CBP officials examined samples of the belt buckles last week and determined that they were indistinguishable from various items bearing the Michael Jackson name, words and images registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the Copyright Office of the Library of Congress. click for hi-res CBP officers at the Port of Los Angeles/Long Beach confiscated several Michael Jackson items that appeared to violate U.S. intellectual property rights. After the importer was unable to provide authorization for the use of the trademarks and the copyrights, CBP officers seized the shipment containing 800 belt buckles. The domestic value of the shipment is $400, with an estimated manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $6,992. “Intellectual property rights are key to a vibrant and productive economy, which is why IPR violations are a trade enforcement priority,” said Kevin Weeks CBP director of field operation, Los Angeles. “Seizures such as this are the result of good work by CBP officers on the frontline responsible for enforcing hundreds of our nation’s laws.” The shipment contained an assortment of items bearing Michael Jackson’s copyrighted images along with the trademarked words “Michael Jackson,” “Dangerous World Tour 1992,” “Dangerous,” “Moonwalker,” “Bad World Tour,” “King of Pop” and “Money,” the title of a popular Michael Jackson song. CBP has designated intellectual property rights enforcement a priority trade issue, devoting considerable resources and personnel to IPR enforcement. CBP’s strategic approach to IPR enforcement is multi-layered and includes seizing fake goods at our borders, pushing the border outward through audits of infringing importers, cooperation with our international trading partners and collaborating with industry and other government agencies to enhance these efforts. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry.     MA 330.004 / MA430.005 /AMST 341.002 Fall 2016 Revised: 10-7-16 The Cinematic Worlds of Michael Jackson Course Description: From his early years as a child star on the Chitlin’ Circuit and at Motown Records, through the concert rehearsal documentary This is It (released shortly after his death in 2009), Michael Jackson left a rich legacy of recorded music, televised performances, and short films (a description he preferred to “music video”). In this course we’ll look at Jackson’s artistic work as key to his vast influence on popular culture over the past 50 years. While we will emphasize the short films he starred in (of which Thriller is perhaps the most famous), we will also listen to his music, view his concert footage and TV appearances (including some rare interviews) and explore the few feature films in which he appeared as an actor/singer/dancer (The Wiz, Moonwalker). We’ll read from a growing body of scholarly writing on Jackson’s cultural significance, noting the ways he drew from a very diverse performance and musical traditions—including minstrelsy, the work of dance/choreography pioneers like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, and soul/funk legends like James Brown and Jackie Wilson—to craft a style uniquely his own. Crucially, we will ask how Jackson’s shifting public persona destabilize categories of gender, sexuality, and race----in a manner that was very different from his contemporaries: notably, the recently-deceased David Bowie and Prince. Martin Michael Jackson produced art in its most total sense. Throughout his forty-year career Jackson merged art forms, melded genres and styles, and promoted an ethos of unity in his work. Jackson’s mastery of combined song and dance is generally acknowledged as the hallmark of his performance. Scholars have not- ed Jackson’s place in the lengthy soul tradition of enmeshed movement and mu- sic (Mercer 39; Neal 2012) with musicologist Jacqueline Warwick describing Jackson as “embodied musicality” (Warwick 249). Jackson’s colleagues have also attested that even when off-stage and off-camera, singing and dancing were frequently inseparable for Jackson. James Ingram, co-songwriter of the Thriller album hit “PYT,” was astonished when he observed Jackson burst into dance moves while recording that song, since in Ingram’s studio experience singers typically conserve their breath for recording (Smiley). Similarly, Bruce Swedien, Jackson’s longtime studio recording engineer, told National Public Radio, “Re- cording [with Jackson] was never a static event. We used to record with the lights out in the studio, and I had him on my drum platform. Michael would dance on that as he did the vocals” (Swedien ix-x). Surveying his life-long body of work, Jackson’s creative capacities, in fact, encompassed acting, directing, producing, staging, and design as well as lyri- cism, music composition, dance, and choreography—and many of these across genres (Brackett 2012).

    These three very different video games illustrate some of the many ways rock music has been incorporated into ROCK MUSIC recent video games. Born in Gary, Indiana, the eighth of ten children, Michael Jackson began his music and dance training at a young age. He was a lover tap and modern jazz, especially the work of the Nicholas Brothers, Fred Astaire, and Gene Kelly. Michael studied the moves of these performers closely. Michael also learned about the craft of performing from James Brown as well as many other African-American soul, R&B, and Motown artists. In 1964, at age six, Michael joined his brothers’ band as a backup vocalist and percussionist. By age eight, he was singing lead vocals with the band, which by this time was called The Jackson 5. Guided under the strict supervision of their father, Joe, the Jackson 5 toured the Midwest extensively in the late 1960s, performing as opening acts at black nightclubs. In 1968, the group was signed by Motown Records and set Billboard chart records with hit singles such as “I Want You Back”, “ABC”, “The Love You Save”, and “I’ll Be There.” It was during this time that young Michael was recognized as having prodigious gifts as a musician and dancer.

Ruchi Mital This is a study of Michael Jackson as a self and cultural construct over the last 20 years. Michael Jackson is one of the most eminent cultural phenomena of our time, with a mass, global reach. The play within his artistic productions (which include his performances, films, and body) between more conventional modes of imagery, such as the religious, mythic, supernatural, and totalitarian, and the postmodern use of the breaking down of traditional binary oppositions, and the fact that these have all been consumed and mediated through the mass media of film and television, expose the hyperreality which marks the postmodern universe. We see how his productions as an artist are inseparable from his consumption as an image, the dissolving of this type of boundary and the ensuing game that is played out because of it being one of the primary tenets of postmodern theory. For a theoretical approach the study will use the literature of science fiction, especially cyberpunk, and postmodern theory, which both speak to the question of what happens to art, the concept of self, and the quest for transcendence in a world in which the boundaries between the public/ private, natural/cultural, organic/ inorganic, real/ imaginary have collapsed and reality itself has moved into the realm of the simulacrum. This work is an exploration of the continuing mass fascination with The Case of Michael Jackson, and the implications that it has in terms of definition of self (also the possibilities of freedom and transcendence associated with the self), as well as our present cultural condition, and the relationship that is being played out between them.
