From Your 2019 Commander

Cdr Fred Zibbel, JN

Cell 567-395-4759 Email [email protected]

I sincerely hope everyone has had a safe, healthy and enjoyable summer. Many have attended the planned cruises and rendezvous’ and departed feeling energized, a better boater and renewed or created new friendships. Others have traveled to various destinations to visit family or for a much needed change of scenery. Ann & I, attended the rendezvous at Harsen’s Island, with Stf/C Larry Cole, SN and D/Lt/C Jason Snook, SN leading the way. It was a small group that attended this year, but that did not dimin- ish the fun and enjoyment that was had by all. The time spent with Jan and Don Leutz was filled with stories of squadron members that left me very impressed. I left Harsen’s Island feeling that I had discovered a whole new appreciation of why we belong to the Toledo Squadron. The stories they told me were of members who have contributed to, and experienced all the squadron has to offer. The light bulb suddenly illuminated and I thought we should be sharing some of the stories of our members so that everyone can get to know each other a little better. Some folks have extensively traveled the Great Lakes, some have conquered the Great Loop and many others have great stories that impress and inspire. So in an attempt to get to know each other a little better, this issue of the Breeze will have a new section that will be titled “Member Spotlight”. Every month you will be learn- ing about one of our members, their experiences, contributions and maybe something you previously didn’t know about them. In late June and early July, I traveled to the Upper Peninsula with P/C Rita Buck, P/C Leonard Buck and my sister Julie. We made the trip to reminisce about our summer family childhood experiences in the Upper Peninsula. We visited the Tahquamenon Falls, Soo Locks, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Cedarville, Munising, Grand Marais, Whitefish Point and Neebish Island. We arrived in Barbeau, MI, intent on taking the Neebish Island Ferry the short distance across the St. Mary’s River to visit Boni Thibert. It was a 5 minute ride across the river and upon ar- rival at her house we had hoped to present to her, the USPS Life Member Pin and her Life Member Card, on behalf of the Toledo Sail and Power Squadron for our appreciation for all she has done. We did not connect with Boni on this trip, as she was likely out cutting firewood to warm her house this winter. The photo will attest that she’s as busy as a squirrel preparing for the coming cold winter months. We stopped by a neighbor, Dot Tyner’s house, and after friendly conversation, we left the pin and card for her to present to Boni. I look forward to seeing everyone at the September General Membership meeting at Toledo Yacht Club on Sep- tember 3rd. If you have not, please call or email Lucia Rooks and let her know you plan on attending. Details of the meeting will be in the September issue of the Breeze.

The Breeze 3 September 2019

Did you learn anything this summer during your boating experiences? Electrical issues plagued a few of us during our district cruise out. With the new GFS switches at the mari- nas many had trouble running their “amenities” without popping their breakers or the dockside breakers. Make sure you check your electrical system to make sure it’s updated. A piloting class will start on September 12, 2019 at 6:30pm at the Port Authority building in the 2nd floor classroom. Please call Phyllis Zibbel by August 23rd if you are interested. The cost is $58 for you book and materials. Let her know if you need a plotter ($7) and di- vider ($12). Hopefully sometime in October we’ll be able to have an instructor’s course. Stay tuned. DEO Hoover and I have been asked to present at the USPS’s governing board in Louisville, KY in September to share our Squadron’s experience in getting people to attend our classes. If there was something that drew you to our classes please give me a call so I can share it with other squadrons. Be safe and be an example to others. Share your knowledge with other boaters whenever you get a chance.

“Sharing your experiences and knowledge with others is life changing for both!”

The Breeze 4 September 2019 SPOTLIGHT ON SQUADRON MEMBER - ERNEST W. MEASE

Preface: Featuring a Member Spotlight in The Breeze each month is the brainstorm of Cdr Fred Zibbel and Lt Jan Leutz. I am pleased to submit requested information about my husband Ernie Mease who has tremendously en- joyed the boating world. The education, the cruising that resulted, and the friendships could not have happened without the Toledo Squadron. Joyce Mease Ernie’s Boating: Ernie always wanted a boat. Got his first (and only one) at age 70—wanted one he could trailer and live aboard when cruising—bought a new 1995 2450 Bayliner hard top cabin cruiser he named “Shangri-La”. Before delivery of the Bayliner he checked around about boating education. Called City of Toledo, talked to a help- ful man name of Mike Schabeck who said if you plan to cruise Lake Erie and beyond then you need to take the Tole- do Squadron’s basic boating course. Ernie did (thanks to Mike) and afterward, looking forward to charting and cruising, Ernie then took Piloting (great teacher was Kaye Soka) and then Advanced Piloting (grateful to Larry Cole for his help w/AP). The new Bayliner did develop a major problem initially: shifter failed – when in “reverse”, was actually in “forward”. Docking accident severely injured Ernie’s shoulder. Settlement with Bayliner resulted in Ernie having a bow thruster installed on the boat enabling him to do solo boating. Ernie first cruised the Erie Canal in 1995 with his brother. Then Ernie did extensive cruising with his brother as follows: 1997 1,150 miles thru Lake Erie, Erie Canal, Hudson River, Atlantic Ocean, Cape May Canal, Delaware Bay, to Annap- olis, trailered boat home to Maumee River Yacht Club. 1998 1,250 miles, 17 days, Welland Canal, Trent-Severn, Georgian Bay Waterway, Lake Huron, Lake St. Clair, Detroit River, back to home port at Maumee River Yacht Club. 1999 1,629 miles, 30 days, Lake Erie, Welland Canal, Lake Ontario, Thousand Islands, St. Lawrence River & Seaway locks, etc. etc., Hudson River, Erie Canal, back home. Locked thru total 77 canal locks. 2000 670 miles, 14 days, boat trailered to Benton Harbor, MI – cruised clockwise around lower Lake Michigan. As Dan Strohmeier said, “Ernie, you have probably logged in more cruising miles than any other squadron member!” In subsequent years Ernie and Joyce boated to many Toledo Squadron rendezvous: Belle River, Algonac, Huron, Vermilion, Pelee, Put-in-Bay, Kelleys. And who could ever forget the houseboat cruise arranged by Jerri Nicholson thru Trent-Severn Waterway in Canada. Ernie’s personal info: As a member of the “Greatest Generation”, Ernie (who has a twin sister) was born and raised in Washington DC, enlisted in the Navy at the onset of WWII at age 18 (he was determined to make it the Navy), and served 2-1/2 years stationed in the South Pacific. Says his hardest and most rewarding work was as an 18 year old Navy Seabee working with older skilled tradesmen for which the Seabees were known. He operated a crane, bull- dozer, road grader, they all worked around the clock. They were preparing to invade the enemy when two atom bombs ended the war. What miraculous news! On G.I. bill Ernie attended Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, graduated with a Mech. Engr. degree. Recruited by Haughton Elevator Co., worked for Haughton in Washington, then NYC, then back in Toledo where he supervised mechanics. Ernie enjoyed a terrific social life as a single man—dancing and dating, member and president of several social groups, many girlfriends. Marriage to Joyce in 1970 put an end to his wild life!!, now married for 49 years, 2 children David and Melissa. Had the opportunity shortly after married to leave Haughton and partner with a friend to architect and build University Village Apartments in Bowling Green, total 84 apartments. It was with great sadness that Ernie decided to sell his beloved “Shangri-La” since no longer up to cruising, his broth- er was otherwise occupied, and wife and kids not interested. But the boating memories and friendships remain and are so very great for a 94 year old. Thank you, Toledo Squad- ron. The Breeze 5 September 2019

She want- ed to clarify that at the time the Planning Committee made the recommendation to handle a membership thank you in this manner they were not aware that a generous meat entrée donation has been handled by members Joe and Mary Schaller each June for several years. Apologies to Joe and Mary for not being aware. Continued next page Old Business Rita Buck and Felicia Evans commented on the phone calls they made to non-renewals. The Breeze 8 September 2019 Meetings, Past and Future for 2019 by John Mather, AO

May meeting at Brandywine was a great success. We had 55 people attending with a choice of six dinners. Dick Epstien of the BBB gave a learned, educational, at times funny talk on the scams out there trying to hook us and re- lated subjects. Thank you Mary Strohmeyer as our contact person.

The only downside of the above was the slow service. Sadly some of that probably fell on me and the membership. As of one week before we had 24 people signed up. Then we had the last minute rush. Lucia helped people get signed up who attend but don't call until the end. Brandywine had three events going that evening with us plus the restaurant itself was open. That was 150-200 people. By the time I could give an accurate count they could not get anyone even if they knew an 'extra'. I had a similar discussion with a restaurant owner a few years ago and you just can't get people on short notice. They want to work so many days/nights per week or they look elsewhere. Still, chances were better if they knew a week in advance. Everyone did agree the food was excellent. Please keep them in mind for a dinner out (I don't belong and receive nothing for this promo) and check which evenings the specials run. They have similar specials at lunch. The dinner and lunch specials are Monday through Wednesday.

June we had a meeting previously scheduled at Anchor Pointe that had to be moved to Cooley Canal Y. C. Barb and I were baking in FL until shortly before and thanks goes to Lucia for tracking folks down to announce the switch. The good news is Cooley Canal is only about one mile further out Route 2 than Anchor Pointe. With a pot luck and Schaller and gang burning bologna (kidding) who could pass up the low cost. A special thanks to Joe and Mary Schaller for donating the sandwiches as well as grilling. If I missed anyone let me know.

Hopefully you are enjoying boating for July and August.

September meeting will be at TYC with Felicia Evans setting up the meeting. It will be a buffet similar to earlier in the year.

October is tentatively at MRYC (Maumee River Yacht Club) with hoped for involvement of someone from the Tole- do Zoo speaking. More details will be forthcoming.

November meeting is being planned by Barb and myself and will give more details as solidified. It probably will be catered by Michael's Cafe and Bakery as we did last year at the UT Marine Research Ctr. Great food (yes I am a convert) so come for the meal alone.

Note we have a few speakers that don't pertain directly to boating and I think that adds some variety. We are always open to ideas about speakers.

Cooperative Charting News

Hopefully the heat and rain this summer has not stopped you from being out on your boat or someone else’s gather- ing information for a Nautical Cooperative Charting Report. And don’t forget our Geodetic Mark recovery program. You still have time to participate in either program. On the water you should always wear a life jacket. When search- ing for geodetic marks you should wear a Cooperative Charting safety vest or have a magnetic automobile sign to help keep you visible on bridges and highways. If you would like either of these items, please contact either Bo Ibach III or Greg Shay, respectively. To learn about our Cooperative Charting programs, log in at usps.org and use the URL below.
