The day before yesterday 166 Notes 175 Images 191 Introduction and acknowledgements POLITICS AND SPORT are by definition incompatible, and they're combustible when mixed. The 1930s proved that: the Winter Olympics in Germany in 1936, when the President of the International Olympic Committee threatened to cancel the Games unless the anti-semitic posters were all taken down now, whatever Adolf Hitler decrees; the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin and Hitler's look of utter disgust when Jesse Owens, a negro, won the 100 metres; the World Heavyweight title fight in 1938 between Joe Louis, a negro, and Germany's Max Schmeling which carried racial undertones and overtones. The fight lasted 2 minutes 4 seconds, and in that time Louis knocked Schmeling down four times. They say that some of Schmeling's teeth were found embedded in Louis's glove... Motor racing, a dangerous but genteel activity in the 1920s and early 1930s, was touched by this, too, and touched hard. The combustible mixture produced two Grand Prix races at Donington Park, in 1937 and 1938, which were just as dramatic, just as sinister and just as full of foreboding. This is the full story of those races. -
100 Years of Bugatti at Concorso D'eleganza
100 years of Bugatti at Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este CERNOBBIO 26 04 2009 IN A FURTHER HIGHLIGHT ON THIS YEAR’S AGENDA OF CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS, BUGATTI AUTOMOBILES S.A.S. PRESENTED FOUR BUGATTI VEYRON SPECIALS AT VILLA D’ESTE CONCORSO D’ELEGANZA. In a further highlight on this year’s agenda of centennial celebrations, Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. presented four Bugatti Veyron specials at Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza. These one off models are reminders of Bugatti’s glorious motor-racing history which played a central role in popularising and ultimately establishing the myth which the brand continues to enjoy to this day. The Bugatti brand is almost inextricably linked to the Type 35. The Type 35 Grand Prix was by far the most successful racing model. The unmistakable radiator grille and eight-spoke aluminium wheels of the Type 35 have become defining features of the Bugatti automobile. In its day, the Grand Prix was also well ahead of its time in terms of engineering ingenuity. The front axle design of this vehicle, which, for reasons of weight minimisation, is hollow, is a true masterpiece of workmanship and was deemed nothing less than revolutionary. Its springs were passed through the axle to produce a high level of stability. The Grand Prix’s brake drums were integrally fitted into its lightweight aluminium wheels. Unfastening the central wheel nut allowed the wheel to be easily removed within a matter of seconds and the brake to be exposed. This was a crucial advantage at the pit stop. 2000 wins in ten years The blue racers made their first appearance on the race track at the Grand Prix held by Automobil Club de France in Lyon in 1924. -

F1 Advent Calendar 2012 (Day 15) – Ten for Twelve
F1 Advent Calendar 2012 (Day 15) – Ten for twelve Hello and welcome to the F1 Advent Calendar 2012. This is our mini series taking a look at the highs and lows of the season Just gone, the key moments that made it a pretty incredible year. Today we are moving towards the rear of the grid where an intense battle was playing out. This is Day Fifteen - Ten for twelve. The talk from Caterham ahead of the 2012 season was all about moving forward and away from the other new teams they started their time in Formula One with. Two tenth place season finishes in a row had seen them with a cash inJection, and the hope was for them to take a leap forward and start scoring points. The double retirement in Australia wasn’t exactly the start they were looking for, but a 13th place in Mon- aco for Kovalainen and a similar result in Valencia for Petrov meant the team were keeping a comfortable hold on their tenth place. Then came the Singapore Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton put in a pretty fabulous lap to secure pole position on the Saturday, whilst all eyes were on the Williams pair. Pastor Maldonado was proving his pace in the car by hauling the Williams up to second place on the grid, whilst Bruno Senna crashed out in second qualify- ing, finding his way towards one of those pesky walls. The Ferrari drivers were split, with Fernando Alonso up in fifth, and Felipe Massa in thirteenth. Lining up on the front row of the grid, after a minute of silence paying tribute to Sid Watkins, Hamilton pre- pared for the lights to go out and the race to begin. -

Bonnier Books Ltd, United Kingdom, 2014. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Legendary Brazilian racing driver Ayrton Senna s intensity and commitment earned him a reputation as one of the biggest names in world sport. In his brief, fiery Grand Prix career, he won 41 races and three world championships. But it was his belief, passion and raw speed that made him a global superstar - and, at times, a dramatically controversial figure. Senna felt he was the best - and his results certainly backed up his belief. But the Brazilian s rivals - most notably his McLaren team-mate, Alain Prost - were aware that his self-belief could be contentious; his utter refusal to be beaten occasionally led to colourful consequences on the track. Senna s death at the San Marino Grand Prix on 1 May 1994 stunned the world. Many books have been written since that freak accident at the wheel of a Williams 20 years ago, but none captures the warm relationship he had with McLaren, the team with which he enjoyed his greatest successes.
