Indeed, fencing has been regarded as an art, and/or a science, and/or a sport, and/or a game. This paper shows that those various attempts to define fencing throughout history are strategies aiming to conceal the founding violence of fencing (although these strategies do not prevent the emergence of further forms of violence). The study demonstrates that these strategies pertain to semantics, to regulation and codification of fencing, and to more recent phenomena which are linked to the deterritorialization of the practice of fencing. Mike instructs in rapier and longsword with SCA Dun in Mara and interprets and teaches the martial arts of Pietro Monte, as chief instructor with the Historical Combat Academy, in Dublin, Ireland. He also teaches internationally at Historical European Martial Arts events and hosted the 2015 International Rapier Seminar. Mike competes internationally in tournaments and has taken medals in a variety of weapon forms including gold in rapier and sword & buckler. He also trained for several years in Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu, the traditional Japanese style of swordsmanship founded by the famous duellist and strategist Miyamoto Musashi.

Over 500 comments were received during the recent period for public commentary alone. Further, the document has been the subject of not one, but several committees along the way. The objectives of all this work are to provide an updated, re-organized handbook for fencing in the Society, to expand our game by making available new activities and weapons, as well as to document rules for activities that have been in use but unregulated for some years.
