3 Golden Eagle Basketball CSI Women working toward third straight Region 18 Title The College of Southern Idaho Women’s Basketball team will build on the experience of four returning players from last year’s Scenic West Athletic Conference and Region 18 Championship team to get back to the NJCAA National Tournament in Salina, Kansas. The Golden Eagles will have to do it without All American Patrice Toston, who helped lead CSI the last two seasons before graduating and going on to play at Utah Valley University. But the four returning sophomores combined for 30.9 points, 14.8 rebounds, 6.42 assists and 4.69 steals per game. Leading the way will be Re- gion 18 second-team selection and guard Holly Blades (13.9 ppg, 6.9 rbg). She is joined by returning guards Rachelle Owens (Carson, Calif.) and McClain Williams (Eagle) and returning forward Elisabet Lopez Sagrera (Barcelona, Spain). “All four of our returners played significant minutes as freshmen, especially late in the season,” said CSI head coach Randy Rogers. “They understand how tough our league is and what it will take to com- pete at the national level, having made the trip back to nationals last season.” At the guard position, Blades, Owens and Wil- liams will get help from incoming frehsmen Ruby Shreeve (Kuna), Denajha Kie (Las Vegas, Nev.), Katie Hughes (Filer), Matti Ventling (Las Vegas, Nev.), Ralena Phillips (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Alexia Mefi (Seattle, Wash.) “We have an athletic group of guards that can score and defend,” Rogers said. “We will be able to apply pressure on our opponents because we can substitute deep into our bench.” Mefi can also play the forward position with Sagrera. Freshman Mariah Bankhead (Twin Falls), whose dad Shawn Bankhead played bas- ketball for CSI, will see time at forward and center for the Eagles. “I’m excited to see what Alexia, Elisabet and Mariah can do for us,” Rogers said. “They are talented and agressive players that are very ca- pable of having big games. All three could have some big games offensively and in the rebounding column.” On paper, the Golden Eagles have just two centers - Samantha Lubcke (Australia) and Tina 4 Golden Eagle Basketball

2014-15 Outlook

Vernon (Sparks, Nev.) But Mefi, Sagrera and Bankhead can all play inside. “Samantha is the type of player that can do it all for us. She will consistently be one of our top scorers and rebounders and could post a lot of double-double performances. Tina has a ton of potential and will be fun to watch as she learns our system,” Rogers said. Having, won the Region 18 Tournament the past two years, the Golden Eagles enter the season as the team to beat. CSI is the highest ranked Scenic West Athletic Conference team in the NJCAA pre-season poll at seventh. But Salt Lake is close at 10th. “You can throw the rankings out when it comes to our region. Every team in our conference is capable of beating each other on any given night,” Rogers said. “We will be very young early but I think we have a team capable of doing good things late. It’s been fun to work with this group. They work hard every day and want to improve and represent CSI well.”

President Jeff Fox

Dr. Jeff Fox was named the fourth College of Southern Idaho President in October of 2013, with an official start date of January 2014. He started at CSI as an Associate Professor of English in 1987; in 2006, he attained the rank of Professor of Merit. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in English from California State University at Sacramento and his Ph. D. in Higher Education Leadership from the University of Idaho (his 2008 dissertation was on community college presidencies.) From 1987 to 2000, he taught a variety of courses including literature, humanities, composition, and Japanese language. Fox was appointed as Director of the Academic Development Center in 2000, and in 2003 he became Chair of the English, Languages, and Philosophy Department. Fox was selected as CSI Academic Teacher of the Year in 1995, and he was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award from the J. A. & Kathryn Albertson and CSI Foundations in 2000. In 2008 after a national search, Fox was appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer. He and Evin, his wife of 31 years, raised their two sons in Twin Falls.

Athletic Director Joel Bate

Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate took over Golden Eagle Athletic Director responsibilities in January 2007. Bate, who had been teaching in the English Department since he arrived on the CSI campus in 1993, gave up teaching in the classroom to work with student-athletes and coaches on a daily basis. Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Lady Golden Eagles to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled a 144-78 record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic All-Americans. Two players went on to play professional basketball, including Jessica Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned Region 18 Coach of the Year honors. Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball, track and basketball, where he compiled a 114-32 record and four third-place state finishes. Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State University and his master’s degree in English at the University of Idaho in 1986. Bate and his wife Donna and three children live in Twin Falls.
