AN IMPORTANT OBSERVATION IS THAT THE BUFFALO 5c “SPEARED BISON” & THE “WISCONSIN” 25c EXTRA LEAFS ARE SHOWING UP AT SHOWS. MOST DEALERS I SPOKE TO AT SHOWS ARE HAVING TROUBLE FINDING COLLECTORS FOR THESE ITEMS. THEY WIND UP SELLING THEM ON THE INTERNET. THEY ARE LOOKING TO PURCHASE THESE AS CHEAP AS POSSIBLE.

HIGH GRADE SPEARED BISONS HAVE HAD A SUBSTANTIAL DROP IN BUYERS. WHILE THE WISCONSIN LOW/HIGH LEAFS DROPPED IN PRICE THE FIRST MONTH OF THE QUARTER BUT ARE ON THE RISE. his numismatic discovery was just certified in T2007 by NGC. It is one of two known U.S. Liberty gold coins struck on wrong planchets and certified by either NGC or PCGS as a mint error. The other known piece is a unique 1851 $20 Liberty struck on a cent planchet and certified by NGC.

Coincidentally, in 1975 I bought the 1851 $20 Liberty on a planchet from Fred Weinberg. It was one of the highlights from the famous Dr. J. Hewitt Judd Collection. Judd listed it with illustration in Appendix B of his pattern book as a mint error. Until the discovery of this 1866 $2½ struck on a 3 Cent Nickel planchet, it was the only known U.S. gold coin struck on a wrong planchet. The $20 struck on the Large Cent planchet now resides in an East Coast collection of mint errors and is valued by many mint error specialists at over $150,000 should it ever become available.

This unique 1866 $2½ is an incredible discovery for many reasons. An 1866 $2½ has an extremely low mintage with only 3,080 struck and is one of the rarest dated $2½ Liberties known. It is a five-figure coin in just mint state 60 and a true gem, if it existed in this grade, would be worth well into six-figures.

This mint error is in gem condition. It was fully struck and has pristine fields and a flawless portrait. I would $20 on a Large Cent blank and this 1866 $2½ on a 3 describe this coin as struck. It weighs 2.04 grams since Cent Nickel planchet have been verified. I’ve handled it was accidentally struck on a 3 Cent Nickel blank patterns, die trials, splashers and other numismatic planchet. Now here is a sampling of the Washington $1 error coins that we have seen to date. The first group of errors show improperly spaced edge letters and partial edge letters. These coins will display a blank edge, which NGC describes as MISSING EDGE LETTERING. Many thousands of Washington $1 Coins did, in fact, miss this step and were released without the edge lettering.

Just like the Washington $1 coins, the Adams coins show an abundance of edge lettering errors. The first errors to surface for this issue were doubled edge lettered coins. This error occurs when a coin passes through the edge lettering machine twice. These come in two variations which are recognized by NGC:

Doubled edge lettering with the second set of letters overlapping the first (in various degrees from close to far). Because of space considerations, this is described on the NGC certification label as DBL.EDG.LET. – OVERLAPPED.

Doubled edge lettering with the second set of letters inverted over the first. On inverted examples, the two sets of edge lettering are in opposite orientation. One faces up when the obverse side is up, and the other is upside down. This is described on the NGC certification label as DBL.EDG.LET. – INVERTED. Photo #1a: Obverse with exploded edge view of 2007 P John Adams $1, showing overlapped doubled edge lettering. Since these coins are fed through the edge lettering machine at random orientation, the edge lettering will appear randomly (as will the doubling) on the edge of the coins. This explains why some of the doubled edge lettering is overlapping and some inverted.

Here are some photos of doubled edge lettering. Again, the variety of positioning and orientation of the letters is essentially limitless. Photo #1b: Close up of overlapped doubled edge lettering.

With the Washington dollars, we saw some of the errors that exist for virtually every modern coin type. These include errors such as filled dies and rotated dies. Dirt, grease or other material can adhere to the die during minting. The filled portion of the die does not impart Photo #2b: Close up of edge, showing the inverted doubled detail to the struck coin. Errors of this type are labeled edge lettering. as OBV STRUCK THRU.

Another error that we have seen occurs when a coin has missed the edge lettering process entirely, and therefore has a blank edge. NGC certifies this Mint Error as MISSING EDGE LETTERING.

Page 49 minterrornews.com Presidential $1 Error Coins: John Adams Rotated dies can be either minor (within mint tolerance) resulted in “medallic” alignment versus the correct, or major. This error occurs when the die turns during “coin” alignment. Medallic alignment occurs then the striking or when the dies is inserted improperly into dies are rotated a full 180 degrees. The illustration the coinage press. The Adams dollars has been found below shows various types of alignment. Page 50 minterrornews.com Presidential $1 Error Coins: John Adams This next coin is new to the series. On this coin, the edge lettering die seems to have been inadvertently laser-etched, making the entire edge of the coin appear frosted or matte-like. At first glance, without putting a loop to the coin, the edge appears simply less shiny than normal coins. Magnification of the edge of the coin reveals the lines associated with laser etching. While NGC is not recognizing this the matte edge Adams $1 at this time, we are currently investigating it for attribution.

These are statements that are frequently heard popular collectables. So don’t be taken back by the within the Error Coin hobby: prices of today’s error coins. We see the same continuing appreciation to continue for many, many years to Well, I’m sure we can make these same comments on come. many things over the years. Let’s see...

In 1969, I purchased my home for $35,000. Today it’s worth $600,000. Taxes for my home were just $1,200 per year. Today taxes are nearly $9,000.

1972 I bought a new Toyota Corolla, fully equipped for $2,500. Today they cost over $20,000.

I’m sure your starting to get my point. In 1980 (27 years ago) mint errors like dated Nickel on Cent planchets in BU were approximately $15. Today the same error is worth over $250. Now, is that a bad thing? Some may think so if they just started collecting. But others that started back in the 1980’s are reaping large capitol gains (profits).

OK, here is another thought! What was my salary 30- 40 years ago? $15,000 - $20,000 per year. 40 years ago it was under $10,000 and on that amount I was able to purchase a new home (In New York, Long Island), raise a family and still collect mint errors. What is your salary or salary potential today? $50,000 - $100,000 - $150,000 or more? Maybe you have a spouse that also works.

My point is that everything goes up in price eventually: Salaries, Homes, Taxes, College Educations, 401k, and Page 52 minterrornews.com Are Error Coins Too Highly Priced? What’s fueling these gains?

Popularity: Mint errors have become popular among many collectors. They can be found in most major auctions. Many of these auctions set new records for better high grade examples of rare mint errors.

Availability: With the introduction of new presses in all the U.S. Mint facilities, very few new mint errors are produced. Even the common off-center Cent has become a rarity. Those that are made are usually caused by an outside vendor’s mistake and the only error by the U.S. Mint is that it escaped the Mint’s screening process to weed these out. What errors are made by outside vendors?

Clips: Most of the planchets are made by outside companies and sold to the U.S. Mint.

Cladding Errors: Error such as missing clad layers, partial cladding or laminated cladding.

Improper Plated Cents: Either partially or totally; Cents that are missing the copper plating with the zinc core showing.

These errors are made by outside vendors (companies) and accidentally sold to the U.S. Mint.

Page 53 minterrornews.com Are Error Coins Too Highly Priced? Striking Errors: Errors such as Off Centers, Caps, There are fewer mint errors entering the error coin Indents, Multiple Strikes, Off Metals, Double market since the installation of the newer presses at the Denominations, etc. are seldom made by the newer U.S. Mint. This has caused a real shortage of newer presses installed recently at the U.S. Mint. material, thereby fueling a Bull market with ever increasing prices.

Basically, what is out there is ALL that is available. As errors get placed into collections they have a tendency not to surface for several years or even decades. That also creates an even larger shortage of available errors.

I hope you get a clear picture of what has happened over the years. Increased popularity, inflation and limited availability of mint errors all contribute to increased error coin prices that we’ve seen in the last decade.

So don’t hesitate because of the current price level of errors, and look back at the so called “good old days.” Because a few years from now you will be saying the same thing about today’s current prices.

Established 1972 Mint Error News Price Guide - Entire Price Guide Updated 07/01/07 -

This price guide is brought to you by Mint Error News. It has been compiled by many of the top major mint error dealers.

This price guide is a guide. Prices f luctuate due to the date, grade, eye appeal and how dramatic the striking error is. Rarity is also a factor. The price is sometimes based on the rarity and grade of the type of coin as well as how rare the error is. The price can also vary depending on whether two collectors are bidding for the same rare major mint error. When purchasing a mint error, it is important to use multiple resources to determine value, as there are many mint errors that do not fit into one category. Proof Errors roof coins are struck by technicians who hand Pfeed the blanks into special presses. They are produced, examined, and packaged using extreme quality control. It is very unusual to find major proof errors. A few broadstrikes, off-centers, double strikes in collars and off-metals have been known to be found in sealed proof sets. Proof errors are aggressively sought after by many error collectors.

A very small group of Proof errors recently came from a collection that was auctioned by the State of California. The U.S. Secret Service inspected and released this collection to the State of California determining that it was legal to own. The State of California then auctioned the collection and it has been dispersed since the sale.

broadstruck error occurs when a coin is A struck without the collar to form the rim and edge that is part of the shape of the coin. Coins can be broadstruck on either type one or type two planchets. When a coin is broadstruck the blank being fed into the collar will spread and distort outward as it is being struck because the collar isn’t in the correct position to retain it.

Page 83 minterrornews.com Mint Error News Price Guide Partial Collars artial collar strikes occur when there is a mal- Pfunction of the striking press. This causes the collar to be in an incorrect position. The lower die (usually the reverse die) is recessed in the collar. This allows the coin which is going to be struck to have a formed rim. After a coin is struck the lower die raises upwards, pushing the struck coin out of the collar and ejecting it. If a blank entering the collar is not properly seated, it will only have partial reeding as it is struck. The edge of this coin will have a partial reeding and a partial blank surface area. Recently, the Mint has installed new machinery where either die can be installed in either position. Page 84 minterrornews.com Mint Error News Price Guide Uniface Strikes niface coins occur when there have been two Ublank planchets in the press at the same time. The other blank will obstruct the die on either the obverse or reverse side, which will prevent it from having that design on the coin. There are many different variations involving uniface errors. In addition to having a 100% blank obverse or re- verse, a coin can be struck off-center, with a blank planchet in the collar which will obstruct one side of the off-center. There are also mated pairs which have a combination of multiple errors which can include a side which is uniface. Finally, there are uniface strikes due to a die cap which adhered to the die, forming itself in the shape of a die and striking blank planchets.

onded coins occur when the feeder sys- Btem, which supplies blank planchets to the coin press, malfunctions and jams. When this occurs, a struck coin is not properly eject- ed and another planchet is fed into the collar and is struck. This struck coin will land on top of the previously unejected strike. These coins will then crush and bond together. This may occur many times as more coins bond.

Page 86 minterrornews.com Mint Error News Price Guide Coins Struck on Feeder Finger Tips fter a recent tour of the U.S. AMint at Philadelphia, it was discovered that the minting process had changed to some degree. One of the changes was that “feeder fingers” were used during the striking of all denominations of U.S. coins. Prior to this tour, U.S. coins that were struck on feeder finger tips were authenti- cated and described as being struck on aluminum scrap. Coins from all modern denominations have been discovered that were struck on the tips of these feeder fingers.

Page 88 minterrornews.com Mint Error News Price Guide Mated Pairs ated pairs involve two individual coins with different er- Mrors that were struck together at the same time. Mated pair error combinations can be found in most error types and come in many shapes and sizes. Mated pairs can be overlapped when one of the coins is struck off-center on top of another coin. Another type involves a brockage where a struck coin was perfectly centered on a blank and restruck. Some mated pairs involve a die cap where the cap and brockage coin are discov- ered together, but this is a scarce find.

The rarest mated pair type involves two die caps (obverse and reverse) where both dies were capped at the same time and both die caps are mated. This last type is extremely rare and there are only a few known examples of mated pairs involving an obverse die cap and reverse die cap. There are several of these mated pairs known on Kennedy Halves in- cluding two dated 1976, which is the Bicentennial year. One of the most spectacular mated pairs involve two Barber Dimes, an obverse die cap mated to a reverse die cap and are unique.

Mated pairs can also involve an off-metal where a smaller blank planchet or smaller struck coin was struck on top of a larger coin. This type is extremely rare. The most spectacular pair known is a double struck Franklin Half which was mated to a Lincoln Cent. The Lincoln Cent blank was on top of the obverse of the struck Franklin Half. This pair was then struck together. It is unique.

Page 89 minterrornews.com Mint Error News Price Guide Transitional Errors transitional error occurs when a coin is struck A on a planchet from a previous year with dif- ferent metal composition. The most famous transi- tional is a 1943 copper cent struck on a 1942 cop- per blank. 1943 cents were struck in steel because of the copper shortage during World War II. Other famous transitionals include 1965 coinage struck in silver instead of clad.

There are also transitionals struck on blanks for the next year. An example is 1964 coinage in clad instead of silver. Most recently, transitionals were discovered involving the SBA and Sacagawea Dollars of 1999 and 2000. There are eight known 1999 SBA Dollars struck on the brass planchet for the 2000 Sacagawea Dollar, and four known 2000 Sacagawea Dollars struck on a clad planchet for the 1999 SBA Dollar.

Page 90 minterrornews.com Mint Error News Price Guide U.S. Gold Errors ajor mint errors on U.S. Gold coins are the Mmost prized category of all mint errors. Gold errors are very rare and a few have traded in the $75,000 to $100,000 range. Even a broad- struck U.S. Gold coin can easily sell for $15,000 to $30,000 compared to a broadstruck Cent, Nickel, Dime or Quarter which all sell for well under $10. Many serious collectors of Gold Errors have to wait patiently for months and sometimes even years to aquire that one special piece for their collection.

The prices listed here are for common dates in AU-Unc. Better dates and errors that are in gem condition are worth considerably more.

n indent error occurs when two blanks are Afed inadvertently into the same collar, with one blank partly overlaying on top of the other. When the hammer die strikes this combination, the upper blank will be forced into the lower blank, creating a depression which is shaped similar to the upper blank. A scarce type of indent occurs when a blank intended for one denomination lands on top of a blank from a dif- ferent denomination.

Page 92 minterrornews.com Mint Error News Price Guide Die Caps ie caps are caused when a struck coin sticks Dto the upper hammer die. Once the coin is struck to the die face, the reverse of the struck coin becomes the new die face. When the next blank is fed into the collar and the strike occurs, the reverse design of the adheared struck coin impresses itself into the new blank. This struck coin is a brockage strike. The coin that adhered to the upper die is known as a die cap. This process repeats itself as more coins are struck by the cap. The greater the number of strikes, the higher the cap metal will be pushed around the upper die shaft. Eventually, the cap brakes away from the die in the shape of a thimble. Page 93 minterrornews.com Mint Error News Price Guide Die Adjustment Strikes

ie adjustment strikes are also known Das die trials. This error occurs when a coin is struck from the press with very little pressure. When the press is being set up and adjusted, extremely weak strikes occur as the strike pressure reaches its optimum level. These die trials are destroyed after being struck and are rarely found in circulation.

ne of the most expensive, popular, and Odesired types of errors are the double denominations. This error happens when a coin is struck on a previously struck coin of a smaller denomination. Examples are a cent on a struck dime, and a nickel on a struck cent. The most dramatic are those with consider- able design visible from the original strike. There are a few known double denominations with different dates.

Page 95 minterrornews.com Mint Error News Price Guide Brockages brockage error can only occur when there A are two coins involved. One of the coins involved will always be a struck coin which has not ejected properly. That struck coin will find its way back between the dies and will be struck next to a blank planchet which was fed into the collar. The image of that first struck coin will be impressed into that side of the blank planchet. The result will be a second coin which has im- ages of the first coin impressed into it. Those im- ages will be pressed into the coin and the image will be in reverse. This incuse sunken image is known as a brockage.

hen a blank planchet is struck by the Wdies, the normal procedure is for the feeders to eject the struck coin out of the collar and into a chute. If there is a malfunc- tion and the struck coin isn’t ejected, it may receive a second or third strike by the dies. A multiple struck coin can happen in many ways and have many combinations of errors.

ff-center coins are one of the most com- Omon and best known types of errors. This happens when a blank which is sup- posed to be fed into the press, lands in the collar improperly. When this occurs only part of the blank is between the upper and lower dies. When the dies strike the blank, only that part will be struck with a design.

ff-metal and wrong planchet errors occur when a correctly made Oblank from one denomination is accidentaly fed into a press for another denomination. Examples are a nickel struck on a cent planchet and a cent struck on a dime planchet. The coin struck on an incorrect blank will weigh exactly what the denomination of that blank would have been. An even more dramatic wrong planchet error is a coin struck on a previously struck coin of a different metal.

Doubled edge lettering errors occur when a coin passes through the edge lettering machine twice. There are two variations of this mint error.

One variation is doubled edge lettering with the second set of letters overlapping the first (in various degrees from close to far).

Another variation is doubled edge lettering with the second set of letters inverted over the first. On inverted examples, the two sets of edge lettering are in opposite orientation. One faces up when the obverse side is up, and the other is upside down.

When the coins are fed through the edge lettering machine, the edge lettering will appear randomly (as will the doubling) on the edge of the coins. This explains why some of the doubled edge lettering is overlapping and some inverted.
