As a sailor from a young age, I was well aware of the important role that Regional Sailing Authorities play in U.S. and Canadian sailing. One of the things that make the I-LYA truly unique is the inclusion of an active Power Boat Regatta from the beginning. That blend of boating adds to the energy and vibrancy of the I-LYA and helps to make it the great organization that it is. This year we celebrate the 125th running of the I-LYA Annual Regatta! Over the years, due to the number of participants, we have split the regatta into four parts. This year will be the 125th Sail Regatta, the 63d standalone Junior Sail Regatta, the 44th standalone Power Regatta and the 33d Junior Power Regatta. We will be celebrating the 125th Regatta throughout the year in many ways, including unique 125th Regatta flags flying in DeRivera Park, a formal Opening Mike Powers Ceremony at the I-LYA Memorial for the Sail Regatta, and by “dressing ship” 2018 I-LYA Commodore and flying flags at the Sail and Power Regattas. One of the jewels of the I-LYA is the Inter-Lake Yachtsmen’s Fund. By con- tributed funds to support both the Junior Sail and the Junior Power Regattas, the Yachtsmen’s Fund helps to make these events affordable to allow greater participation. Please consider joining as a Life Member of the Yachtsmen’s Fund and urge your club to become a Dollar-Per-Member club! I-LYA The Inter-Lake Yachting Association’s ability to continue these great boat- Event Dates ing events only continues through the outstanding contributions of time and effort of our volunteers. It is truly a team effort and I thank all of you for your 2018 continued support! Apr. 6–7 Spring Meeting I would also like to thank the members of Monroe Boat Club for their sup- July 15–19 Junior Bay Week port over the past several years. Without that support, this would have been Aug 1–2 Deepwater Races much more difficult. And, of course, I want to thank my wife, Lady Kathy, for her support and Aug 2–5 Sail Regatta encouragement as we have “run the chairs” of the I-LYA. Aug. 8–12 Junior & Senior Lady Kathy and I have made many new friends on this journey and look Powerboat Regattas forward to meeting many more in the future. One Four Forevermore! 4 Inter-Lake Yachting Association 2018 Meet the Commodore Mike Powers, of Monroe, Michigan, is the Inter-Lake Yachting Association’s 125th Commodore. His homeport is Monroe Boat Club, located at Bolles Harbor, Michigan. He previously served the I-LYA as Trustee in 2015 and as Powerboat Regatta Chair in 2016. Mike was honored by being named Mid-America Boating’s Skipper of the Year in 2016. Mike started in small sailboats with his father at Kiser Lake Sailing Club, north of Dayton, Ohio. He continued sailboat racing while attending the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, sailing a variety of boats ranging from 12-foot cat rigged dinghies to a 73-foot offshore racing ketch. Mike also sailed on the USCGC Eagle, a 295-foot barque, while at the Academy. During his career with the U.S. Coast Guard, Mike served on three ice- breakers on the Great Lakes, including the USCGC Mackinaw, Cheboygan, MI; the USCGC Mobile Bay, Sturgeon Bay, WI; and as Commanding Officer of USCGC Neah Bay, Cleveland, OH. His last shipboard tour was on USCGC Polar Sea, Seattle, WA. While aboard Polar Sea in 1994, the ship became the first United States surface ship to reach the North Pole and, in company with the CCGS Louis S. St. Laurent, they were the first surface ships to cross the Arctic Ocean. Mike worked in communications, information systems, and electronics support while ashore. He retired in 1998. Following his Coast Guard career, Mike was an Electronics Engineering Technology instructor and Dean with ITT Technical Institute and an Assistant Professor and Electrical Engineering Technology Department Chair at Michigan Technological University, Houghton, MI. He retired from teaching in 2013. Mike and his wife, Kathy, arrived in the Monroe area in December of 2006 and joined the Monroe Boat Club in January of 2008. He has served MBC as Power Fleet Captain, Financial Secretary, Rear Commodore, Vice Commodore, and Commodore in 2014. Mike and Kathy can often be found either sailing aboard their J/24, Mariner, or cruising around western Lake Erie aboard their boat, Voyageur. Mike and Kathy Voyageur Mariner Inter-Lake Yachting Association 2018 5 6 Inter-Lake Yachting Association 2018 Monroe Boat Club The Monroe Boat Club (MBC) traces its roots to the formation of an inde- pendent boat club in 1868. The club brought fame to Monroe by finishing first place at the world-famous Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England in 1878. Out of this club emerged the Monroe Yacht Club in 1902. In 1905 the Club first sponsored its now-famous annual muskrat dinner. Between 1905 and 1935 the Monroe Yacht Club grew to a membership of 500, and became a popular social spot and center of yachting activities on Western Lake Erie. The years between 1936 and 1945 were difficult economic times. There was a reduced interest in yachting and club activity. The Club was revitalized by a merger of the Monroe Yacht Club and the Bolles Harbor Boat Club on Nov. 8, 1945. In 1948, club members volun- teered their labor and used donated lumber from an old barn to build the docks and the clubhouse (1949). During the ’50s and ’60s the club continued to expand. MBC Regattas were attended by 5000+ people. A grain-thrashing steam engine boiler was used to cook 600 dozen ears of corn and corn-on-the-cob was a special fea- ture for many years. Over 90 sailboats in 13 classes raced during the annual regattas.
