make the plant fairly easy to recognise. In any event, if Mr. Waddell's plant be the var. pruinosa. I should certainly agree with 1\'1r. Wheldon in fo llowing Husnot by placing it as a variety under G. apocarpa rather than under G. conflrla."-W. E. Nicholson. "I am doubtful whether the presence or absence of papillre on the leaf cells is a character of much practical value, since in the var. pumila (and kindred alpine forms) of G. apocarpa (the only ones as a rule likely to be a cause of difficulty) the cells are often at least quite smooth. I have such a plant from the summit of Ben Lawers, with peristome teeth scarcely at all zoo

crihroe. and of a paler red at any ratt- than in th;:typ ical ap()rarpa ; in fact to my eyes (and i\lons. Theriot agrees with mt) scarcely ditJn;;uisltable from G. co,iferta in ;mytll111f! but the non-cribrose .te<·th. Of course, at the same time, this cloes not ilfTc:ct 1\'Tr. l Nicholson's conclusion that r r. \Vaddcll's p ant is nea rer G. apocarpa th an G. confer/a, on account of (inttr alia) th(" papillose cells."-H. Amb/)'sltgium Korhii (?) near Perth, R.II.M. "lt is unfortunate I that, as pointecl out by Prof. Barker, two plants somewhat closdy allied, are mixed in this specimen. The one, with denser, greener, slight ly larg-t;:r and less spreading leaves, is certainly a form of H. riparium, presenting little difliculty of determination. owing to the longer, characte ristic cells. As to the other, after careful compariso n of all my plants of A. wrium. inclurling the fo rm known as var. orlltodadum, and descriptions, I cannot beli eve that this plant belongs there. Apart from the habit (distant preading leaves, &c.) the areolation is I think quite distinct. .1. varium has always. 1 think, a very neat areolation. difficult to define, but depending partly on the short cells [ Z·+ times as Ion).( as wide (Limpricht) ; very rarely, if ever 5 times as long as "·ide (Ch, Su$scx, 1895. in leaf charactl·rs-not in habit, and, if that plant be correctly name:-d, I should have no hesitation about identifying i\lr. i\Io::ldrum's plant with .d.Juratzkanum.
